BLOOD and MUD: " Making "Little Red Riding Hood" is an uncensored, unrestricted look and what goes into no budget filmmaking. It's a collection of b roll, outtakes and just plain lunacy that occured on the 10 day shooting schedule from October 26th to November 11th. Every Friday starting November 13th, a new episode chronicling the day will be uploaded.
DAY 3 (Adjusted Schedule) - October 31st. 2009
As I stated in the last video, we could not shoot in the woods as planned due to severe flooding on our set. So we adjusted and Now our Day 4 is Day 3.
Halloween. How do I love thee! Let me count the ways... Yes, the idea of shooting a horror movie on Halloween is exciting! Trouble was, I had made the bad idea of getting really fucking drunk the night before, at the producers house, which we were using to film the mother scene. Needless to say, trying to direct with a hangover isn't ideal at all. I had went over to hang, got all messed up, had to stay over, only to wake up a few hours later, head all the way home, shower, get the gear then head all the way back... And since it was Halloween, I spent the day in my costume... My hot, sweaty, costume... Thankfully the scenes weren't too crazy to get done.
Kyle and Angie were very gracious in allowing me to film in their apartment for the Mother scenes. All the scenes between Red and Her Mother were filmed on this day. It was only two scenes so there wasn't a lot to deal with. Hence why this video is the shortest of them all. Sandy Ayala is NOT an actress, but a close friend of Angie's who gave her two cents to charity by helping us out. She really did save my ass, because I was really determined to find someone who convincingly play a mother. Older actresses are very difficult to get a hold of. And young actresses lack the right look to play a mother, especially the mother of a 22 year old woman. So, yeah Sandy saved our asses, she is in reality the mother of a teenage girl, it wasn't much of a stretch for her. Boy was she nervous! She was tense at the beginning, it took her awhile to really get into the mode, but she found it and I think she did a fantastic job.
QUICK PLUG!!: Sandy is also a photographer, I suggest you look up her work, she operates under her full name, SANDRA AYALA. She's good.
Now Back to basics. The Mother scenes are good for many reasons. One it really helps set up Red and her relationship with her mom, which is actually more sisterly than parent/child. This comes from my cousin and how she acts with her mom, where they bicker like siblings. The original fable the mother is at the beginning and then is never heard from again. I wanted to created a more fleshed out character and really set up some things that when the film is viewed as a whole, make sense and really pay off.
Next up, Day 4. GRANDMA!!!!!
