Books for Learning About Vintage Style & Clothing
There are a lot of amazing books out in the world, from actual historic costume textbooks to big coffee table photo books on old Hollywood costuming. I'd love to have an even larger library of them all someday, but for now here are some of my favorite books for learning about vintage style and clothing. Books Mentioned: 1- The collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute : Fashion - a history from the 18th to the 20th Century (French) by Akiko (Chief Editor) Fukai (Author) (This huge book includes both historic and vintage fashion, perfect for anyone interested in both. This is the edition I have but there are several others I assume are just as great. Mostly full of just gorgeous photos, this book gives a great visual overview of fashion through the ages and I have always found it endlessly inspiring) 2- Twentieth Century Fashion in Detail (V & A Fashion in Details) by Valerie Mendes (Author), Claire Wilcox (Fashion in Detail are a series of books by the V&A Museum and are great for historic costumers as well as vintage fashion devotes. This book covers some of the great details and couture finishes common in clothing before the fast fashion craziness we live amongst now) 3- Vintage Fashion Complete Hardcover by Nicky Albrechtsen (Another huge book that would be a great first resource for anyone just getting into vintage style or buying and selling vintage. Has overviews of each decade, each kind of accessory, and important style movements or influences. I just bought this book a few months ago and I really enjoyed it!) 4 & 5- 1930s Fashion: The Definitive Sourcebook & 1940's Fashion: The Definitive Sourcebook by Emmanuelle Dirix (Author), Charlotte Fiell (Author) (These are great books full of photographs and fashion plates for each era. Really good for when you narrow down your interest to a specific era, or if you want to absorb the visuals and styles of each decade in a very thorough way.) 6- The Way We Wore: Styles of the 1930s and '40s and Our World Since Then by Marsha Hunt (I loooove this book. A Hollywood actress in the 1930's and 40's, Marsha Hunt really wore the clothes we still so admire today. In this book she includes hundreds of photos, film stills, and anecdotes about 30s and 40s fashions. She seems like such an inspiring lady too! This book can be harder to find, I got my copy used on Amazon and it seems to be a de-accessioned library book. Try and snap this one up if you see it, it's a true treasure!) Thanks for watching! Books for Learning About Historic Costume
Back in the library today for a look at some resources to assist in your study of historic costume! There are a few textbooks I left off this list, but these are the books that have inspired me when designing and making historic costumes in the past. Back in the days before Pinterest, these were all I had to delve into admiring historic dress... Books Mentioned: 1- The collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute : Fashion - a history from the 18th to the 20th Century (French) by Akiko (Chief Editor) Fukai (Author) (Once again this book makes my list of must haves. This huge book includes both historic and vintage fashion, perfect for anyone interested in both. The video shows the edition I have, but there are several others I assume are just as great. Mostly full of just gorgeous photos, this book gives a great visual overview of fashion through the ages and I have always found it endlessly inspiring) 2- Fashioning Fashion:European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915 by Sharon Sadako Takeda (This book highlights some wonderful pieces from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's costume collection. The excellent photographs allow you to absorb every detail) 3- Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the Eighteenth Century (Metropolitan Museum of Art) by Harold Koda (Author), Andrew Bolton (Author), Mimi Hellman (Author) (A little bit different, with a lot more text than the other books I've mentioned. great for learning about 18th century dress for both men and women, and seeing the furnishings that would have surrounded such elegantly dresses aristocrats as well.) 4- 5,000 Years of Textiles by Jennifer Harris (This was a textbook I ended up buying for my history of textiles class in university, and remains a useful resource when studying textiles and their development through time and by region or class.) 5&6- Fashion in Detail Series (V & A Fashion in Details) by Valerie Mendes (Author), Claire Wilcox (Fashion in Detail are a series of books by the V&A Museum and are great for historic costumers as well as vintage fashion devotes. This book covers some of the great details, finishes, styles, and textiles of clothing from the Victoria & Albert Museum's wonderful historic costume collection) 7&8- Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from "La Mode Illustrée" (Dover Fashion and Costumes) by JoAnne Olian (Editor) & Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898 (Dover Fashion and Costumes) by Stella Blum (Editor) (For those more Victorian or Edwardian inclined, (or perhaps Steampunk as well!), these collected reproductions of real antique fashion plates give endless examples of designs and ensembled from these eras.) 9&10- Patterns of Fashion Series vol. 1 & 2 by Janet Arnold (Janet Arnold is considered one of the fairy godmothers of historic costume research and documentation. For those wondering what all of these gorgeous historic gowns look like before they were sewn together, these Patterns of Fashion books have everything laid out for you. Just scale up the patterns and adjust them to fit (okay, no mean feat) and you will be swanning about in yards of taffeta in no time!) What are your favorite reference books for historic costume? Top 10 Men's Style Books
Get links to the books and more details about them here: https://gentl.mn/SRS-top-style-books SHOP THE VIDEO: 1. Ascot in Brown, Bottle Green, Orange and Madder Blue Silk Large Paisley - https://gentl.mn/2NJdmxi 2. Teal and Purple Shadow Stripe Ribbed Socks - https://gentl.mn/2CM3RMR 1. Dressing The Man It was written in 2002 and contains everything you want to know about classic men's style. It has beautiful photographs, illustration, very good text, it has hands-on graphics that allow you to pick the right patterns, it explains what to do and what not to do and overall, Alan Flusser probably sold more books on classic men's style than any other author in the world. 2. Gentleman My number two pick is Gentleman from Bernhard Roetzel. It is a German book and it was the first book I ever had that started it all for me. At the time it was written, it was the first and only book of its kind and probably because of that, it was really popular. 3. Bespoke Menswear Tailoring For Gentlemen t's likewise written by Bernhard Roetzel and it walks you through the entire process of choosing a fabric, cutting the pattern, having your fitting and getting your final garment. It also highlights a bunch of different tailors from across Europe so you get a better understanding of the different styles and what works for you. 4. Esquire Encyclopedia of 20th Century Men's Fashion That's quite a mouthful and even though it's so old, it's such a good book because it's very comprehensive and it's over 600 pages. Just look at the table of contents, it doesn't just talk about formal eveningwear but also formal day wear and there is a chapter on waistcoats, cummerbunds, and other clothing. It's a fantastic book that has lots of illustrations as well as a glossary and part of a dictionary that really help you to find things quickly if you don't know what certain terminology means. 5. Reclams Mode- und Kostümlexikon The focus of this encyclopedia is not just men but also women and fashion and fashion history, in general. I found it extremely valuable and if you speak German, it's a no-brainer, get this book! 6. The Elegant Man I put it on the list because it has a really comprehensive section about fabrics. You don't just learn about worsteds and flannels but also about things like the weaves and everything you need to know as a style enthusiast. 7. Alles Uber Herrenschuhe This monumental book title has everything about men's shoes, isn't perfect but it's definitely the most comprehensive attempt about anything there is to men's shoes. 8. History Of Men's Fashion Even though the author's French and he wrote it in French, there's also an English version of it. It has about 300 pages and talks about men's fashion history which is very interesting for someone like me. 9. Sharp Suits I met Eric once at his club in London and he has been into men's clothing for the most part of his life. He is very knowledgeable and he put together a book just about the suit, its history, the different silhouettes, the patterns, and since the suit is so central to classic elegance and style, I put it on my list. 10. Mercury Dictionary of Textile Terms It was published in the 1950s. So it's quite old but I love it because it's more than 500 pages of detailed information about anything related to cloth, fabric, textiles, yarns, they talk about the weaving patterns, the history, and anything else you wanted to know. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to stay updated? Designer plunders history books for autumn-winter fashion
SHOTLIST APTN Paris, 29 January 2005 1. Various backstage 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierre-Henri Mattout: "The whole theme is about workwear and the way, how to wear workwear. So it's a nice combination between city wear and casual wear." 3. Various backstage 4. Various catwalk 5. Pierre-Henri Mattout accepts applause MATTOUT GETS A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Pierre-Henri Mattout drew from the golden age of menswear to produce three themes: the Scottish Highlands, military dress and equestrian elegance. Lots of tartan plaids and checks spruced up lambswool, and cashmere cut into double-breasted duffle coats, blazers and a belted Norfolk jacket straight out of Dr. Watson's closet. For his eponymous collection, Pierre Henri Mattout sent out a younger, sleeker look based on a theme of Soviet constructivism and work clothes. Straight narrow pants zip down the centre of each leg or down and around the centre front and back seam. Small plaid shirts have buckles on the pockets, or feature leather collars, cuffs and pocket flaps. Innovative textures transformed conventional silhouettes into exciting 21st century streetwear. The Renaissance: Was it a Thing? - Crash Course World History #22
In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th century, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this. (April 29, 2015) https://books.google.com/books?id=jYL9cPE_M5EC Pool, Daniel. "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew." Simon & Schuster. 1993. Transcript: * OK, imagine you’re an unmarried lady out for a stroll in 19th-century London. First of all, you better not be alone. That’s right: You need an escort. But what happens if you see a man you recognize? Well, first of all, he’s not allowed to talk to you unless you make a gesture of recognition first. Which, OK, I can kind of see the appeal of that one – you don’t have to pretend to be doing something on your phone to avoid making eye contact, etc. But let’s say you really want to stop and talk to this guy: Well... you can’t. Or at least you shouldn’t. If you want to talk to him, instead of stopping, you can offer him your hand, which he can take, but only _after_ lifting his hat, using the hand farthest away from you. Once he takes your hand, he has to walk along with you, but even then you can’t just gab away. According to _Cassell’s Household Guide_, "Strict reticence of speech and conduct should be observed in public." That means no "loud talking" or "animated discussions." And if you see a gentleman you’d like to speak to, but he’s smoking a cigar, tough luck. It is amazingly rude for a man to smoke in the presence of a woman, so if you acknowledge him, he’ll have to put out his cigar, and for all you know it might have been a really expensive cigar, and now you’ve just ruined his morning. Nice work, Myrtle. * Do you ever have that problem where you want to date the neighbor’s daughter but you don’t know if she’s technically “on the market” yet, or if her parents still consider her a child? No? Good! Because that’s amazingly creepy! Fortunately, the Victorians had a formalized system for avoiding this problem: Presentation at court. If you were a respectable family who wanted to announce that your son or daughter was ready for courtship -- which is basically dating, minus all the fun, plus a lot of conversations with chaperones to determine if young men were predisposed to “base amusements” -- you could do this at a specialized event. Young men could be introduced at events called “levees,” which were held several times a year. Young ladies could be introduced at presentation events held at St. James Palace – and these events didn’t skimp on the pomp and protocol either. Men had to wear buckled shoes and swords. Ladies had to stick tall feathers in their hair and drag 3-yard trains behind their dresses. But once the kids are ready to start dating, that’s when the etiquette fangs really sink in: * Lots of parents get weirdly strict and judgmental when their kids start dating, but Victorian England really took it to another level. First of all, etiquette manuals of the time advised young lovers that, technically, you’re _supposed_ to look for partners only within your own social class, because we all know how awkward it is when you’re a Baroness and you’re trying to chat up a nice Viscount, and his mother is just right over there on the fainting couch looking at you with eyes that say, “Trash.”

Sewing Books for Beginners - Tim Gunn's Fashion Bible - Review
A necessary sewing book for beginners - before sewing any clothes for themselves! Great sewing books aren't just found in the sewing section. Any beginners at sewing should have a style guide - it is of great help when you're buying sewing patterns. Why waste valuable time and energy making something that is not flattering? Strengths: All that you ever wanted to know about each piece of clothing you’ve ever worn, seen, or yearned for is covered in this book. Tim is on top of his game as he opines with wittiness about every wearable fashion item, head to toe. You might change your mind about throwing on a white t-shirt after his summation of them! In understanding the history behind the clothing we all know and couldn’t live without, you’ll be glad you live in the current era of fashion - free to breathe in less restrictive clothing. However, you might be stumped when you find yourself agreeing with Tim’s view that we should be using more restrictive clothing on a more regular basis. Why? To look fabulous, of course! Highlights: Diagrams and tips of some designations of styles and lengths. Helpful hints on the correct fit for specific pieces and a good bit about understanding your style preferences - those things you lean toward. This is critical to those beginners. Sewing with this preplanning will make your clothes into what you really desire! Authors of this book which I recommend for beginners at sewing are Tim Gunn and Ada Calhoun. Historical monuments in Delhi | vlog Part-3 |Like in history books
I planned to travel by Ho Ho bus which was quite interesting and little annoying too but overall it was an experience. Couldn’t make to the Humayun’s tomb that day due to traffic but I did go the other day and it was splendid 😍 #delhi #placestovisitindelhi

Theater Wardrobe and Props books I love
These are some terrific reference books for anyone working in Wardrobe or Props to have in their library. You will find info about wardrobe and props jobs in the theater in my blog post: http://workinproduction.com/2018/09/04/theater-jobs-wardrobe-and-prop-departments/ Links to the books - I am NOT an affiliate. I just like these books. Thurston James on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Thurston-James/e/B001K8QJ3S for even more of his wonderful books. Julia Tomkins, "Stage Costumes" - https://www.amazon.com/Stage-Costumes-Make-Them-Theatre/dp/027341156X/ I didn't realize just how old this book is - but it is a good one! I realized that my copy was my mother's - who worked in the wardrobe of a community theater for the last 20 years of her working life. Alison Lurie, "The Language of Clothes" - https://www.amazon.com/Language-Clothes-Alison-Lurie/dp/0805062440/ Kaori O'Connor, "The Way we Wear" - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/009160141X/ Georgia O'Daniel-Baker & Helen Pullen, "A Handbook of Costume Drawing" https://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Costume-Drawing-Georgia-ODaniel-Baker/dp/0240801121/ Francois Boucher, "20,000 Years of Fashion: The History of Costume and Personal Adornment" https://www.amazon.com/Fashion-History-Costume-Personal-Adornment/dp/0810916932/ Let me know in the comments - What are your favorite theater crafts books?
