Do you need interpreting services but are not sure which mode of interpreting you should use (or even what the different modes are)?
This short video will help put you on the right path for choosing the best interpreting services for your needs!
Language Connections (http://www.languageconnections.com/) has been providing interpreting services for over 20 years. We provide simultaneous, consecutive, whispered, and bilateral interpreters for conferences, meetings, legal and medical appointments, workshops and so on.
Choosing the mode of interpreting that is right for your event is the first step in choosing an interpreter. There are 4 basic modes of interpreting: Simultaneous, Whispered, Consecutive, and Bilateral.
Simultaneous interpreting is the oldest form of interpreting. In this mode, the interpreter will usually be located in a soundproof booth, in the same room as the speaker. He or she will listen to the speaker talk through headsets, and interpret it at the same time as the speaker presents, into a microphone that transmits to wireless headsets worn by the audience. Simultaneous interpreters generally work in pairs, switching back and forth throughout the event.
Simultaneous interpreting services are usually used for large conferences or events, as it is the least intrusive, and fastest mode.
Whispered interpreting is similar to simultaneous interpreting, in that it is performed at the same time as the speaker talks. The difference lies in the fact that the interpreter does not speak the translation into a microphone, but rather whispers it into the ear of the client.
Whispered interpreting services are best suited for individual audiences, and small groups of people sitting or standing close together.
Consecutive interpreting requires the speaker to pause every few sentences to allow the interpreter to interpret. The interpreter will first listen to the speaker, and then during the pause, render his or her speech into the target language. It is best for interpreters to listen to whole thoughts instead of segments, to prevent meaning getting lost without context.
Consecutive interpreting services can be carried out in long or short segments, and at times interpreters will rely on notes. It is an extremely accurate mode of interpreting; however, due to its slower, more disruptive nature, consecutive interpreting is best suited for meetings and medical, legal, or other community related events.
Bilateral interpreting is similar in nature to consecutive interpreting, as the interpreter will interpret in between sentences; however, it is done in a two way manner.
Consecutive interpreting generally involves the interpreter listening to speech in one language, and rendering it in another. Bilateral interpreting on the other hand requires the interpreter to listen to speech in one language, render it into a second language, listen to the reply in the second language, and render it back to the first language.
In other words - it is two-way interpretation. Bilateral interpreting services are used for business meetings, negotiations, medical and legal appointments, and tourist or site visits.
By reflecting on the nature of your event, and how the different modes of interpretation would work within it, you will be able to choose an interpreting style that is best suited for you.
