Holidays on East Frisian Islands | Discover Germany
The seven East Frisian islands stretch in an arc off Germany's North Sea coast. Langeoog and Spiekeroog are two of them. Slow tourism is the watchword here. If you visit, you have to leave your car on the mainland and explore the islands in a horse-drawn tram, on foot or by bicycle. Read more on http://www.dw.de/dw/episode/0,,16141332,00.html

Political Jokes of East Germany
Sometimes I have the suspicion, that Socialism was the first hedonistic system on the globe. That is because of the bizarre politicains, characters and brands you found there. Actually I'm just pulling your leg, as in all totalitarian systems, humor was the only weapon available for the comon man to make his day-to-day-life bearable. And as in other totalitarian states it was risky to tell them. A lot of these Jokes were told in all Socialistic countries, with variations of course. Now, in the days of economical crisis, there are a lot who wish their Socialistic regimes back. But Socialism had and has it's problems which are shown in this video in a humorous way. Auferstanden aus Ruinen (DDR/East Germany) Parody, Thdubya
Don't miss my other anthems! So far, the parodies for the UK (twice), Canada, Germany, Norway, France, the US, Russia, Italy, Sweden, China, Japan, Israel, North Korea, Australia, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Denmark, Mexico, Turkey, CSA, Cuba, Spain, the Netherlands, India, Brazil, Greece, Scotland, Finland, The Vaitcan City State and more have been released. Auferstanden aus Ruinen (German for "Risen from Ruins") was the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), commonly known as East Germany, during its existence from 1949 to 1990. The lyrics were written by the poet Johannes R. Becher (who later became Minister of Culture). Two musicians proposed music to Becher's lyrics, and the version of Hanns Eisler was selected. Written in 1949, the anthem reflects the early stages of German separation, in which continuing progress towards reunification of the occupation zones was seen by most Germans as appropriate and natural. Consequently, Becher's lyrics develop several connotations of "unity" and combine them with "fatherland", meaning Germany as a whole. However, this concept soon would not conform to an increasingly icy Cold War context. I mean no offense to the countries parodied. In fact, most of these countries are my favorites, and I wish them all my best. Germany is among the top 15 of nations I like. Note: I have not added monetization for this video, and won't ever add it to any of my videos, since it's so annoying with the popup, and I'm not exactly at that level where I can actually earn anything from my 800 daily views (more or less). The ad was added automatically due to a suspected copyright claim on the orchestration.

East German Spy Station - "Tyrolean Music Station"
[CLICK CC for SUBTITLES] Tyrolean Music Station was a vintage numbers station reported around the 1970's. It was as if disguised as a music station playing several yodeling songs with embedded messages for "Helmut" and "Franz"(at least in this recording). Secret messages found in the broadcast are introduced by several notes from a music-box rendition of the socialist anthem, "The Internationale". As with most numbers stations its origins are uncertain but this operation was believed to be tied in to the USSR sponsored East German government, DDR - Deutsche Demokratische Republik specifically by the Ministry of State Security; a secret police agency commonly known as the 'Stasi'. Notes: The announcer's French accent lingering around his German broadcast has garnered questions about the origin of the Tyrolean numbers station but basic information still hold that the announcer might have been French but was working for the DDR/GDR. -------------------------------------------------------------- Update from May 2003. From AB, NL. More information on this station which casts doubt on the description provided by ENIGMA group. Station was run by the French Service de Documentation Extérieur et de Contre-Espionnage (SDECE). The note says: "Other French clandestine radio stations run by the SDECE were sending personal coded messages to underground agents on the other side of the Iron Curtain. One such SDECE unit broadcast Tyrolean music on 6425 kHz between 1130 and 1140 AM from the Chartres region, but it ceased its activities in 1975 after an article was published in a French magazine specializing in radio matters, called "Interferences (source:http://www.simonmason.karoo.net/) ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Ty.ro.le.an pertaining to the Tyrol or its inhabitants the Ty.rol or Ti.rol, an Alpine region in West Austria and North Italy.) Elections Prove Germany’s East West Divide Difficult To Overcome
Subscribe to Vesti News https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa8MaD6gQscto_Nq1i49iew?sub_confirmation=1 Germany is tallying the results of the Parliamentary elections which took place last Sunday. The biggest sensation is the triumphal appearance of a new Euro-skeptical party in the Parliament— The Alternative for Germany. They are really good at uncovering problems. And the configuration becomes ever more complicated. By the way, most of the Alternative voters are in the east of the country, which is the territory of the ex-GDR. That's the former German Democratic Republic. The head of our European office, Mikhail Antonov, went there for a visit.

East Germany's National Anthem - Auferstanden Aus Ruinen (1949 - 1990)
This is not an updated version. Sorry, mates. Just deleted and reuploaded. I'll do the Canadian National Anthem by a weeks time. English Literal Translation: Risen from ruins And facing the future, Let us serve you for the good, Germany, united fatherland. Old woes are to be overcome And we overcome them united Because we so must succeed, So that the sun beautiful as never before Over Germany shines, Over Germany shines. Happiness and peace be granted To Germany, our fatherland. All the world longs for peace, Reach your hand out to the peoples. If brotherly, we unite ourselves, We shall defeat the people's enemy. Let the light of peace shine So that a mother never more Mourns her son, Mourns her son. Let us plough, let us build, Learn and create like never before, And, confident in immanent strength, A free generation rises up. German youth, best efforts Of our people united in you, You will become Germany's new life. And the sun beautiful as never, Over Germany shines, Over Germany shines.

How Communist East Germany Held Thousands of Women as Political Prisoners | Op-Docs
This week’s Op-Doc is the haunting animated short, “Broken: The Women’s Prison at Hoheneck.” Directors Alexander Lahl and Volker Schlecht were inspired to make the film while writing a graphic novel, in which one of the characters was an East German swimmer who tried to escape the German Democratic Republic by swimming across the Baltic Sea to Denmark. She never arrived, as she was caught by the secret service (the “Stasi”) and sent to prison. This story was representative for many East German women, who were simply trying to flee a repressive regime for the relative freedom of the West and often sent to Hoheneck, the notorious women’s prison. A scriptwriter for this film, Max Mönch, had an aunt who was a political prisoner, and she told the filmmakers more about the harrowing experience of women there. As the directors write, “The general themes of repression in East Germany were not new for us. But as we did our research, we were surprised and enraged to learn that the thousands of women imprisoned at Hoheneck were forced into what seemed akin to slave labor, producing goods that were sold to the West for significant profit. For us, the relationship between East and West Germany suddenly became more complicated than we had previously understood.” More from The New York Times Video: Subscribe: http://bit.ly/U8Ys7n Watch all of our videos here: http://nytimes.com/video Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nytvideo Twitter: https://twitter.com/nytvideo ---------- Op-Docs is a forum for short, opinionated documentaries by independent filmmakers. German Reunification Explained In 11 Minutes
German Reunification almost didn't happen. It was opposed by nearly all world leaders. But there was one man who made it happen, one who convinced everybody, one man who vowed that Germany. Will. Be. United. Over time a wall was built between the two Germanies to make sure people from the poorer east could not emigrate to the richer west. In the 1980s the economic and social differences between the Capitalist West and the Communist east, were becoming apparent. Soon, peaceful protests broke out throughout the communist East, including East-Germany. Then, on the evening of November 9, 1989, the East-German press secretary made mistake that would change history Over time a wall was built between the two Germanies to make sure people from the poorer east could not emigrate to the richer west. In the 1980s the economic and social differences between the Capitalist West and the Communist east, were becoming apparent. Soon, peaceful protests broke out throughout the communist East, including East-Germany. Then, on the evening of November 9, 1989, the East-German press secretary made mistake that would change history in actuality, people could now apply to travel abroad in a few months, not right away. But the words were said, the people had heard, and thousands were flocking to the border crossings. Because the press secretary misspoke, people thought the gate was open. Without receiving orders, the border guards didn’t know what to do with the tens of thousands wanting to get through. And so, without being given orders to do so, the border guards opened the gates and let the East-German masses through the gates. You see, the British, French, United States, and Soviet Union still had troops on German soil. And they had so called ‘reserved rights’ meaning these four countries had to allow German reunification. And all four powers were basically having none of it. A unified Germany is a powerful Germany… and a powerful Germany had been their enemy in 2 world wars. But Helmut Kohl was not deterred: Germany. Will. Be. United. But now we have to look at the rest of Europe, particularly eastern Europe. Because, while East-Germany had been protesting, the rest of USSR’s client states were in similar stages of revolution. Within two years, the Soviet Union itself would collapse. Gorbachev was acutely aware of the state of his country and needed money to push through economic reforms he hoped would modernize the Soviet economy and, hopefully, keep the country together. East-Germany was broke and had to be kept afloat by continuous money supplies from the USSR. So what if, he could SELL it to West-Germany, he would lose his this large expense, gain some much needed income, and could gain this new powerful Germany as an important ally in European politics. But there were some conditions: no NATO bases in east-Germany and the Russian withdrawal was not allowed to be presented as a retreat. NATO agreed and so, West-Germany sent a delegation to Moscow to discuss Germany giving loans to the Soviet Union in exchange for German reunification. He did it! 3 of the 4 powers had agreed! The UK would soon join the other three and Germany. Will. Be. United. But now came one very important question: what territory does German reunification include? You see, large portions of land had been given to Poland and the Soviet Union after WWII, Helmut Kohl wanted all these lands returned as well: They were Germans, West-Germany had never given up its claim to these territories, and they should be returned to Germany as well! It was one thing to ask for two countries to become one, it was a whole other matter to demand Soviet and Polish territory to just be handed over after 45 years. And so, the other four powers basically told Helmut Kohl: it’s East-Germany or nothing. In the end Kohl relented. He agreed that the newly formed Germany would relinquish all claims to Polish and Soviet territory in exchange for reunification. And so it was done. The Soviet Union pulled its forces back from East-Germany in 1990, the four powers ended their occupation of the two Germanies, and a single unified Germany had been born. It was time to party. Because: Germany. Had. Been. United!

This interesting recording was uploaded by Purge1212 (https://bit.ly/2TqHoJ9). They're hella underrated so by all means check 'em out. Thanks to Honest Anthems: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEBU62SE7T1DCAEHgI0SAYQ for helping me translate! Wenn Die Soldaten is a traditional German military march. This version emerged during the DDR and has heavy anti-west themes, with references to nuclear holocaust and fighting to the death against the United States. Germany (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Germany. Germany is situated in the middle of Europe and is a land of diverse culture and tradition, from Bavarian homeliness in the south, and mediaeval splendour within its centre, to its flourishing lifestyle in the east and large commercial cities in the north, it is a country which extends from the Alps to the North Sea. The episcopal city of Passau nestles between hills at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz. High above the rivers and strategically perched on a rock is the castle complex of Veste Oberhaus, imposing and impregnable. The salt trade enriched the town and Italian baroque masters were allowed to create the cityscape of the historic old town. Beginning in Würzburg On The Main, the Romantic Road leads to various well known historic cities, castles and palaces. Between 1642 and the middle of the eighteenth century, three prince-bishops gave the city its Baroque architecture and also the castle known as The Residence. Nuremberg is the ‘secret capital’ of German Franconia and ‘treasure trove of the German Reich’, the epitome of German romanticism and tradition with a long history and also bitter memories of quite recent times. An Imperial City which indeed became the City Of Party Rallies but which has never lost its benevolent spirit. Dresden is the capital of the German free state of Saxony, a major centre of culture with a remarkable history. Although almost completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War and for many years hidden behind the Iron Curtain, today the city shines out in all of its former splendour. Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and for many centuries was a gateway to the world and a work of art with many different faces. Each year on the seventh of May, Harbour Birthday is celebrated when people from all over the world gather within the various galleries of the landing stages to celebrate a huge festival. With its culture and many diverse and beautiful landscapes, Germany is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us.

People smuggling in Germany - a multibillion dollar business | DW Documentary
People smugglers help tens of thousands of illegal migrants enter Europe each year with fraudulently obtained tourist or study visas. Their methods are becoming more and more refined. In one instance, migrants were charged 8,000 euros per person to come to Germany on fraudulently obtained tourist visas. The head of the people smuggling ring - run by a family with Syrian and Polish roots - has now been arrested. But another gang in the eastern German state of Saxony is still running an operation that exploits a legal loophole. The people smugglers - in this case with German and Indian roots - organize sham marriages between Romanian or Czech women and Indian or Pakistani men. The men pay 20,000 euros to enter the EU. Police in Germany have managed to break up a number of people smuggling rings in recent years, but new structures quickly spring up again. The smugglers work internationally. Cross-border cooperation between law enforcement agencies is essential if authorities are to have any chance of combatting the problem. The United Nations estimate that smuggling migrants generates profits of some seven billion dollars a year. ___________________________________________________ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. 400 Blackwater private soldiers in Ukraine's east: German media
German media report mercenaries from a notorious private American security company have been deployed to Ukraine to support the country's operation in the east. According to Bild and Der Spiegel, 400 mercenaries from Academi-- previously known as Balckwater, are on the ground near the eastern city of Luhansk. They're reportedly involved in the army operations against pro-Russian activists. The German newspapers have cited Germany's federal intelligence agency BND as the source. According to BND's assessments, the US intelligence services had prior information about the covert involvement of mercenaries in Ukraine. Blackwater has a record of atrocities against civilians and arms smuggling into Iraq during the US occupation of the country. Russia has recently accused the US of complicity in Ukraine's military assault in the east.
