According to legend, Colorado’s Cheyenne Mountain is a sleeping dragon that many years ago saved the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. In the Native American story, the Great Spirit punished the people by sending a massive flood, but after they repented, it sent a dragon to drink the water away. The dragon, engorged by the massive amount of water, fell asleep, was petrified and then became the mountain. Unlike the dragon of legend, the Cheyenne Mountain Complex has never slept during 50 years of operations. Since being declared fully operational in April 1966, the installation has played a vital role in the Department of Defense during both peacetime and wartime. Following his studies, he became a researcher testing nuclear submarine reactor units at the Alexandrov Scientific Institute. On the night of June 20, 1979, an explosion occurred inside the institute's nuclear submarine test tank, killing two workers. While analyzing the accident, Oleg learned of other whitewashed serious mishaps, including the nuclear meltdown of a submarine reactor some five years before – an accident turned state secret. Oleg tells us: "That is when I understood I need to use my knowledge not for military research, but to protect nature from the nuclear industry." Together with 1999 Nuclear-Free Future Award laureate Lydia Popova, Oleg is a founding member and, since Lydia's passing, chairperson of the GREEN WORLD Council. From 1998 to 2003, Bodrov was the moving spirit behind the Clean Baltic Coalition. In 2004, nominated by the environmental community, Oleg was named Russia's "Green Person of the Year." Since 2006, Bodrov has published a number of manuscripts and produced four documentary films on the technical and social aspects of decommissioning nuclear power plants, labors that have not only reshaped thinking at RosAtom (the State Corporation for Nuclear Energy in Russia), but sparked interest internationally among government authorities and concerned citizens beset by the same problem: what to do when the reactor's time has come? Bodrov has traveled with his PowerPoint presentations to Lithuania, Belarus, Germany, England, and the USA. Our laureate describes his role in the push for a nuclear-free world as that of a "philosopher-organizer."

Nuclear Reactor - Understanding how it works | Physics Elearnin video Nuclear reactors are the modern day devices extensively used for power generation as the traditional fossil fuels, like coal, are at the breach of extinction. A nuclear reactor is the source of intense heat which is in turn used for generation of power in nuclear power station. Its mechanism is similar to that of a furnace in a steam generator; the steam is used to drive the turbines of the electric generator system. A nuclear reactor consists of three crucial components: Fuel elements, moderator and control rods. Fuel elements come usually in the shape of thin rods of about 1cm in diameter and contain fissionable nuclei, like Uranium (235 92U or 238 92U). These rods vary in number according to the size of the reactor, in large power reactor thousands of fuel elements are placed close to each other. This region where these fuel elements are placed is called the reactor core. These fuel elements are normally immersed in water which acts as a moderator. The objective of a moderator is to slow down the energy neutrons in a nuclear reactor which are produced during the nuclear fission process by the fuel elements. Thermal neutrons, which are neutrons with energy of about 0.04 electron volts, are capable of producing fission reaction with 235 92U. During the fission reaction process, new neutrons are given out which have energies of about 1 MeV. These neutrons of typically escape from participating in another fission process as they are accompanied by enormous energy release. In f -ct, the probability of these neutrons produce another fission reaction is 500 times less than as compared to that of a thermal neutron. This is where moderator is extremely useful. Moderator has the capability to slow down, or in other words moderate, the speed of these high-energy neutrons, so that they can in turn be used for a chain reaction to trigger multiple fission reactions of other 235 92U nucleus. Commonly, ordinary or heavy water is used as moderator in nuclear reactors because of the deuterons present in them which are capable of slowing the neutron speed. Water molecules in the moderator are useful in slowing down the high-energy neutrons which leave the fuel-element after nuclear fission. These high-energy neutrons collide with water molecules thereby losing out on some energy with every collision and therefore slow down substantially. A new fission reaction can now be triggered using this slow neutron by striking it with the fuel element. The third and of the most prominent part of a nuclear reactor are the control rods. In order to get a steady output of energy from the nuclear reactor, every single nuclear fission reaction should trigger another fission reaction and ensure the availability of a spare neutron released to trigger the chain reaction. By controlling the number of spare neutrons available at any given time, the rate of the nuclear fission chain reaction can be controlled. This control on the fission reaction can be maintained using the control rods. The main function of the control rods is to absorb any excess or spare neutron in the moderator in order to prevent any further fission reaction. Usually such control rods are made of Boron or Cadmium. To increase the rate of fission reactions, these rods can be removed from the moderator. A steady output of energy can be thus maintained by inserting or removing the control rods in the nuclear reactor. Now that we know the components of a nuclear reactor, let us understand the working of a nuclear reactor. It is usually enclosed in a shield made of thick concrete walls. It consists of a reactor core, pump and heat exchanger. The reactor core and pump are in placed in contact with the water, which is usually the heat exchanger used in reactors. Due to the enormous amount of heat released dusing nuclear fission reaction, this surrounding water gets heated up and changes to steam, which is in turn used to turn the turbines. Thus huge heat energy gets converted into electrical energy. Water is continuously flown in and out of the nuclear reactor using the pump. Thus a nuclear reactor successfully generates nuclear energy from fission reaction.

MOOCs in Nuclear Engineering – Challenges and(...)
Serie: New educational tools for nuclear engineering Fecha de emisión: 20-11-2014 The particular situation of the nuclear sector raises important ETI (Education, Training and Information) needs, where new educational tools and methodologies, and MOOCs in a special way, may play an important role. Nuclear engineers and other specialized personnel working in the sector are ageing, and also new competences are needed for the new conceptual designs of the future nuclear power plants. Furthermore, there is a growing interest to disseminate open online educational contents to society on these subjects. The objective is to shorten the knowledge gap between specialists and the general public. This trend is also in line with European Union objectives, specially regarding the efficient use of resources and the growth of the impact assessment of ETI activities. Following the results of an extensive search on open educational resources developed by our team, this situation contrasts with the very scarce offer of open courses on nuclear engineering. In this context, we implemented within FP7 ENEN-III Project in 2013 a full distance pilot course. The course addressed “Accelerator Driven Systems for Nuclear Waste Transmutation”, a hot research topic with a very demanded benefit for society: the decrease of the volume and radiotoxicity of the high level radioactive waste generated in the nuclear power plants. The success of this experience moved us to go forward and design a MOOC, based on this material and all the lessons learned. A multidisciplinary team was gathered to further continue MOOCs development in nuclear engineering. MOOCs offer new and interesting opportunities in the nuclear sector. Topics like collaborative work, peer-to-peer evaluation and transnational education gain a main role in this type of courses. Also, Learning Analytics applied to massive courses like MOOCs may allow the acquisition of very extensive and reliable data on the learning process, and new business opportunities emerge as MOOCs are developed, i.e. for finding qualified personnel to staff the new positions in the nuclear arena. Nevertheless new challenges arise when we talk about MOOCs in this context. One is having enough number of participants to enhance collaborative work and to gather statistically significant information. Subjects like course dissemination play a decisive role. At present we participate in a proposal of a European project within H2020 led by ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network), in which our team shall implement two MOOCs in collaboration with TECNATOM, the first Spanish training provider in the nuclear sector. [IR Version] Song performed by Third Generation of 1979 (TGO 1979). New Scientist Magazine: Iran showing fastest scientific growth of any country. It might be the Chinese year of the tiger, but scientifically, 2010 is looking like Iran's year. Scientific output has grown 11 times faster in Iran than the world average, faster than any other country. A survey of the number of scientific publications listed in the Web of Science database shows that growth in the Middle East mostly in Turkey and Iran is nearly four times faster than the world average. Science-Metrix, a data-analysis company in Montreal, Canada, has published a detailed report (PDF) on "geopolitical shifts in knowledge creation" since 1980. "Asia is catching up even more rapidly than previously thought, Europe is holding its position more than most would expect, and the Middle East is a region to watch," says the report's author, Eric Archambault. World scientific output grew steadily, from 450,000 papers a year in 1980 to 1,500,000 in 2009. Asia as a whole surpassed North America last year. Nuclear, nuclear, nuclear Archambaut notes that Iran's publications have emphasised inorganic and nuclear chemistry, nuclear and particle physics and nuclear engineering. Publications in nuclear engineering grew 250 times faster than the world average although medical and agricultural research also increased. Science-Metrix also predicts that this year, China will publish as many peer-reviewed papers in natural sciences and engineering as the US. If current trends continue, by 2015 China will match the US across all disciplines although the US may publish more in the life and social sciences until 2030. China's prominence in world science is known to have been growing, but Science-Metrix has discovered that its output of peer-reviewed papers has been growing more than five times faster than that of the US. Euro-puddings Meanwhile, "European attitudes towards collaboration are bearing fruit", writes Archambaut. While Asia's growth in output was mirrored by North America's fall, Europe, which invests heavily in cross-border scientific collaboration, held its own, and now produces over a third of the world's science, the largest regional share. Asia produces 29 per cent and North America 28 per cent. Scientific output fell in the former Soviet Union after its collapse in 1991 and only began to recover in 2006. Latin America and the Caribbean together grew fastest of any region, although its share of world science is still small. Growth in Oceania, Europe and Africa has stayed at about the same rate over the past 30 years. Only North American scientific output has grown "considerably slower" than the world as a whole. "The number of papers is a first-order metric that doesn't capture quality," admits Archambaut. There are measures for quality, such as the number of times papers are cited, and "Asian science does tend to be less cited overall". But dismissing the Asian surge on this basis is risky, he feels. "In the 1960s, when Japanese cars started entering the US market, US manufacturers dismissed their advance based on their quality" but then lost a massive market share to Japan. The important message, he says, is that "Asia is becoming the world leader in science, with North America progressively left behind".

Presented by Dr Jim Mason Biography Jim has a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada and a Ph.D. in experimental Nuclear Physics from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario Canada (under Dr M.W. (Martin) Johns, then Head of the Physics Department). After a year on the faculty of the Physics Department at the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada immediately following completion of his Ph.D. studies, he took a job with one of Canada's major defence electronics system integration companies where he worked for 37 years. The first 20 years he spent developing passive and active sonar systems for shipborne, airborne and fixed applications that are in use with the Canadian, Portuguese, Belgian, Swedish and US Navies. The subsequent 17 years he spent developing integrated, secure, digital voice and data ground mobile tactical communications systems that are used by the Canadian and British armies. During his career, Jim held positions in software engineering, system engineering, program management and line management, including VP Engineering and Chief Technology Officer responsible for research and development. He served for several years on the company's Executive Committee. Jim grew up attending church regularly in a mainline Protestant denomination, reaching high school graduation without ever hearing the message of salvation and left the church and the faith when he took Geology 101 in first year engineering. Although he and his family resumed church attendance (in another mainline Protestant denomination) because he and his wife thought it would be good for their two young girls, it wasn't until almost his 40th birthday that he heard the message of salvation when attending an evangelical church in response to the invitation of a friend and neighbour and subsequently accepted Christ. However, Jim was initially what might be called a bi-polar Christian, believing in the salvation provided by Jesus but also believing in the evolutionary account of origins, the big bang, etc. It wasn't until he attended a weekend seminar conducted by young-earth creation scientists where he saw that science and scripture were completely coherent. Since that time, largely as a result of information available from CMI, he has become increasingly amazed at how the truth of scripture is confirmed in every area of science and become increasingly concerned about how evolution is used as a means to avoid confronting the claims of Jesus. Since retiring, he has felt called to use his scientific background to show others that the Bible is believable from first verse to last. Before joining CMI, he gave presentations on the creation-evolution issue to the College and Career groups at two local churches and facilitated a multi-week discussion group on the topic at the church he attends. Dr Mason's hobbies include skiing (downhill and cross-country), gardening/landscaping, renovations, and spending time with his two grandchildren. He and his wife Rosemary have three children and reside just outside Lakefield, Ontario near their two granddaughters. Some Publications J.F. Project Plowshare, also known as Operation Plowshare, was the overall United States term for the development of techniques to use nuclear explosives for peaceful construction purposes. The phrase was coined in 1961, taken from Isaiah 2:3--5 ("And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more"). It was the U.S. portion of what are called Peaceful Nuclear Explosions (PNE). Successful demonstrations of non-combat uses for nuclear explosives include rock blasting, stimulation of tight gas, chemical element manufacture (test shot Anacostia resulted in Curium-250m being discovered), unlocking some of the mysteries of the so-called "r-Process" of stellar nucleosynthesis and probing the composition of the Earth's deep crust, creating reflection seismology Vibroseis data which has helped geologists and follow on mining company prospecting.Negative impacts from Project Plowshare's 27 nuclear projects including nuclear contamination led to the program's termination in 1977, due in large part to public opposition. These consequences included tritium contaminated water and the deposition of fallout from radioactive material being injected into the atmosphere before underground testing was mandated by treaty. Hurricane #Florence Floods Brunswick Nuclear Plant Under Water Spouts Detected
#Brunswick Nuclear power plant is in the bulls-eye today. The wind and waves have picked up considerably. Brunswick will likely be flooded before the eye arrives. Brunswick mark 1 boiling reactors are of the Fukushima Diechi GE Design. Seems like a bad place for Nuclear reactor as well only 20 feet above the sea and less than a mile from the coastline. A Cat 3 storm can push Brunswick to the limits. Major #floods have already occurred. Recent satellite imagery have detected water spouts offshore of Brunswick NPP. Tornado alerts will be ongoing. Hurricane Florence is still packing waves of 46 feet. So we can expect these Nucler power plants to be under 17 feet of water. What if the Building floats away or the roof flys off a nuclear power plant? Can the diesel gernerators function under 16 feet of water? Can you imagine having to run around outside the plant to try and prevent serous damage. There is a high fatality potential in this kind of storm. Basically Duke bought the remaining shell of a company, mostly for the paperwork to support their DGs. They don’t have a typical repair parts stream…they contract to get replacement parts on their own. Counterfeit, Suspect, Fraudulent Items. a no longer in operation machine manufacturer ( Nordberg) and then the third party parts supplier who no longer is in operation also. Now the parts are made fraudulently in China. I posed the question, well, why can’t you order them to replace all the dgs with new machines. Get a giant manufacture with large engineering services on their machines and the replacement parts traditional stream. He says it is impossible, the specific DGs are integral to the licensing of the plant. Even putting in new machines, it wouldn’t be the original quality. What bs! He said it would be cheaper building a new plant than ripping out an obsolete dg and installing an identical or better dg. If a dg fails in a way it can't be used again...it means the plant would have to permanently shutdown. He says that is why the industry has never changed out not even one dg in all of the history. the parts had an inadequate pedigree.They really have no idea where the parts came from and they are worried they come from a Chinese fraudulent parts sweat shop? November 28, 2016 (Persian calendar 1395/9/8) Majid Shahriari مجيد شهرياري (c. 1966 Zanjan – 29 November 2010 Tehran) was a nuclear engineer who worked with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. He specialized in neutron transport, a phenomenon that lies at the heart of nuclear chain reactions in reactors and bombs. According to The Guardian, he "had no known links to banned nuclear work". According to Al Jazeera he "was a quantum physicist and was not a political figure at all" and he "was not involved in Iran's nuclear programme". He was also one of the two Iranian members of the International Centre for Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science Applications in the Middle East, beside Masoud Alimohammadi, another assassinated scientist. He was also allegedly Iran's "top Stuxnet expert". According to Time magazine, Majid Shahriari was "the top scientist and senior manager of Iran's nuclear program". Some Iranian media reports said he taught at the Supreme National Defense University, which is run by the Iranian Army, according to the New York Times. Shahriari published dozens of esoteric conference reports and peer-reviewed articles on nuclear research. On 29 November 2010, unidentified assailants riding motorcycles launched separate bomb attacks, killing Shahriari and injuring nuclear scientist Fereydoon Abbasi, a professor at Shahid Beheshti University where Shahriari also taught. Dr. Abbasi's wife was also hurt. The killers had attached bombs to the professors' cars and detonated them from a distance. Iranian officials have variously blamed Israel and the United States for assassinating Shahriari. Saeed Jalili, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, was quoted as saying Western nations "exercise terrorism to liquidate Iran's nuclear scientists". Time magazine ran an article questioning whether this action was perpetrated by Mossad (Israel's external intelligence service). According to The Daily Telegraph (UK), Israel allegedly planned to conduct covert operations against Iran, including assassinations. Tehran nuclear site was officially renamed after him after his assassination.

Radiation Control at a Nuclear Reactor 1954 Chalk River Canada
This clip shows ways of controlling the spread of radiological contamination. Passing from zone to zone involved a good deal of body work, registering the levels on personal dosimeters by inserting them into a pad reader, on the way in changing clothing, collecting and calibrating instruments, assembling the materials needed for the job plan, on the way out carefully disrobing, pulling off each garment inside out to contain contaminants, washing down and bundling any equipment which had to be removed for repair so as to not leave a trail of contamination along the route to the shop. Many of these control ideas have evolved into the procedures used at today at the clean-up of contaminated sites such as the US Superfund Program under OSHA's Hazwoper worker protection regulation. This is clipped from the 1954 episode Hidden Power, from the On the Spot television series from the 1950s. The episode is a visit to the Chalk River NRX Canadian atomic energy plant, showing research in the peacetime application of nuclear energy. At the time of its construction it was Canada's most expensive science facility and the world's most powerful nuclear research reactor. NRX experienced one of the world's first major reactor accidents in December 1952 when the NRX reactor underwent a violent power excursion that destroyed the core of the reactor, causing some fuel melting. Unaccountably, the shut-off rods failed to fully descend into the core. A series of hydrogen gas explosions (or steam explosions) hurled the four-ton gasholder dome four feet through the air where it jammed in the superstructure. Thousands of curies of fission products were released into the atmosphere, and a million gallons of radioactively contaminated water had to be pumped out of the basement and "disposed of" in shallow trenches not far from the Ottawa River. The core of the NRX reactor could not be decontaminated; it had to be buried as radioactive waste. Young Jimmy Carter -- later U.S. President, then a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy -- was among the hundreds of Canadian and American servicemen who were ordered to participate in the NRX cleanup following the accident. Five years later, in 1958, several metallic uranium fuel rods in the nearby NRU reactor overheated and ruptured inside the reactor core. One of the damaged rods caught fire and was torn in two as it was being removed from the core by a robotic crane. As the remote-controlled crane passed overhead, carrying the larger portion of the damaged rod, a three-foot length of fiercely burning uranium fuel broke off and fell into a shallow maintenance pit. The burning fuel lay there, spreading deadly fission products and alpha-emitting particles throughout the reactor building. The ventilation system was jammed in the "open" position, thereby contaminating the accessible areas of the building as well as a sizable area downwind from the reactor site. A relay team of scientists and technicians eventually extinguished the fire by running past the maintenance pit at top speed wearing full protective gear, dumping buckets of wet sand on the burning uranium fuel. Over a thousand men were involved in the cleanup operations following these two accidents. More than 600 men were required for the NRU cleanup alone. Official AECL reports stress that very few of these men were over-exposed to radiation -- that is, most of the recorded radiation doses did not exceed the levels that were considered permissible for atomic workers at that time. The reports also imply that no adverse health effects were caused by the exposures received. However, no medical follow-up has ever been done to see whether the population of men involved exhibited a higher-than-normal incidence of cancer later in life. View this video on the Forging process! Open-die forging can produce forgings from a few pounds up to more than 150 tons. Called open-die because the metal is not confined laterally by impression dies during forging, this process progressively works the starting stock into the desired shape, most commonly between flat-faced dies. In practice, open-die forging comprises many process variations, permitting an extremely broad range of shapes and sizes to be produced. In fact, when design criteria dictate optimum structural integrity for a huge metal component, the sheer size capability of open-die forging makes it the clear process choice over non-forging alternatives. At the high end of the size range, open-die forgings are limited only by the size of the starting stock, namely, the largest ingot that can be cast. Seamless Rolled Ring Forging Seamless rolled ring forging is typically performed by punching a hole in a thick, round piece of metal (creating a donut shape), and then rolling and squeezing (or in some cases, pounding) the donut into a thin ring. Ring diameters can be anywhere from a few inches to 30 feet
