Health warning about the traditional practice of breast ironing of young girls
These young Cameroon schoolchildren are about the age when most girls are subjected to breast ironing. The aim is to break down the tissue in the breast before the girl reaches puberty when she is regarded by men as sexually available. The practice is regarded here almost like a contraceptive. Housewife Hortense Leundja has three daughters, all of whom have been subjected by her to breast ironing and she is willing to demonstrate how it is done. She says: "I put the stone to be warmed on the fire, I controlled the temperature so that it does not warm too much. Because, if I do not control, it can burn the child. But once, that even burned her. Thus I controlled and I massage her breasts. I massage like that." That same stone is used to crush and grind food for the family's dinner. Hortense Leundja says she has no regrets and feels vindicated because none of her daughters are pregnant. Rocksane Tomen, 18, is a third year medical student. She is ahead of most of her school friends because most Cameroonians obtain their Advance level certificate towards the age of 20 and go to the university at 21. Rocksane Tomen remembers the experience and has vowed she will not subject her children to the practice. She says: "When my mother ironed my breasts, it hurt me, it hurt me very much. But she had spoken to me and knowing that my mother cannot wish harm to me, she convinced me that breast ironing is good. Especially when the breast begins to grow prematurely because men pester women a lot. Even if you are a little girl, when a man sees that you already have breasts he begins to run after you to disturb (enforce sexual relations) with you. It is better to stop the breast growing until an (older) convenient age." Leundja is concerned that her daughters practice sexual abstinence and considered the practice as a way of ensuring her children didn't give up their studies. According to the NGO, the German Society for International Cooperation , the practice is widespread. The Society's advisor and spokesman Flavien Ndonko says: "In 2013, a study was conducted and approximately 12 percent of young girls undergo (breast ironing). That is about 1.200.000 girls victims of that practice." The Society's study claims the majority of these breast ironings were carried out when girls were eight years old and they were motivated by their mother's fear that their children might become pregnant. Breast ironing is considered necessary because sex education has been considered taboo. Now a campaign is underway to change all that. It's led by the "Network of Aunties Association" (Reseau National des Association de Tantines - RENATA), a network of more than 1000 women who all had their first child before the age of 17. Women like Jeanne Bella are determined to demonstrate contraceptives like the female condom, and contraceptives can be used to ensure against pregnancy. Cameroon's National Institute of Statistics, a government body, carried out a demographic survey in 2011. It reported that over a fifth of Cameroonian girls get pregnant before the age of 17 and a third of these girls abandon school as a result. Maureen Obi Mbu is Executive Secretary at RENATA. The group argues the practice has serious health consequences including tissue damage, burns, deformities and cysts. According to Maureen Obi Mbu: "Breast ironing has physical, psychological and moral consequences for the girl. Physically we can see that sometimes breasts are not normal any more, one breast is bigger than the other one. We have cases of the total disappearance of breasts. There are girls who get breast cancer because of this practice." There has been no official clinical study proving cancer has been caused by breast ironing. Jeanne Bella is now aged 27. The Little Mermaid - Documentary
Little Shiloh Pepin has sirenomelia or "mermaid syndrome", a rare birth condition where her legs have been fused together at birth. In most cases, persons born with sirenomelia die at birth, or get surgery to separate the fused legs. Shiloh has defeated the odds in making it to her eighth birthday. Sirenomelia, alternatively known as Mermaid Syndrome, is a very rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, giving them the appearance of a mermaid's tail. This condition is found in approximately one out of every 100,000 live births (about as rare as conjoined twins) and is usually fatal within a day or two of birth because of complications associated with abnormal kidney and urinary bladder development and function. More than half the cases of sirenomelia result in stillbirth and this condition is 100 times more likely to occur in identical twins than in single births or fraternal twins. It results from a failure of normal vascular supply from the lower aorta in utero. yt:quality=high, documentary, film, shock, awesome, amazing, interesting, viral, best,My Shocking Story,Extraordinary People,yt:crop=16:9,The Little Mermaid,Mermaid girl,Sirenomelia,Little Shiloh,Pepin Shiloh,Pepin, mermaid syndrome, mermaids, mermaid, mermaid miracles, mermaid caught on tape, mermaid documentary, water,yt:quality=high, documentary, film, shock, awesome, amazing, interesting, viral, best,My Shocking Story,Extraordinary People,yt:crop=16:9,The Little Mermaid,Mermaid girl,Sirenomelia,Little Shiloh,Pepin Shiloh,Pepin, mermaid syndrome, mermaids, mermaid, mermaid miracles, mermaid caught on tape, mermaid documentary, water

Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors. Double Heart Girl's Amazing Medical Recovery
It is a medical miracle for a 16-year-old girl who lived with an extra heart for years. She made a full recovery after the transplanted heart was removed in a unique operation. Hannah Clark is a reluctant star - she's facing the media because she's a medical miracle. She suffered heart failure when she was a baby, and at the age of two had a transplanted heart grafted onto her own one. Free from the stress of pumping blood, Hannah's own heart was able to rebuild itself. [Hannah Clark, Heart Transplant Patient]: (Female, English) "I enjoyed running even though I couldn't run. Swimming I enjoyed, and shopping." But Hannah had to take strong drugs to stop the body from rejecting the transplant, and four years ago she developed cancer. Doctors decided to remove the transplant - an operation which had never been performed before. In three years, Hannah has made a full recovery. [Paul Clark, Father of Heart Transplant Patient]: "We had to fight for it and sometimes we had to push her and say 'Come on Hannah, you can't give up, you have got to keep going', and this is where she is today." [Professor Magdi Yacoub, Heart Surgeon]: "I feel absolutely delighted, having seen her before in severe trouble on more than one occasion, it's an absolute delight. But that's what medicine is all about." Relief for her surgeon and her family. But this now healthy 16-year-old will never forget. [Hannah Clark, Heart Transplant Patient]: "I'm just glad the donor did what they did. I wouldn't be here. There must be a lot of trouble going through their life now, without their little girl." Hannah's star status is of course temporary - her recovery it seems is not.

After getting married, the couple bought a house and planned to travel the world. They did travel, but their plans changed when their first child was born in 2004. Max was 2 when they decided to have another child. The couple got the surprise of their lives when an ultrasound revealed not one but two babies. Charlotte and Chase were born October 18, 2006."* Ever since she was an infant, Charlotte Figi, 6, has Dravet Syndrome, a rare, severe form of epilepsy that causes seizures which severely limit her brain development. After a lot of searching, her parents found a solution to help stave off the seizures with the help of a certain kind of medical marijuana. Young Girl Using Cannabis Oil isn't Allowed to Attend School (Zellweger Syndrome)
Maddie is diagnosed with Zellweger syndrome and was not expected to live past her first year of life. Doctors prescribed cannabis oil to make her “comfortable until the end.” Maddie’s Mom reluctantly agreed to try the medicine in hopes of easing her daughter’s suffering. Maddie is now 4 years old and is learning to communicate through sign language. As I held her, unsure of what to expect, she reassured me with a kiss on the cheek before grinning ear to ear. Spanish/Nat The parents of a paralysed 15-year-old Italian girl say Cuban doctors have worked a medical miracle on their daughter. The teenager, Milvia, suffered severe brain damage following surgery six years ago. She is now receiving specialist care in Cuba as one of a growing number of foreigners flown there for affordable medical expertise and has made a startling recovery. The Julio Diaz Hospital lies south of Cuba's capital Havana, close to the city's international airport. It provides 400 hospital beds as well as a special ward reserved for foreign patients. It is here that the startling tale of 15-year-old Milvia Barratella has unfolded. The teenager had a brain tumour removed six years ago but remains severely brain damaged. She lost coordination, mobility and the ability to speak. Her distraught parents sought specialist care in the U-S but could not afford the monthly bill of 40-thousand U-S dollars. Cuba stepped in with a team of medical experts costing a fraction of the price. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The center, given the prestige it enjoys nationwide and internationally, is in large demand from overseas, from different countries, for the care that is offered in this centre." SUPER CAPTION: Eulogio Montoya, hospital director These special wards for foreign patients are part of a burgeoning industry in Cuba. The country's doctors enjoy a reputation of excellence worldwide and the income they generate helps finance Cuba's national health service. Milvia has been sent thanks to support from her hometown of Venice. Her progress has been described as a miracle by her parents but medics believe Milvia is still improving. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We have high hopes that we will improve results with this young girl. We want to give her more time here because daily she never fails to surprise us with something new." SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Idalmis Arrontes Milvia is now able to walk with the aid of parallel bars and is now able to feed and dress herself. Care is shared by a team of physiotherapists, neurological surgeons, and psychologists. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) "Well, in the first place, results are satisfactory. They are satisfactory for the doctors who are usually less optimistic." SUPER CAPTION: Mara Baratella, Milvia's mother SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Q: "What would you like to say? Send a greeting. What do you want me to say?" A: "Send them a greeting from Cuba to Italy and say I can't wait to go back." SUPER CAPTION: Mara Baratella and her daughter Milvia Cuban medicine is fast becoming a major selling point for travel to this communist island. Medical exports, fee-paying patients, and the hiring of trained medics to work abroad raised 40 (m) million U-S dollars last year. Plastic surgery and the treatment of vitiligo - an unsightly discolouration of the skin - are particularly sought after services. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) "It doesn't only exist in America it also exists in Cuba. There is a great deal of humanity here and willingness to help because the little girl with the will power she is getting, has a huge boost to her morale." SUPER CAPTION: Mara Baratella, Milvia's mother You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/829ce23ac5c0100a3fc18f872d34125f Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Young African Girl's Health is Restored from Complications in Hospital of Texas
Eight year old Hadiatu and her mother traveled thousands of miles from West Africa to receive surgery after complications due to the practice of female genital mutilation. The practice is common in her country but the UN has recently condemned these acts. Multiple infections and the constant leakage of urine were severely compromising her quality of life and health. The Woman's Hospital of Texas was asked to assist in this medical outreach and restore her if possible. Dr. Susan Hardwick-Smith and Dr. Eric Jones teamed up to provide the necessary skills in the OR. The story had a happy ending as they were able to surgically correct the problems and restore Hadiatu to health. Visit http://completewomenscarecenter.com for more information
