This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. You can start off by figuring out your annual budget for video marketing and explore what is possible. It could be a bunch of simple videos, a few highly produced videos with basic videos in-between, etc. Are you looking to limit your budget or testing the waters to see what’s working? I would suggest starting with many simple videos so you can get more traction through out the year. I understand if you need to get that first "About Us" video on your home page. If so, start with that and create a goal to build your campaign after. As you find whats working best you’ll begin to see the return on investment building through the year. Limit Your Lengths Limit your lengths of each video. 30 second videos with a single message can be powerful. 60 second videos are great. Even 2 minute videos can deliver phenomenal response. Once you venture into the 3+ minute land, you start to play with fire. The secret is to make sure longer videos are produced better with engaging stories. How to Set-Up Business Manager for Instagram Ads and Facebook Ads: https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1649590841944352 About the Video: Instagram Advertising is very similar to Facebook Advertising, you just have different options for the ads you can run and you reach the audience on Instagram as opposed to Facebook, Messenger, or the Audience Network. You can run Instagram Feed Ads and Instagram Story Ads, which perform and look similarly but need to be adjusted for ad size. We first start in the Facebook Ads Manager Power Editor screen. From here, you can Create new Instagram Ads campaigns and do everything you need to in order to get started. Next, we show you that you need a Facebook Business Page and you need to connect it to your Instagram Business Account. Your ads will obviously be run from your Instagram page but you need to connect it to your Facebook page and your Business Manager account too. The link above will help you get started with everything. After that, we talk about the importance of adding the Facebook Pixel (which is the same as the Instagram Pixel) to your website. It will go across your website so you can create retargeting audiences and track custom conversions. If you have a Shopify website for example, you can run Instagram Ads and track things like a new purchase, all sales, revenue, new accounts, and when people add products to their cart. Once you set-up custom conversions, you can optimize that for your advertising campaigns. Setting up Instagram and Facebook Advertising Audiences: You can easily go to the Asset Library and set-up audiences for your Instagram advertising campaigns. We set-up 3 different audiences that we are going to test for our campaigns. You can target a combination of lookalike audiences, custom audiences, and saved audiences that you create yourself. Instead of creating different audiences for each campaign, you can set them all up in your asset library and manage all of them. Setting up Your First Instagram Ads Campaign: We then go through how to set-up your first Instagram Advertising campaign. You start by clicking the Create Campaign button and we choose Conversions as our campaign goal. You can use the split test feature but we want to record a video separately to show you how that works. You can also set-up a campaign spending limit so you don't spend more than you want to on Instagram ads. After that, you can create your first Instagram Ad Set and Instagram Ad. Your ad sets is where you set your budgets and targeting. Facebook and Instagram ads makes it really easy to manage your budgets so you can avoid overspending. In addition, if you set-up audiences like we did in the previous step, you can easily manage who you are targeting at all times. We start by creating our first Ad Set with the first Audience we created targeting Instagram demographics, behaviors, and interests. There are so many options in terms of targeting. In addition to controlling budgeting and targeting, you can set your Instagram ad placements at the ad set level. We are going to be running Instagram ads in the newsfeed section and the stories section. When you are setting up Instagram Ads, you can use Carousel ads, image ads, video ads, and more. Advertising is the Dirty Profession, famous for snake oil salesmen and shysters, shilling things that nobody needs, creating this bankrupt consumerist culture. But what if I told you that you were unknowingly in advertising too? My own journey from human evolution and ecology into marketing has taught me that we are all in advertising—and that’s actually a good thing. Ethan Decker is an ecologist who took a left turn and ended up in advertising. He’s now VP of Insight & Strategy at The Integer Group, one of the largest retail, promotion & shopper marketing agencies in the world. He is a marketer, a researcher, a scientist, a manager, an editor, a storyteller, a performer, and an ecologist. He's done ethnographies in Tokyo and statistics in Matlab. He's helped sell cereal and women's clothes. He’s created Olympic advertising campaigns and new product lines. He's worked with some of the biggest marketers in the world (including P&G, Kellogg, and PepsiCo). Ethan has a BA in sociology and a PhD in urban ecology and human evolution, and he studied complex systems theory at the Santa Fe Institute. He’s been published in PloS ONE, Ann Rev Energy & Environment and other places. He’s competed in the Swing Dance US Open and the UPA Ultimate Frisbee Championships. Instead of asking that you invest money, guerrilla marketing suggests you invest time, energy, imagination and knowledge instead. It puts profits, not sales, as the main yardstick. And, it does it through one of the most powerful marketing weapons around--the telephone. The telephone is a remarkably effective follow-up weapon. Anyhow, no one ever said that guerrilla marketing is a piece of cake. E-mail ranks up there with the telephone, possibly even out outranking it. It's inexpensive. It's fast. It lets you prove that you really care. It helps strengthen your relationship. Lean upon your website as well. Instead of telling your whole story with other marketing, use that other marketing to direct people to your site. Then, use the site to give a lot of information and advance the sale to consummation. A key to online success is creating a brief and enticing e-mail that directs readers to a website that give enough information for a person to make an intelligent purchase decision. Guerrilla marketing preaches fervent follow-up, cooperation instead of competition, "you" marketing rather than "me" marketing, dialogues instead of monologues, counting relationships instead of counting sales, and aiming at individuals instead of groups. All guerrillas realize that the process of marketing is very much akin to the process of agriculture. Their marketing plans are the seeds they plant. Their marketing activities are the nourishment they give to each plant. Their profits are the harvest they reap. They know those profits don't come in a short time. But come they do if you start with a plan and commit to it. Guerrillas know they must seek profits from their current customers. They worship at the shrine of customer follow-up. They are world-class experts at getting their customers to expand the size of their purchases. Because the cost of selling to a brand-new customer is six times higher than selling to an existing customer, guerrilla marketers turn their gaze from strangers to friends. This reduces the cost of marketing while reinforcing the customer relationship. When your customers are confronted with their daily blizzard of junk mail and unwanted e-mail, your mailing piece won't be scrapped with the others and your e-mail won't be instantly deleted. After all, these folks know you, identify with you, trust you. So they'll be delighted to purchase--or at least check out--that new product or service you're offering. They'll always be inclined to buy from a company they've patronized. Guerrillas are able to think of additional products and services that can establish new sources of profits to them. They're constantly on the alert for strategic alliances--fusing marketing efforts with others in order to market aggressively while reducing marketing investment. The internet and your bookstore are teeming with a treasure trove of marketing tactics that can help you discover smart guerrilla marketing tactics. But learning about them is only half the battle. If you don't begin putting them into practice, you won't see the results these type of marketing efforts can have on your bottom line.
