The issue of "QUALITY" in conference interpreting.

08:48
Former EU staff interpreter Dick Fleming discusses the all-important issue of quality in conference interpretation. Everyone swears by it, but what is it? Dick looks at it from two separate vantage points; firstly, that of the user of interpretation i.e. what does quality interpretation mean for a delegate?..and, secondly, that of the conference interpreter sitting on an EU test panel on the look-out for promising candidates capable of providing quality interpretation. LANGPROS - How Does Simultaneous Interpretation Work?

01:55
You may have seen interpreters on TV shows with foreign guests or at UN assemblies in the news. Have you ever imagined what their work is like? Well, it is an extremely challenging profession requiring a lot of training and experience. Ever wonder what are the differences between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation? Basically, in consecutive interpretation the speaker’s discourse alternates with the interpreter’s translation, with no need of any equipment. Instead, in simultaneous interpretation the speaker and the interpreter talk simultaneously, resulting in considerable time savings. This means that the interpreter listens to a speech and interprets it into a foreign language in real time. Simultaneous interpretation requires specific interpretation equipment, mainly a soundproof booth and headphones with a microphone for the interpreter and wireless receivers for the target audience. Since the human brain is not designed for listening and speaking at the same time, simultaneous interpreters must develop special neural pathways. They also need to prepare carefully before an event – for instance, if it is a convention on heart surgery, the interpreter will have to study the topic and related technical terminology. Moreover, they must keep up with the speed of the original speech and they must be able to work under pressure. Since this profession is highly demanding, interpreters always have to work in pairs and switch turns every 20 or 30 minutes. At Langpros we collaborate with the best simultaneous interpreters in the UAE and in the Gulf region. We are able to deal with events ranging from small business meetings to large international conferences from English or Arabic into over 100 languages and vice versa. We have made our name as a world leader not only in interpretation services but also in translation services. So if you are looking for a highly professional and friendly interpretation service for your next event, you just have to give us a call! Consecutive Interpretation, Alda Swarni Dewi

13:54
Interpretation means showing, explaining the meaning of something (either words or by artistic performance). Consecutive interpretation is the activity when the interpreter needs to take notes while listening to a speech, then does his or her interpretation during the pauses. This is commonly used when there are just two languages at work. The example just like in this video. --------------------------------------- I admit myself that I am not that good at video editing. I still need to learn more about this application. But I do hope, this video could help everyone understand and gain a piece of knowledge by watching this video. I am going to say sorry for my lecturer, Mr. Aunurrahman, that I could not make it as good as your expectation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On making this video, I am gonna say thank you so very much for Bang Setiadi, Bang Yoga as the Presidents and already did a great job for helping me. For my beloved little brothers and sisters of GenRe who helped me to keep silent while this video was being captured by Fesia Anjeli. and for my big sister, Sintya, thanks for helping me out on downloading Filmora application. ------------------------------------ I also use an instrument, the karaoke song of Scared to be lonely.

More than words | Laura Burian, Miguel Garcia & Barry Olsen | TEDxMonterey

11:01
Can you distinguish language translation from language interpretation? In what may be the first ever tri-lingual TEDx talk, Laura Burian, Barry Olsen, and Miguel Garcia demonstrate the power of human cognition as they explain the subtle but important differences between professional translators and interpreters with assistance from Weihao Zhang (Chinese) and Beatriz Rodriguez (Spanish). Laura Burian is Associate Professor of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation of Chinese and English at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She has worked as an in-house translator, interpreter, and legal assistant in the Beijing office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and freelanced as both a translator and interpreter in the US, mainland China, and Taiwan. Barry Olsen is Assistant Professor of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation of Spanish and Russian at the Monterey Institute and has been working as a conference interpreter and translator since 1993. Over the years he has interpreted for the U.S. State Department, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Organization of American States, National Geographic Society, C-SPAN Television, and many other public and private sector clients. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Finding The Right Interpreting Services

04:07
Do you need interpreting services but are not sure which mode of interpreting you should use (or even what the different modes are)? This short video will help put you on the right path for choosing the best interpreting services for your needs! Language Connections (http://www.languageconnections.com/) has been providing interpreting services for over 20 years. We provide simultaneous, consecutive, whispered, and bilateral interpreters for conferences, meetings, legal and medical appointments, workshops and so on. Choosing the mode of interpreting that is right for your event is the first step in choosing an interpreter. There are 4 basic modes of interpreting: Simultaneous, Whispered, Consecutive, and Bilateral. Simultaneous interpreting is the oldest form of interpreting. In this mode, the interpreter will usually be located in a soundproof booth, in the same room as the speaker. He or she will listen to the speaker talk through headsets, and interpret it at the same time as the speaker presents, into a microphone that transmits to wireless headsets worn by the audience. Simultaneous interpreters generally work in pairs, switching back and forth throughout the event. Simultaneous interpreting services are usually used for large conferences or events, as it is the least intrusive, and fastest mode. Whispered interpreting is similar to simultaneous interpreting, in that it is performed at the same time as the speaker talks. The difference lies in the fact that the interpreter does not speak the translation into a microphone, but rather whispers it into the ear of the client. Whispered interpreting services are best suited for individual audiences, and small groups of people sitting or standing close together. Consecutive interpreting requires the speaker to pause every few sentences to allow the interpreter to interpret. The interpreter will first listen to the speaker, and then during the pause, render his or her speech into the target language. It is best for interpreters to listen to whole thoughts instead of segments, to prevent meaning getting lost without context. Consecutive interpreting services can be carried out in long or short segments, and at times interpreters will rely on notes. It is an extremely accurate mode of interpreting; however, due to its slower, more disruptive nature, consecutive interpreting is best suited for meetings and medical, legal, or other community related events. Bilateral interpreting is similar in nature to consecutive interpreting, as the interpreter will interpret in between sentences; however, it is done in a two way manner. Consecutive interpreting generally involves the interpreter listening to speech in one language, and rendering it in another. Bilateral interpreting on the other hand requires the interpreter to listen to speech in one language, render it into a second language, listen to the reply in the second language, and render it back to the first language. In other words - it is two-way interpretation. Bilateral interpreting services are used for business meetings, negotiations, medical and legal appointments, and tourist or site visits. By reflecting on the nature of your event, and how the different modes of interpretation would work within it, you will be able to choose an interpreting style that is best suited for you. Language Connections provides interpreting services for all major languages and industries. We have extensive experience working in the Academic, Life Sciences, Energy and Advanced Technology, Legal, Business, and Government sectors among others.
