Videographic: How advertising spending has changed in America

01:02
Media to watch: An animated infographic showing changes in advertising spending over the years. Media to watch. Changes in advertising spending over the years. In 1980, newspapers accounted for nearly half of all media advertising -- 40 billion dollars a year. Magazines held about a tenth, as did radio. TV and film garnered 30 billion. And outdoor adverts the rest. Over the decade, newspaper ads grew. As did others -- notably a 40 percent increase in TV and film. And despite dips, for the next 15 years media advertising grew until the financial crisis. Then it fell off a cliff. Since then, it’s grown mostly due to internet ads. Most other media stayed steady. But newspapers ads continued to drop. Today, newspapers ad income is half what it was in 1980 -- and half of internet ad spending too. And these trends are expected to continue. All traditional media has suffered. But newspapers most of all. For more video content from The Economist visit our website: http://econ.st/1vJDt98

The Economist Tells Brand Stories To Dodge Ad Disruption, Paul Rossi explains

06:49
MIAMI - After 172 years in print, The Economist magazine should know a thing or two about two key media topics - business models, and cyclicality. Paul Rossi thinks he has a radar for both. That's why the publication's president is pushing the respected, independent and sometimes straight title to produce content on behalf of advertisers. "There is huge disruption happening with viewability, ad blocking, ad fraud, putting a real question mark around the viability of purely-advertising businesses," he tells Beet.TV in this video interview. "The future is around premium brands and business models that have two legs to the table." By that, Rossi means both advertiser and consumer funding - the historic duality that has been the news publishing industry's strength. But Rossi is pushing to augment that first leg with something of the new advertiser landscape - branded content, produced by The Economist, for brands. "That side of our business grew last year by nearly 40%," he says. "We can see that graph continuing. We’re very confident we’ve got the right structure to service where marketers are pushing their money, which is increasingly owning their own content and storytelling for audiences. "We have a whole legacy business built on storytelling. We are increasingly working directly with clients, there are no agencies in the mix, we’re creating programs … in a way that is game-changing for everyone." Even as more marketers begin to pay for a different kind of marketing, however, Rossi doesn't want to neglect the other leg to his table - paying readers. In fact, it sounds like his top online circulation priority is to grow the base of subscribers in the world's biggest market, the US. This video was recorded at the 4A's Transformation conference in Miami. For additional interviews, please visit this page. Beet.TV's coverage of the 4A's was sponsored by The Trade Desk.

The Economist: Raising Eyebrows and Subscriptions | Case study

01:59
This case study shows how The Economist, an international news publication, used a targeted campaign to increase its reader base and sales. After a successful campaign that had portrayed The Economist as a must-read publication for the entrepreneurial classes, circulation had started to plateau and the audience had lost its connection to a magazine they deemed as a 'handbook for the corporate elite'. The Economist devised a campaign focused on the provocative nature of truth, a common interest for readers and non-readers, using humorous and accessible tagline ads. Knowing that future buyers resemble current readers, the company used social media, media partnerships and subscriber profiling, while generating real-time ads triggered when a user is reading about a topic covered by The Economist. The campaign is already responsible for delivering £51.7m in lifetime revenue and a revenue ROMI of over 25:1 from its year one spend of £2.03m.

This is how to read "The Economist" newspaper for free. All the steps are labeled in the video which will clearly show you how to read any article for free and print them as well without needing to pay for a subscription which over time, if you read other news sources as well, will get way too expensive. The Economist is a solid newspaper that I read and I decided to share this with you as well, especially if you just read the news, if you need this for research, or if you need this for school. Hopefully this helped, and if it did, be sure to subscribe for more lifehacks like these that I use on a daily basis to save money and to save time! Susan Clark The Economist

02:41
The Economist Ascending: "Global Mass Niche" Title Beats Business Week for Ad Pages in the U.S. The Economist is on fire: Ad pages have passed Business Week in the U.S. and the business title was ranked fourth most successful by Advertising Age in the annual magazine "A List" published earlier this week. Susan Clark At the paidContent conference in New York earlier this week, I caught up with Susan Clark, Global Marketing Director and Publisher, Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa. We spoke after her panel. She describes the venerable title as "global mass niche" -- which I take to mean the creation of extremely authoritative content for a very smart, niche audience. Felix Salmon at Portfolio.com has good post on this very topic. The Economist is one of our favorite publications here at the purple channel. I just wish I had more time to read the magazine every week. You can grab the code of my interview right here. -- Andy Plesser Posted on Thursday, November 01, 2007
