Modeling Data for NoSQL Document Databases

31:23
Application developers must support unprecedented rates of change – functionality must rapidly evolve to meet customer needs and respond to competitive pressures. To address these realities, developers are increasingly selecting NoSQL document-oriented databases (e.g. Azure DocumentDB, MongoDB, CouchDB) for schema-free, scalable and high performance data storage. One of the oft-cited benefits of NoSQL solutions are that they allow for the storage of schema less data. In reality, however, NoSQL solutions provide for schema flexibility, allowing the system to store data as it comes in, permitting dissimilar structures and encouraging seamless data model iteration. While schema flexibility makes it easy to embrace changes to your data model, data modeling is still important in NoSQL systems. In this session, we’ll discuss not only modeling data in Azure DocumentDB, but also migrating and transforming data from traditional, structured data environments.

PLOTCON 2016: David Crawford, Amazon for information: Building a modern data catalog

28:46
A data catalog provides context to help data scientists and other data consumers find a relevant dataset, determine if it can be trusted, understand what it means, and utilize it to make better products and better decisions. David Crawford explores how enterprises build interfaces that make sourcing data as easy as shopping on Amazon. David gives an overview of data catalogs and explains how they relate to concepts like data dictionaries or data inventories. He also covers some of the fastest and most effective ways to build a data catalog, discussing the roles crowds, experts, and machines play. David Crawford has long had a passion for helping people use data to uncover insights in fields ranging from retail to medical informatics. Prior to joining Alation, David was CEO of Metrica, where he built tools to help companies create data-driven cultures, and a product manager at AppNexus in New York.

Describing the World: Data Model Patterns

01:42:05
When an organization is planning to develop or revise the automation of information processing, a typical first step is to analyze the underlying structure of its business. The 'entity/relationship' (or simply 'data') model is a good vehicle for doing this. What has been discovered over the years is that there are a number of structures that are universal and applicable to all kinds of organizations, both private and public. There are four fundamental categories: People and Organizations, Geography, Physical Resources and Activities and Events. Overlaying all of these are the topics of Accounting and Information Resources. This webcast will also relate this model to the Library of Congress Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR). Speaker Biography: David Hay is manager of data strategy and architecture with Capgemini Financial Services USA. In the information industry for longer than he would care to admit, for the last 20 years he has produced data models for companies in various industries, such as clinical pharmaceutical research, oil production and processing, and banking, as well as for various government agencies. He is the author of several books, including his most recent, Data Model Patterns: A Metadata Map. For more information, visit https://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=4580

Data Governance and ERwin Active Model Templates

01:02:57
Part of ERworld 2015 Original Air Date: March 19, 2015 Presenter: Vani Mishra In today’s complex data world, a data model can not only reconcile the differences in how data is described and presented, but it can also pave the way for a robust data governance program. Developing such a model is the first step towards building a good data governance program and can provide the business with a detailed yet holistic view of its most valuable asset. ERwin® Data Modeler has evolved to keep pace by adding Active Model Templates. These templates enable users to collect a Master set of model objects, such as tables, columns, domains, entities, naming standards, and UDPs, in order to support a MDM standard from multiple sources and reuse it to maintain Data Governance policies across the enterprise. Disclaimer: ERwin Data Modeler and its related products were formerly owned by CA Technologies, until the product was divested in March, 2016.

Attribute Extraction from Product Titles in eCommerce

05:22
Author: Ajinkya More, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Abstract: This paper presents a named entity extraction system for detecting attributes in product titles of eCommerce retailers like Walmart. The absence of syntactic structure in such short pieces of text makes extracting attribute values a challenging problem. We find that combining sequence labeling algorithms such as Conditional Random Fields and Structured Perceptron with a curated normalization scheme produces an effective system for the task of extracting product attribute values from titles. To keep the discussion concrete, we will illustrate the mechanics of the system from the point of view of a particular attribute - brand. We also discuss the importance of an attribute extraction system in the context of retail websites with large product catalogs, compare our approach to other potential approaches to this problem and end the paper with a discussion of the performance of our system for extracting attributes. More on http://www.kdd.org/kdd2016/ KDD2016 Conference is published on http://videolectures.net/

Tandy (1889-1966). During their visit, these ambitious young fellows decided to pool their resources and go into business together. Two years later (1921) and half a continent away, two London-born Bostonian brothers, Theodore and Milton Deutschmann, opened a one-store retail and mail-order operation in the heart of downtown Boston. These young immigrant brothers wanted to provide amateur and ham radio equipment to the public; much of it was leftover Army gear. To pursue their interests, the brothers opened a retail store (a block from the site of the Boston Massacre). William Halligan, one of Deutschmann's first employees and later the founder of Hallicrafters, suggested the name, “Radio Shack”. They chose the name, "Radio Shack," which was a term for the room that housed a ship's radio equipment. Beginning in 1921, Radio Shack would grow to a handful of stores clustered in the Northeast, and become a leading electronics mail-order distributor to hobbyists. This is how it would remain until the company and a young Texan named Charles Tandy crossed paths four decades later. Meanwhile, the Hinckley-Tandy Leather Company grew modestly through the years. Although the company survived the Great Depression, it was nearly crippled when World War II began in 1941. Mr. Tandy's oldest son, Charles D. Tandy (1918-1978), while serving in the Navy during the war, observed how leathercraft was used as a therapeutic tool for patients in military hospitals and by servicemen in recreation and rehabilitation centers. He told his father that leathercraft was the way to steer the company during the war years – and to prepare for what he believed would be a healthy, new, post-war hobby market. In 1938, Radio Shack issued its first catalog when it entered the high-fidelity music equipment market. In 1947, it opened the nation's first audio showroom; providing amplifiers, speakers, turntables, phonograph cartridges, and the like. In 1954, Radio Shack began to sell their private-label products under the brand name Realistic®. By the 1960s, Radio Shack had expanded to become a leading distributor of electronic parts and products around the world. In 1963, Charles Tandy, bought the company for the equivalent of $300,000 cash. The '70s proved to be a decade of incredible growth for Radio Shack. The incredibly popular citizen-band (CB) radios, were one of its top selling items. Following the highly successful citizen-band (CB) radios in 1977, Radio Shack introduced the first mass-produced personal computer: the TRS-80® microcomputer - Only $599.95. This computer was the creation of a 24-year-old engineer named Steve Leininger. In contrast to build-it-yourself units available at the time, the TRS-80 was fully wired and tested. Although a primitive machine by today's standards, it was a technological and price breakthrough, and overwhelming customer demand caused a production backlog that lasted for months. Over 200,000 TRS-80 Model I computers were sold from 1977 to 1981. The '80s continued to make Radio Shack the "biggest name in little computers". Radio Shack offered the first affordably priced stereo receiver with digital technology, the first mobile/portable cellular telephone and the first high-performance satellite TV system that could be installed by the do-it-yourselfer. The '90s brought an explosion in personal communications. The company invented the Family Radio Service (FRS), which uses license-free 2-way personal radios. RadioShack sold more wireless phones than any other retailer. ...to read more about the history of RadioShack Corporation, visit www.RadioShackCatalogs.com

AWS re:Invent 2016: Enabling DevOps for an Enterprise with AWS Service Catalog (DEV321)

49:50
As incumbent enterprises move to the cloud, questions arise how transform the legacy IT culture to maximize the agility and flexibility AWS provides. Speed and dexterity must be implemented in a consistent manner, minimizing the impact to the organizational structure, but taking into account the existing skill sets and knowledge base. With AWS Service Catalog, you can manage commonly deployed AWS CloudFormation template versions, enable controlled self-provisioning, and leverage those same products in your automated deployment pipelines to AWS. In this session, developers, operations leads, architects, and IT managers learn how to leverage AWS Service Catalog and AWS CloudFormation to transform IT culture to maximize the agility, flexibility, and value that the AWS platform provides. Additionally, John Wiley & Sons, a 200-year-old enterprise, demonstrates how AWS Professional Services helped them balance the velocity achieved by moving to AWS with a structured governance model to deploy their cloud infrastructure and application code.

Opening Data in Global Mapper

01:12:33
Most Global Mapper workflows are initiated using some sort of data access process. This might involve simply opening the required files, streaming the relevant online data, or connecting to an existing spatial database. While accessing data in Global Mapper is a remarkably straightforward process, there are a number of variations on the theme of opening spatial data that may not be as obvious. In the latest Global Mapper webcast we will introduce the many different data access mechanisms within the software and we will explore the extensive variety of data sources that are available to Global Mapper users. Specific topics will include: - “Importing” versus “Opening” files - Opening common spatial file formats - Accessing online data - Connecting to a Spatial Database - Creating spatial data from an ASCII text file - Geocoding a list of addresses - Rectifying imagery - Importing data using a Map Catalog - Using a script to open data files - Customizing the Sample Data If you have questions about any of the workflows or topics covered in this presentation, email [email protected] If you would like to download an evaluation copy of Global Mapper, visit: www.bluemarblegeo.com/products/global-mapper-download.php
Spec. catalog data generator for plant 3D design (version 1)

01:01
In process plant projects, plant 3D CAD systems are used for basic and detail designs. In order to support plant design using a plant 3D CAD system, equipment and materials catalog library should be constructed. The catalog typically consists of 3D shape, specifications, and ports. Therefore, a system that integrates 3D shape, specifications, and ports to create input data for the catalog library is necessary. For this, we analyzed use cases regarding the integration of 3D shape, specifications, and ports and designed the system. According to the design, we implemented a prototype system and performed experiments to verify the system This research was supported by the Plant Research Program (Project ID: 14IFIP-B091004-01) funded by the Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Korean government. The authors gratefully acknowledge their support. Developers: Jaesun Lee(이재선), Yoenju Bae(배연주), and Duhwan Mun(문두환) For more information, visit our lab. Web page http://www.dhmun.net
