Learn how to market your photography and boost your photography brand with practical photography marketing tips and advertising advice. Marketing For Photographers is my new series of videos designed to help you navigate social media, build a great photography website, establish a solid pricing structure and increase your photography business. This video is about the social part of social media for photographers. By being social and participating in conversations and sharing knowledge I am able to increase my social currency. Social Currency is important because without it - you are just shouting and nobody is listening. How do you build social currency for your photography business? Start with GREAT Photographs. That doesn't mean that if you're a beginner you can't post… it simply means only post your best. There is nothing worse than the photographer that posts 20 images of the same shot. Only one of them is the best which means all of the others aren't! So don't post them. Provide CONTENT and CONTEXT. It is not enough to just post an image. Tell a story. Give some background. Sell it! Don't kid yourself into thinking that people actually care about your photography. If they aren't the person in the photo - they don't care about your photography unless you give them a reason to. If you are a portrait or wedding photographer, when you post the image, talk about how much fun you had with the subject, how wonderful the wedding was, or how thrilled you are that you had a chance to spend time with this wonderful person…. Comments like this make prospective customers think you are actually a nice person and would be fun to work with. Be consistent. Post on a regular basis. I would encourage you to post a minimum of twice a week on every social media platform that you are involved with. It doesn't always have to be pictures. It could be a cool quote, a link to an interesting article, it could be a short story about an experience or a thought that you had. If you are using social media to build your business this is extremely important and in the next video, I will give you some info on tools that will help you automatically generate content for your posts. Social Engagement. Make sure you reply to all comments and messages. Start conversations. Ask for opinions and feedback. I try to respond to every single comment someone leaves me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. At a minimum, I am sure to like the comment. If you can plug in links that a relevant to the answer (such as ones from your website), you'll notice that it's a quick way to get a few thousand visitors per month. Opportunity #2: Subreddits - Participate on Reddit. The more you get involved the more clout you will have on Reddit. There is a section on Reddit for your industry. Submit content from your site as well as other sites on Reddit. This can drive tens and thousands of visitors assuming Reddit likes the content you are submitting. Opportunity #3: Forums - A lot of popular forums exist on the web. Find forums within your industry and participate. Respond to questions people are asking. Every time you answer a forum thread make sure you have a signature. Within the signature should be a link back to your website. Opportunity #4: LinkedIn - You can publish your content on LinkedIn. Take your blog content, publish the first few paragraphs and add a "click to continue reading" link at the end. If people want to read the rest they can click through over to your blog. This has helped me generate over 30,000 visitors a month from LinkedIn. Opportunity #5: Niche blogs - Every industry has niche blogs. Not the TechCrunch's of the world, but the small ones. Participate on these blogs and leave comments. When leaving a comment you can add your URL and it will drive traffic back to your site. Make sure the comments you are leaving are thoughtful. Opportunity #6: StumbleUpon - It's not the most popular social network but it can still drive you thousands of visitors. You can buy clicks for pennies on the dollar through StumbleUpon Ads. If you want free traffic all you have to do is use their toolbar. Opportunity #7: Facebook groups - Similar to fan pages there are a lot of popular groups within your space. Help people within the groups and respond to their questions. As you respond to questions, feel free and link to your site if it is relevant and will help others. Use those 7 tactics and you will generate more traffic to your site.

Just look at the Neil Patel about page, it shares my life story, what I teach and how my mission is to help you. Because I connect with my readers that page has generated hundreds of comments. Without a story, you won't connect with your website visitors. And if you don't connect with them you won't generate as many sales. This strategy is so effective that it has also helped my Brazil about page receive hundreds of comments. In essence, it works in any language. The second thing you need to focus on is the benefit. How are you going to help people? By putting other people first, they are more likely to come back. Without that there is no reason for people to stick around. Third, you need to be impactful. What I mean by "impactful" is to use adjectives. This helps create an emotional connection. Fourth, you need to keep your about page short and to the point. If it is a video, try to keep it under 2 minutes. If it is text, keep it around 500 to 1000 words. And last but not least, you need to have an action point. After someone is done reading about you and your company, what should they do next? The action point helps solve this. For example, mine has a button to get in touch with me in regards to consulting opportunities.

Hey all! In this video, I share with you my thoughts on what you should make your website/YouTube channel about, as a continuation of our discussion last week on how you should start building a brand for yourself NOW. Essentially, there are two things you can make your website/channel on. 1. A 'diary' site where you go from 'zero to hero' as you either learn something new, experience something new, etc... Maybe you decided to start learning piano and want to be an expert in 2 years? Make a content site documenting your progress!! Same with online marketing, you can document your journey from noob to expert as you learn new content. Or maybe you decided to take a year off to travel - start a blog on all the countries you will visit and what your experience is with them! Really easy to do but it builds your brand and people LOVE this stuff! 2. If not creating this 'diary' site, you can create a site for something that you absolutely LOVE - assuming it's something legal of course. Remember, your brand is here to STAY for decades to come - so you cannot afford to invest in a site that you don't care about - it MUST be something you completely love and would 'do anyway' on a daily basis. Some of you may be thinking that if your hobbies include playing video games or watching TV, there is really nothing you are good at and can make a site on. Well you're totally wrong! There are so many websites and channels out there that THRIVE on playing games and/or watching movies, or whatever else it is you love to do, be it sports, eating, etc... You can literally type any hobby you have into Google and find that there are likely tons of blogs on it already - probably the most passionate ones being at the top. So start now! Build a blog on something you love and get started right away. You don't need to make it beautiful and perfect and place ads and all that at the start - start off just by slowly putting in a little bit of content every day and it will add up over time. Believe me, if you hate the content you are writing, you will not last long, so make sure it's something you are really passionate about. As mentioned, you don't need to start placing ads and monetizing it right away. Just build up your traffic and your audience first, as that's the hard part. The ads you can always add later on at any time. So you can make a review site if you like doing 'a lot of something' or you can just make a site dedicated to the one thing you really like - either way works and can be incredibly successful and profitable.
