Scott Henkel, an assistant professor in the Department of English and in African American and Diaspora Studies, presents “The Humanities and the Land Grant University Mission from the 19th to the 21st Century.” In this public presentation, he explores the history and future of land-grant universities. The lecture was presented by the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research (WIHR) and the UW President’s Office. (UW Press Release) University of Wyoming, like other land-grant universities across the country, was established under the Morrill Act of 1862. The U.S. government gave land to state and territorial governments so institutions of higher learning could be endowed to benefit all citizens of that region through practical research, outreach and quality education for all, not just the wealthy or elite. “Since their founding in the 19th century, land-grant universities have been among the primary institutions designed to engage the public in the broadest range of humanistic, scientific and cultural education,” Henkel says. “They were first imagined amid the Civil War and Reconstruction, as part of the effort, in W.E.B. DuBois’s words, to seize ‘the opportunity for a real and new democracy in America’; they were then built to serve the needs of people whose potential had yet to be fulfilled.” Henkel presents a history of what the land-grant university has been, in order to ask what its mission could be in the 21st century. The Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research at UW sponsored the event, which was free and open to the public. The mission of the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research (WIHR) is to promote, support, and showcase humanities scholarship across the university and state. Starbucks has opened its third profit-sharing community store in the East End community of Houston. The other two community stores are in Los Angeles and New York. A share of the profits from each store goes to specific organizations that serve the needs of the citizens in that community. In Houston, the funds will go to the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans, which helps disadvantaged and at-risk youth in the East End. The Houston store opening comes on the one-year anniversary of the Starbucks Community Store pilot program. Domtar is teaming up with First Book to provide 20,000 books to schoolchildren. The Montreal-based fiber products company will work with the Washington D.C.-based organization by giving $25,000 dollars in grants to schools and community programs to be used at the First Book Marketplace, a Web site that provides age-appropriate children's books at prices 50 to 90 percent below retail cost. S.A.P. has been ranked as the software sector leader by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the sixth consecutive year. S.A.P. received a score of 84 percent based on economic, environmental, and social criteria, an eight percent improvement over last year's score. 4 Reasons Why The Rotary Engine Is Dead. The Wankel engine was last seen in a production car in the Mazda RX-8, and currently there are no rotary engines in production. Mazda may bring it back in the RX Vision, however there are many disadvantages to the rotary engine which has kept it from being successful. Rotary engines have a low thermal efficiency as a result of a long combustion chamber and unburnt fuel making it to the exhaust. They also have problems with rotor sealing as a result of uneven temperatures in the combustion chamber since combustion only occurs in one portion of the engine. Oil consumption is also a problem, as oil is injected to add lubrication and help keep the rotor sealed. Finally, emissions are poor and fuel economy is terrible, and ultimately this is the cause of it’s death. Youth activist and philanthropist, Lola Flomen, truly believes that everyone has the capacity to change the world. The Montreal native quickly realized that one’s age does not determine one’s impact: at ten, she cut her hair to make wigs for cancer patients, at twelve she began to work at various grassroots organizations: befriending special needs children, raising money for new projects at the Children’s Hospital and generated a substantial donation for the JGH. At age 15, Lola took her passion internationally, volunteering in South Africa, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Thailand, Kenya and India. Her endeavors aboard included running educational programs for HIV children, special needs children, young refugees and lent her support for youth in safe houses. Among her many projects, Lola has helped to build homes, schools, gardens, and a kitchen and has helped to establish sustainable water sanitation projects. For Lola, community service is a way of life that anyone who is passionate about anything can follow. Recipient of numerous community service awards including the Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Medal in 2014, now seventeen, Lola’s desire is to empower her generation to be the change.
