Communicative Approach

07:54
in this video you will be able to have a general idea about communicative approach and many other information about it. Communicative language teaching rose to prominence in the 1970s and early 1980s as a result of many disparate developments in both Europe and the United States. First, there was an increased demand for language learning, particularly in Europe. The advent of the European Common Market led to This increased demand put pressure on educators to change their teaching methods. Traditional methods such as grammar translation assumed that students were aiming for mastery of the target language, and that students were willing to study for years before expecting to use the language in real life. However, these assumptions were challenged by adult learners who were busy with work, and by schoolchildren who were less academically able. Educators realized that to motivate these students an approach with a more immediate payoff was necessary. The trend of progressivism in education provided further pressure for educators to change their methods. Progressivism holds that active learning is more effective than passive learning, and as this idea gained traction in schools there was a general shift towards using techniques where students were more actively involved, such as group work. Foreign-language education was no exception to this trend, and teachers sought to find new methods that could better embody this shift in thinking. In the beginning time of language teaching, it was thought that language teaching is a cognitive matter. The idea then shifted from cognitive to socio-cognitive, which emphasizes that language can be learnt throughout the social process. However, in today's process of language teaching, incorporation of ICT has become mandatory in teaching any language.

Communicative Language Teaching: 40 Years On: A Public Presentation by Scott Thornbury

01:22:15
Join us for a public presentation by New School MA TESOL (http://newschool.edu/matesol) faculty Scott Thornbury, sponsored by English Language Studies (http://newschool.edu/public-engagement/school-of-languages-teaching) at The New School (http://newschool.edu) and Pearson English (http://pearsonelt.com). It is 50 years since Dell Hymes first coined the term ‘communicative competence’ and it took only another ten before the concept became the foundation of a new approach to second language teaching. Forty years on, where is the communicative approach? Are the goals of language teaching still communicative competence? If so, what happened to the idea that ‘you learn to communicate by communicating’? In this talk Scott Thornbury reviews the core concepts that inspired CLT, and traces how they were developed and then – through want of a coherent learning theory – abandoned. He will argue that it is well past time that we revisited the foundational principles of CLT and argue that there are now good grounds – including a coherent theory of learning (or two) – to rehabilitate it. Scott Thornbury (MATEFL, with distinction, University of Reading, UK), a native of New Zealand currently residing in Spain, is the series editor of the Cambridge Handbooks for Teachers series. He has been a prolific writer of books and articles for teachers and students and a tireless presenter at international ELT conferences, sharing the knowledge gained from his more than 30 years of experience as a teacher, teacher trainer, and CELTA and UCLES examiner. Acquisition Classroom Memo (13): Communicative Approach

07:01
This is a much-abridged version of Acquisition Classroom Memo (Issue 13) on the Communicative Approach. It reviews the 1971 study that is foundational to a Communicative Approach and that started the communicative testing movement. It defines communication, lists the principles of a communicative approach, and briefly reviews everything new about this approach. 40+ years ago, Sandra Savignon warned that we'd slap new labels on old approaches and would not align with what we know about second language acquisition, unless we considered and influenced teacher beliefs and feelings. The Acquisition Classroom Memo tries to do just that. Share this video and start the dialogue, so that Savignon's words aren't still relevant another 40 years from now. Subscribers received a 14-page memo. The memo reviews foundational, second language acquisition research and what it means for classroom teaching. Members can discuss the memos or start their own conversational threads on a private forum. The Natural Approach (Krashen)

04:35
Visit my blog with lots of resources for learning English: http://simonfilms.blogspot.com.es/2012/09/tutorial-para-aprender-ingles.html The Natural Approach is a method for beginners based on observation and interpretation on how a person acquires his first language. It emphasizes on communication rather than on grammar. One of the things which is very important and conclusive when learning is that the input has to be comprehensible. That is at least what Krashen has always said. Teach with a lot of comprehensible input that will allow the student to activate the acquisition process. But I also think that even if the input is not comprehensible you end up learning because some kind of unconscious learning. I mean if you spend a lot of time listening to a language (in the country) in the beginning all the input is not comprehensible but you sort of learn something, the accent, the intonation, some isolated words, sometimes some information which is linked with non verbal communication and so on and so forth.
