FOLLOW US! http://www.ripleys.com https://www.facebook.com/RipleysBelieveItorNot https://www.twitter.com/Ripleys https://www.instagram.com/ripleysodditorium https://plus.google.com/+Ripleys/ Snapchat - RipleysBION Lily slippers are quintessential Ripley’s…These are more than just shoes! These are a means to an ancient and very serious body modification—foot binding. Binding became a popular means of displaying status in China. The first recorded foot binding occurred in the 10th century. According to lore, Emperor Li Yu built a gilded stage in the shape of a lotus flower for his favorite concubine to dance upon. Dancing on her toes, her feet were bound in a hoof-like shape and adorned with precious stones and ribbons. As this young woman was the emperor’s favorite, women attempted to imitate her to gain the emperor’s favor—making the practice fashionable. So, from the royal court, foot binding spread throughout China, beginning in the south of the country and soon reaching the north. In the 12th century, the practice had become much more widespread, and by the mid-17th century, every girl who wished to marry—and marry rich—had her feet bound. The most desirable bride possessed a 3-inch foot! That perfect 3-inch foot would fit perfectly into these shoes! As you can see, these lily slippers are made of fabric, often silk, but have a very firm heel. The colorful nature of these shoes, and the curled tips found on some, were meant to evoke the image of the Lotus Flower. The Lotus feet binding process began in childhood, when a girl was about 5 or 6, and was typically carried out by an elder female—just not the girl’s mother as she would possibly be too sympathetic to her child’s pain. First, her feet were plunged into either hot water or a mixture of animal blood and herbs, followed by her toenails being clipped very short and the being massaged and oiled. All of the toes except the big toes would be broken and bound flat against the sole of the foot, making a triangle shape. The foot we be bent double, staining the arch. To secure this position, the feet were bound with silk strips measuring ten feet long and two inches wide. These wrappings would be briefly removed every two days to prevent infection (the tight binding meant circulation was cut off and any injury wouldn’t heal properly). Sometimes, excess flesh would be cut away or even encouraged to rot. Over time, the wrappings became tighter, and the shoes smaller as the heel and sole were slowly crushed together. Throughout this process, which took two years to complete, the girls were encouraged to walk long distances to hasten the breaking of their arches.

Top 10 different perspectives of the term 'sexy' from countries around the world. Beauty, sexiness and being 'hot' are all relative depending on which religion, tribe, culture and country you live in. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg Description: When it comes to the definition of sexy, it isn’t a black and white argument. What one person may consider ugly, another person may see it as stunning. As the old saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and the definition of sexy certainly changes depending which border you have crossed. What these differences lead to is a beautiful variety of sexiness that can appeal to many people. Plus, if any of these women cross cultures, then a new practice and tradition is introduced thanks to the open definition of sexy. Especially in North America, where it has become a melting pot of different cultural practices, the definition of sexy has changed over the last several decades. This is also thanks to the Internet and social media for connecting us all together and leading us to discuss what is beautiful. There has been a lot of controversy when it comes to what is sexy and what is not. Recently, it has been exposed that women will go to great lengths to hurting themselves in order to fit into the definition of sexy. This has caused a revolution in how the world perceives standards of beauty. For example, in ancient China, the practice of foot binding was an extreme in what women would do to make themselves more appealing to the opposite sex. This practice caused severe deformations in women’s feet, and alarmed people around the world. But when the 20th century rolled around, the practice was exposed and shunned. In Japan, having wild and crazy styles, also known as “Gyaru”, is a new fashion trend that is considered to be sexy among the Japanese people. This includes hair that is two different colors, crazy outfits, and insane makeup. Not only does it attract the attention of those around you, it also has the potential to attract mates. Sexy is a funny thing, especially in the country of Iran, where having battle scars from a nose job has more odd of landing you a date than putting on makeup. From piercings to body modifications, this video contains a list of several countries around the world and how they define sexy according to their cultural history. It is fascinating to review these beliefs, as they have all contributed to our standards of beauty in one way or another. While the past has a lot of influence in our modern day beliefs, it is up to us to set the standard of sexy for the future. But it is up to us on how strict we make that standard. Some of the definitions of what is sexy is dated, and is slowly becoming redefined in several counties. Hopefully, the changing of this definition around the world will contribute to the betterment of society and will encourage people to love the body and skin they are in no matter what size or color they are. In the future, it would be a sign of great progress when the definition of sexy is just natural beauty without the manipulation of surgery or other products. Over the past few years we’ve worked with many specialists in the field of human anatomy to develop a process that enables you to optimise your stance to get the very best performance from your snowboard board, taking into account your body and your style of riding. Most riders have developed their stance from a combination of trial and error thrown together with a little bit of riding fashion and trends, or by just going with whatever their first rental shop set them up with. In reality it makes much more sense to begin by tuning your equipment to work with your existing anatomy. Our method helps you find your natural snowboard 'stance' - the distance between your feet whilst riding - by using the distance from your heel to your knee. This creates a triangle shape between your centre of mass that optimises balance against comfort, and from here you can tune your binding angles and stance width to best suit the type of snowboarding you'll be doing.

纏小腳, 裹小腳, or 三寸金蓮 = Foot binding was the custom of applying tight binding to the feet of young girls to modify the shape of the foot. The practice possibly originated among upper-class court dancers during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period in Imperial China (10th or 11th century), then became popular among the elite during the Song dynasty and eventually spread to all social classes by the Qing dynasty. Was he the Worlds Greatest Overland Explorer or the Biggest Liar? Perhaps no land journey in human history is more famous than Marco Polos legendary 24-year trek across Asia. But was it all just a big lie? As described in his 1299 book, The Description of the World, the peripatetic Venetian merchant encountered such wonders as the singing sand dunes of Dunhuang, China, mountains of salt in present-day Afghanistan, and the glories of the Mongol court of Kublai Khan. Generations of Europeans were spellbound by Polos account, yet in recent years some scholars have questioned its authenticity. For an extensive three part series in National Geographic, veteran photographer Michael Yamashita put the famed Venetians reputation to the ultimate test using Polos own book as his travel guide for a journey in the celebrated explorers footsteps. Yamashita retraced Polos route across ten countries, from Venice through restricted areas in Iraq and war zones in Afghanistan, over the old Silk Road into China and back again by way of Southeast Asia and India. Along the way he encountered many landmarks and peoples documented in Polos book, deepening his conviction that Polos account is indeed authentic. Yamashita shares dazzling images and fascinating stories from his own journey to the East, while making a strong, personal case for the veracity of the reports of his 13th-century predecessor. Yamashitas search for Marco Polo led to this series of documentary films that first aired on the National Geographic Channel Asia. Three 30-minute episodes, shot on 16 mm film. Initial airing: March 2004, National Geographic Channel Asia. Asian TV Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Music Score

One day I did a foot binding on my size 10 1/2 foot and made it considerably smaller. It is painful, but the result is amazing. Here's the bound foot and then me unwrapping it. I know there are different forms of binding. This is NOT meant to portray the "Lotus" binding which involves breaking the foot at the arch and folding the toes underneath. This was meant to show what some of my admirers prefer me to do before I get in my wheelchair.

A video that explores the ways in which the custom of Foot binding, outlawed in 1912, and waist binding of the 19th century were similar, with a particular focus on why foot binding was seen as so barbaric in comparison to waist binding. 00:07 - Jakobsen, Janet R., Ann Pellegrini, Securalisms: a social text book (Durham: Duke University Press, 2008) p.220. 00:35 - Jackson, Beverly, Splendid slippers: A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition (Berkeley: TEN SPEED PRESS, 1997) pp.51-57. 01:32 - All that is interesting, Uploads, http://all-that-is-interesting.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/corset-1.jpg 01:36 - ‘Women's Kingdom’, The Toronto Daily Mail, 26 May 1883 p.5 01:33 dainty figure 01:48 - Dickens, Charles, ALL THE YEAR ROUND (Piccadilly: Oxford university, 1868) p.67 02:00 - IMAGE - STAYLACE corset gallery, Famous Tightlacers from the Past - Royals & Aristocrats, http://www.staylace.com/gallery/gallery05/index_royal.html 02:11 - Youtube, 'gone with the wind 18 and a half inch waist corset 37' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd6zQrcQ9YE 02:21 - Jackson, Beverly, Splendid slippers: A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition (Berkeley: TEN SPEED PRESS, 1997) pp. 103-114. 02:34 - Jackson, Beverly, Splendid slippers: A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition (Berkeley: TEN SPEED PRESS, 1997) pp. 103 -114. 03:01 - Jackson, Beverly, Splendid slippers: A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition (Berkeley: TEN SPEED PRESS, 1997) pp. 112. 3:25 - Kuehn, Julia, ‘Knowing Bodies, Knowing Self: The Western Woman Traveller's Encounter with Chinese Women, Bound Feet and the Half-Caste Child 1880–1920’ in Studies in Travel Writing, 12:3 (2008), pp. 265. 03:58 - Art and Picture Collection, The New York Public Library. PRADA Spring Summer 2013 Milan - Fashion Channel The show opened with a stark little black dress -- a white flower creeping up the chest -- in the kind of precise, abbreviated shape you think of when you think 1960s. The focus was on the feet: wafer-flat pale pink leather zip-up sock boots with a kind of ribbon thong. The footwear was the thing: with every outfit -- neat, sharp, black, navy or white, a red flower (the type a child might draw) appliqued on skirts, stamped on bags, printed in clusters on coats -- the shoes rose. Literally. Higher and higher the platforms stacked, sometimes in wood with a fist-sized hole in the middle, or sprouting a metallic boot, and culminating in the most lavishly decorated Geisha shoe/boot with red ribbon wrapped around the ankle, that recalled the ancient act of foot binding. The second act -- in terms of the clothes -- looked to origami for inspiration, all rectangular folds, falling sashes and kimono sleeves. All cut from the palest pink and mint green duchess satin, following the same short sharp spare shapes as before and with the addition of duster coats and naïve embroideries of that symbolic red flower.
