Hollywood is Letting Black Directors Shine.. What's the Catch?

02:36
See it first on my website ! : http://thealmontefilms.com/jordan-peele-first/ Jordan Peele first Black screenwriter to win Best Original Screenplay oscar– nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. An oscar on your first feature film is a big deal. A huge deal for an experimental film coined as the first of it’s genre. “Social horror.” Coming from a comedy background with his “Key and Peele” series, it’s important to note his decision to roam away from what he knew was already working for most Black comedians. Black comedy movies. Parody movies. Movies we have plenty of. Some of the most classic and beloved episodes of the Key and Peele series were ones that felt more like political satire. But he chose to create something that he could call his. While Get Out had many comedic undertones, its socio-political theme was what made it a classic to many Americans that could connect to this. And right on time with Black Panther just hitting $1 Billion at the Box office after just four weeks of its release. Black people really meant business when #OscarsSoWhite was trending on Twitter two years ago. Suddenly movies like Hidden Colors, Birth of a Nation, Get Out, and Black Panther started gaining steam all over social media amongst millenials. Were doors opening once Hollywood realized they could capitalize on this political interest? Support free content here: https://www.patreon.com/TheAlmonteFilms

Steve McQueen calling out Hollywood directors who don't cast black and latino actors

02:37
Steve McQueen calling out Hollywood directors who don't cast black and latino actors: "It's SHAMEFUL". In this video: directors Steve McQueen, Michel Hazanavicius, Bennett Miller, Mike Mills, Alexander Payne and Jason Reitman. THR: You’re all men, and only one of you, Steve, is a minority — why is that? McQUEEN: I must be in America. MILLS: Yeah, why isn’t there a woman here? My wife could be sitting here. THR: Name a female director who made a major film this year. MILLS: Miranda July [“The Future”]. PAYNE: Lynne Ramsay [“We Need to Talk About Kevin”], Andrea Arnold [“Wuthering Heights”]. THR: OK, but you’re talking about small films that have been little seen in America. McQUEEN: I mean, the question could be different. The question could be, “Why aren’t there more black directors?” because there are obviously more women directors than black directors. THR: So what’s the answer? McQUEEN: I have no idea. I mean, it’s opportunity, isn’t it? That’s what it’s about — opportunity. And access, because some people just give up. I’m always astonished by American filmmakers, particularly living in certain areas, when they never cast one black person, or have never put them in a lead in the movie. I’m astonished. It’s shameful. How do you live in New York and not cast a black actor or a Latino actor? It’s shameful. It’s unbelievable. REITMAN: Not stepping into that. MILLER: I don’t know.

Black Female Directors Earning Incredible Hollywood Reviews

01:21
Though she didn't take home the prize, this year Ava DuVernay became the first black woman in history to be nominated for a Golden Globe for best director. The indie director took a leap into the mainstream after helming Selma , the biopic about Martin Luther King, Jr. If she's up for an Academy Award, she'll once again be the first black woman nominated in a best director category. However, as DuVernay has often said herself , she's not the first black woman to be deserving of major award nominations. Writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood broke into the mainstream after directing the 2000 romantic drama Love and Basketball. She's directed two more features since then (both of which she wrote herself). British director Amma Asante achieved critical success after writing and directing her debut film, A Way of Life, in 2004. Before 1991, no black female director had ever had a film receive a general theatrical release. Julie Dash changed that. Her debut feature film Daughters of the Dust broke down that barrier in a dramatic fashion, a look at Gullah culture off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. Since then, she's directed numerous TV movies, most noticeably the Emmy-nominated 2002 film The Rosa Parks Story. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/Y4kbfWY7zZk/ http://www.wochit.com

Black Panther on BlackTree: Director Ryan Coogler—Exclusive Interview

05:30
Marvel Studios presents “Black Panther,” the story of T’Challa, a young African prince who takes on the mantle of King and Super Hero, and the centuries’ old legacy that comes with it. Long known for its revolutionary creative vision, Marvel Comics has introduced its audiences to a diverse roster of Super Heroes since 1939, most notably with the groundbreaking Black Panther character that made its first appearance in “Fantastic Four Vol. 1” Issue 52, published in 1966. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s Black Panther was soon firmly established as a fan favorite, crossing racial and cultural lines. The imagery of a regal African King and his Super Hero alter ego continued to resonate with fans over the years, resulting in multiple new “Black Panther” publications most recently from the likes of filmmaker Reginald Hudlin and author/journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates. In 2016, the Marvel Cinematic Universe welcomed T’Challa/Black Panther and introduced him to its massive fan base in “Captain America: Civil War,” the record-breaking hit film that pitted the Avengers against one another. Marvel Studios president and “Black Panther” producer Kevin Feige says, “The diversity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes back to the Marvel comics. I’ve always said we’re just trying to emulate what the comics have been doing so well for so many decades and one of those things is representing society as it exists. When the Black Panther character debuted in the ‘60s it was a daring move for the Marvel bullpen of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to introduce this new character, an African character who is smarter than many of our other heroes and is stronger than most of our other heroes. To be able to put that on the big screen fifty years later is incredibly exciting for us.” BlackTree TV is the Premier place for best in Hollywood, Music and Lifestyle. Get Out director Jordan Peele becomes 10th black director to cross 100 Million Dollar Box Office

05:54
Jalen Coleman sits down with Jordan Peele to discuss his film Get Out. Get Out Crosses $100M, Making Jordan Peele 1st Black Writer-Director To Do So With Feature Debut Posted by Wilson Morales March 12, 2017 With a production cost of $4.5M and a gross of $21.07M at the box office this weekend, Universal’s horror thriller “Get Out” has the crossed the $100M mark, which makes Jordan Peele the first Black writer-director to do so with his feature debut. While there has been countless directors who have had their feature debut gross over the century mark, no Black director had done it with their own screenplay. Director Clark Johnson‘s 2003 feature debut S.W.A.T also grossed $100M but the screenplay was adapted by David Ayer and David McKenna off the TV series. According to Deadline, “Get Out” also became the fastest Blumhouse title to hit that mark in 16 days, beating Split‘s 19 days to the mark. Dropping 25% from last week’s take, Universal is reporting a $8.76M Saturday for a third weekend of $21.07M and running cume of $111.05M.” The $100M plateau also makes it the 4th fastest for a Black director, followed by John Singleton’s 2003 2 Fast 2 Furious, which cross the plateau in 17 days and ended with a a total gross of $127M. Here are the other African Americans who have it $100M domestically with their films and the amount of days it took. F. Gary Gray’s 2015 Straight Outta Compton (9 Days, $161M total domestic cume) Tim Story’s 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (12 days, $131M) Keenan Ivory Wayans’s 2000 Scary Movie (14 days, $157M ), John Singleton’s 2003 2 Fast 2 Furious (17 days, $127M) Tim Story’s 2014 Ride Along (23 days, $134M) Clark Johnson’s 2003 S.W.A.T (24 days, ($116M) Ryan Coogler’s 2015 Creed (38 Days, $109M) Lee Daniels with 2013 Lee Daniels’ The Butler (46 days, $116M) Antoine Fuqua’s 2014 The Equalizer (66 days, $101M) F. Gary Gray’s 2003 The Italian Job (95 days, $106.1M) Sidney Poitier’s 1980 Stir Crazy took in a domestic total $101.3M but there are no records that show how many days it took to reach that mark. It’s worth noting “Crazy” was the first time a film directed by an African-American earned more than $100 million.

'Girls Trip' Director on Black Girl Magic in new film

00:35
"Girls Trip," a Universal film starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish, will be released on Friday. Director Malcolm D. Lee told The Hollywood Reporter that his hope for the film is that people recognize that quote "Black Girl Magic is real" and feel empowered by it. The comedy documents the adventures of four lifelong friends during a New Orleans vacation, behaving badly and getting away with it. He adds, "Black women can open a movie and it does not have to be about the space program, okay?" http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thr/film/~3/wNqzSUdQ7d0/girls-trip-director-black-girl-magic-tiffany-haddish-future-best-man-movies-1021898 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

#BlackHollywood #SpikeLee #Denzel Top5 Black Movie Directors

02:52
Top 5 black Hollywood movie directors. Top five black presidents top Hollywood movie directors such as Spike Lee, John Singleton, Denzel Washington, and others. John F Kennedy once said in a speech, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the very word secrecy is repugnant in a free and open society, and We are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweigh the dangers with your cited to justify it. Even today serious little value in opposing the threat of it closed Society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today there is little value in ensuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave Danger that in an ounce need for increased security. Used to Pain by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. " John F. Kennedy was a Tru hero. Staring in the face of corruption and Evil. He was a true gentleman to the people that he had no reason to be loyal to. He was a privilege child and wasn't very intelligent and intellectual man. Maybe this is the reason why he was the number one conspiracy theorist of presidential assassinations that we have seen in history in this country. But he brings a great point to the subject of Social injustice as far as the war on drugs and police brutality within this country. Freedom of speech is one of the most important amendments that is given to every citizen of this country. We must respect our rights as a people and Never Surrender them when encountered by law enforcement. You must not be afraid to speak your mind and stand up for what is right. If you do not stand for something you will die for nothing. Many believe this and it is a struggle within the mentality of basic people that have been molded into being somewhat of a robot by the media. Stay woke. Why Do Female Directors Make Less Movies?

01:04
Adding age to its latest study on Hollywood representation, USC Annenberg's Media, Diversity & Social Change Initiative has uncovered sobering evidence that the lifespan of a female director's career is a lot shorter than that of her male counterpart's. Analyzing the gender, race and age of the directors of the 1,000 top-grossing films from the past 10 years, the researchers found that 80 percent of the female helmers were "one and done" -- that is, they made just one movie from 2007 to 2016. This percentage rose to 83.3 percent for women of color. By contrast, 54.8 percent of the men directed just one film during that span (with Asian and black male directors faring slightly worse, at 60 and 62.5 percent, respectively). "If you're trying to feed a family or make your way in Hollywood, having one opportunity a decade is simply not going to get the job done," Dr. Katherine Pieper, who co-authored the study with Dr. Stacy L. Smith and Marc Choueiti, tells The Hollywood Reporter. Although the average age of male and female directors was similar (46.2 and 47.4 years, respectively), the age range for each gender differed. All of the women who worked in the past 10 years were in their 30s to 60s, while eight 20-something men and six octogenarians released at least one movie during that span, including Clint Eastwood, whose eight titles make him the second most prolific director of the past decade. Tyler Perry is first, with 14, while the highest-ranking woman, The Proposal's Anne Fletcher, shares 24th place with 31 male directors, with four films each. In assessing the race and gender of directors of the annual 100 highest-grossing movies, the researchers found that over the past 10 years the share of films directed by women, black or Asian filmmakers (4, 5.1 and 3 percent, respectively) has experienced no significant statistical shift. These proportions represent movies, not individuals; Perry, for example, is singlehandedly responsible for nearly a quarter of the movies helmed by black directors over the past decade, while James Wan, Justin Lin and Jon M. Chu held more than 40 percent of Asian directors' credits, thanks to their franchise work. In terms of unique individuals, 27 black and 17 Asian directors sat in the director's chair. Five were women: Ava DuVernay, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Sanaa Hamri, Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Loveleen Tandan, who was credited as "Co-director (India)" on Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire. Although the study did not evaluate ethnicity, its authors noted that Miracles from Heaven's Patricia Riggen was the only Latina director among the 1,000-film sample of the last decade. Going forward, the USC researchers intend to continue their qualitative and quantitative examination of the entire pipeline to further pinpoint where and why women and people of color are losing opportunities to work. Although the majority of those included in this study had agency representation, "there's a breakdown in the process of getting women and people of color these top jobs," Smith says. "More inquiry needs to be conducted to find out where are they falling out, and what can be done to shore up those leaks or cracks in the consideration process." To that end, the authors have included a number of proposed solutions tailored for various sectors of the industry, from buyers and sellers, who can set specific proportions (i.e. 30 percent female/underrepresented race) for people they consider for a job, to A-list talent, who can add "equity riders" to their contracts. Says Smith: "It's about asking what are all the levers that need to be pushed to open up the gates for more storytellers interested in developing their talent so that they can have opportunities over time?" http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thr/film/~3/H7Zc1a7x4oA/study-finds-80-percent-female-directors-made-one-movie-10-years-970896 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Entertainment using http://wochit.com
