As you know, in prehistory there were many animals that stood out because of their large size, there were in all species, insects, reptiles and mammals that exceeded by many times the size of their current species, likewise, the waters were also under the mastery of monstrous and giant creatures, and that is precisely what I will talk about here. Here I bring you the top 30 of the largest and most dangerous marine monsters of the first part of the prehistory.

10 WEIRDEST Aquatic Prehistoric Creatures

04:40
Prehistoric animals already look peculiar relative to the ones alive today, but you'd have thought that mother nature went through a few seriously drunken phases when conceiving the creatures in this video. Subscribe for more! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedSubscribe ◄ Stay updated and vote on new videos by liking our facebook! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedFacebook ◄ Get in touch or join the team: http://goo.gl/forms/2lOZyOeL3N SPOILER ALERT!!! A condensed list is below: ➢10. Dunkleosteus This genus included some of the largest armoured-jaw fishes that ever existed, with a bite force many time stronger than the T-rex ! They were one of the fiercest predators in the ocean and you wouldn't have thought it from the pictures, but they are thought to measure up to 10 meters long and 1000 kilos in weight. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/dunkleosteus10 ➢9. Anomalocaris Despite its rather laughable appearance, this creature is thought to have been a top predator during its time. Its name appropriately means 'Abnormal shrimp' and it is claimed to have reached up to 2 meters in length which was a gigantic size during the time when it existed. Its whisker like limbs were also covered with razor sharp teeth to grab prey. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/anomalocaris09 ➢8. Hallucigenia Named after its 'bizarre and dream-like qualities', this creature still perplexes scientists and is believed to have lived around 505 million years ago. It had 7-8 pairs of legs equipped with claws and it also had spikes on its back for unknown reasons. In case you're wondering whether you're looking at its head or backside, well... sorry, nobody can help you there, even zoologists are unsure. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/hallucigenia08 ➢7. Aegirocassis This genus lived 480 million years ago and is known by a single species called Aegirocassis benmoulai which was only found last year in Morocco. At just over seven feet in length it's pretty long and has helped to provide key evidence about the early evolution of arthropods. Its as amazing as it is weird, with modified legs, gills on its back, and it is considered the oceans first filter-feeding giant. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/aegirocassis ➢6. Helicoprion This shark-like fish had a strange lower jaw which has puzzled scientists for centuries. It was thought that its teeth formed a sort of 'tooth-whorl', spinning around a spiral-like jaw. However, recent studies have provided evidence to suggest that they form more of a circular saw inside the mouth, rotating as the jaw closes to slice through its prey. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/helicoprion07 ➢5. Tanystropheus I know what you're thinking - what the neck is that? It's basically the Giraffe of the middle triassic period, dating back to 232 million years ago. For the shrewd of you that noticed, that means that like a lot of creatures in this video it actually lived BEFORE the dinosaurs. It wasn't a fast swimmer so often walked along the seabed and used its long neck to get within range of prey without being noticed. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/tanystropheus06 ➢4. Leedsichthys Perhaps the largest bony fish that ever lived, this creature was even bigger than the megalodon! Whats especially weird is that despite its fearsome size, it was a harmless filter feeder rather than a hunter, much like the basking shark. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/leedsichthys ➢3. Stethacanthus This ancient genus of sharks lived around 360 million years ago and was relatively small. Still, its best known for that strange ironing board on its back. That dorsal fin is thought to frighten predators... but it probably just made them laugh. The uneven textures on its head and fin may also be a predator deterrent but it has also been suggested that these horny beasts could've used them in mating rituals... ouch? Credit: http://fur.ly/0/stethacanthus05 ➢2. Jaekelopterus This extinct species of sea scorpions was identified after a 390-million-year-old specimen was found in a Germany. They're believed to have had an estimated length of 2.5 meters, being one of the largest arthropods found on earth. Although dubbed a “sea scorpion,” they're actually are thought to have lived in freshwater rivers and lakes. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/jaekelopterus ➢1. Opabinia If an alien species has ever roamed the earth, this must have been it. It had surreal features such as a lobster-like tentacle equipped with a claw as well as five eyes and 30 flippers. The weird appendage is thought to have been used to feed the mouth under its head like aliens do in the movies. Credit: http://fur.ly/0/opabinia

5 Strangest Prehistoric Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed.

05:51
Life in the oceans is extremely amazing. Just 30% of the surface of our planet is mainland, so the rest, is a big mystery. It is said that we only know 5% of the ocean, nobody knows with certainty what kind of creatures have inhabited or even still inhabit the depths of the oceans. What we do know is that there were huge and terrible animals, true sea monsters that lived millions of years ago. But today, we're not going to talk to you about common animals that everyone knows about, but we're going to go further, because this time, we are going to talk about those strange prehistoric sea monsters, that sometime inhabited this world. SCARIEST Ancient Sea MONSTERS That Ever Lived!

Check out the most scary ancient sea monsters that ever lived! From the leviathan to the megalodon, this top 10 list of largest prehistoric sea creatures that roamed the oceans is terrifying! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "STRANGEST Artifacts Ever Discovered!" video here: https://youtu.be/gG0XGt3jFZA Watch our "SECRETS Casinos DON'T Want You To Find Out!" video here: https://youtu.be/hAoABuvzOZM Watch our "RAREST And Most EXPENSIVE Cars In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/MtCnWSqqilg 10. Liopleurodon Just imagine what it’s like to swim alongside a creature that’s many times your size!! Pretty intimidating but still nothing like these guys. The Liopleurodon was one of the largest sea monsters that ever lived. At about 80 feet long, it was the alpha predator in the shallow waters during the late Jurassic period, where it hunted crocodiles and giant fish. 9. Kerygmachela Kierkegaardi The K Kierkegaardi is a strange creature that lived about 540 million years ago, and recent discoveries of their fossils have led to a completely new understanding of how animals’ brains have developed!! 8. Dakosaurus Dakosaurus lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras about 145 million years ago. The species is often referred to as ‘Godzilla’ because of the deep shape of its skull, but it was more like a large crocodile that lived in the saltwater of the oceans. Growing up to 16 feet long, it had paddle shaped flippers to help propel itself through the water, as well as a fluke at the end of its tail to provide extra power. 7. Ichthyosaur Ichthyosaurs lived during the Triassic period until around 90 million years ago, when they mysteriously became extinct- about 25 million years before the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Meaning ‘fish lizards’, Ichthyosaurs are actually thought to have evolved from a land reptile that moved back into the water, but it’s not yet clear what its precise ancestry is. 6. The Tully Monster If you were asked to design the strangest animal you could, then I bet you wouldn’t come up with something as weird as this odd looking creature, called the Tully Monster. Fossil findings suggest that it lived in the shallow waters of the Eastern United States about 300 million years ago, with remains having been found in the Mazon Creek fossil beds in Illinois. 5. Kronosaurus The Kronosaurus was a short necked pliosaur that lived during the Cretaceous era, just over 100 million years ago. They grew to around 32 feet long, 9 feet of which was its huge head- big enough that it could fit an entire human inside it! Remains have been found in Australia and Colombia, where it would have been the alpha predator of its time. 4. Anomalocaridids If you’re squeamish about creepy crawlies, then this next ancient sea monster is probably going to be your least favourite of all. Anomalocaridids were shrimp-like creatures that, for millions of years, were the largest predators in the oceans. They had soft jointed bodies, and spiny limbs to allow them to catch small prey like worms. 3. Tylosaurus The Tylosaurus- a name which means “knob lizard”, was one of the largest mosasaurs to ever live. They swam in the oceans during the Cretaceous era, about 70 million years ago, and grew to up to 50 feet long. They were different to earlier species of mosasaur that propelled themselves through the water with flippers and, instead, had giant tails that would do all of the work. 2. Luskhan Itilensis The Luskhan Itilensis is a new species of Pliosaur that was only recently identified in 2017 from fossils found 15 years earlier in the Volga river in Russia. Rather than being dinosaurs, they were actually distant relatives of turtles- with 4 large flippers, big heads, powerful jaws, and very sharp teeth. 1. Leedsichthys Growing up to 55 feet long, the Leedsichthys is thought to be the largest fish that has ever lived. (So this answer was actually pretty tricky!!) It’s difficult to know much about it, though, because only fragments of this giant creature have ever been found. At one point is was believed to be twice the size, but even the recent reduction in estimates based on new finds makes it bigger than today’s whale sharks, and by far the biggest bony fish that’s ever been discovered. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

LARGEST Prehistoric Sea Monsters !

08:49
From gigantic marine reptiles; to a whale that challenged Megalodon Here are 14 of the largest prehistoric sea monsters Subscribe to Epic Wildlife http://goo.gl/6rzs5u Let's Connect -- http://www.epicadamwildlife.com/ -- http://www.facebook.com/epicadamwildlife -- http://www.twitter.com/epicwildlife -- http://gplus.to/epicwildlife Liopleurodon Identified as pliosaurs, these carnivorous marine reptiles lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic. In its time, it would have been an apex predators in the waters that covered present day Europe. Growing more than 20 feet long, the animal’s skull accounted for about one-fifth of that length. Researchers think that might account for the beast being able to use its nostrils to detect the source of certain smells in its environment. That would have been a useful trait, since the critter seemed capable of propelling itself at high speeds in the water -- suggesting that it could have been an ambush predator. Tylosaurus This species of Mosasaur was closely related to present day day snakes and monitor lizards. The large marine lizards could reach lengths of close to 50 feet, and was distinguished by its long, cylindrical snout. Experts speculate that it may have been used for purposes of self-defense and/or combat to stun prey. Its long, eel-like body was built for speed and agility. The animal could cruise at a steady rate … then shoot forward in a quick burst of speed to overtake prey. It generally favored a wide range of prey, from marine reptiles to sharks to flightless birds. They were dominant predators in the waters of North America during the Late Cretaceous, around 75 million years ago. Mosasaurus (moss-uh-sore-us) Here’s a critter whose name has become a lot more familiar in recent years. The huge carnivorous marine lizard lived during the Late Cretaceous, around 66 million years ago. Growing nearly 60 feet long, the beasts could weigh an estimated 30,000 pounds! Their massive, conical teeth clamped into prey that ranged from sharks to dinosaurs of the time. Their fossils have been found across much of the globe … with experts saying they could exist in saltwater or freshwater habitats. Did you know these creatures are thought to be related to present-day lizards like the Komodo dragon? Megalodon (thumb) Our number one scary critter is just ahead … First, here’s an Honorable Mention. And we have a name that is no doubt synonymous with ‘prehistoric deep sea predator’. Megalodon has to be included on this kind of list. But the humongous ancient fish gets a fair amount of publicity from Epic Wildlife, so we don’t want to overexpose the beast. Still, it must be mentioned that Megalodon was about as long as a school bus, with lengths estimated to exceed some 60 feet. We’re not sure if the beast in the picture is meant to be Megalodon, of if it’s meant to represent a kayaker’s worst nightmare. While the animal had jaws more than 6.5 feet across, it couldn’t necessarily swallow one of those vessels whole. But it could have devoured a human in one bite. And researchers say they had one of the most powerful bite forces of all time. In their time, they were thought to have hunted down whales. They resembled a much larger version of today’s great white shark, and were wide ranging creatures … their fossils have been found around the world. Livyatan Melvilli Recall that we just mentioned how Megalodon hunted whales when it swam the oceans. This is one of the whales it could have encountered millions of years ago. And it would have provided a big challenge for that big shark. Livyatan Melvilli was named for Leviathan, the sea monster in the Bible … and for Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick. The marine mammals were similar in size to today's sperm whales, measuring close to 60 feet long. Maybe more impressive was the size of their teeth … at 14 inches long, they’re among the largest teeth of any animal yet discovered. Along with Megalodon, it was an apex predator that roamed the same waters and hunted the same prey as its rival -- which included other whales. Which one would win a battle of these prehistoric super predators?

Prehistoric Sea Creatures

04:25
➤ Please subscribe: http://goo.gl/au5rFL Ancient Sea Monsters Prehistoric Sea Creatures If you think our oceans are full of horrible and terrifying creatures today, then you should build a time machine and check out what the oceans held in prehistoric times. At that point in history, the oceans were teeming with the most frightening killing machines of all time. While we might blanch at the thought of great white sharks today, those creatures would've been the least horrifying ones in the bunch back then. Let's meet of a few of these ancient terrors, shall we? 1. Deinosuchus While technically these monsters didn't hang out in oceans, I included Deinosuchus on this list because it was an absolutely insane beast. This giant crocodile was so large that it ate dinosaurs for breakfast. At 40 feet long, the Deinosuchus was nearly as big as the Tyrannosaurus. Just imagine seeing a battle between those two. 2. Mosasaurus Want to guess what modern creature the Mosasaurus is most closely related to? The Komodo dragon. This massive killing machine actually had two sets of jaws, and it was 60 feet long. For a demonstration of the deadliness of this beast, you can check one out in the latest Jurassic Park movie. You'll know which one it is when you see it. 3. Anomalocaridid Even though they were on the smaller side compared to most of the creatures on this list, the Anomalocaridid was a fearsome predator. It sat at the top of the oceanic food chain for millions of years before more complex predators evolved. 4. Jaekelopterus Jaekelopterus was a sea scorpion of the most terrifying variety. In Earth's early life, these massive crustaceans stomped on everything in their path. As they stood at around nine feet tall, that doesn't really come as a shock. 5. Xiphactinus About 85 million years ago, the North American continent was split into three large islands. Connecting them all was a huge inland sea. It was in this sea that Xiphactinus reigned supreme. 6. Edestus The great white shark can't even hold a candle to the deadly wrath of the Edestus. This prehistoric shark was a killing machine. Modern estimates put its length at around 22 feet. Their razor-sharp teeth were what sealed the scary deal. 7. Helicoprion I know this shark looks like the product of a bad Photoshop job, but according to researchers, this is how Helicoprion actually looked. Freaky, right? Just be thankful that you weren't one of the poor fish that wandered too close to that jaw. 8. Dunkleosteus While many horrifying creatures of the deep had sharp teeth to do their bidding, Dunkleosteus just had one massive tooth. This beast used its mouth like a guillotine when it was hunting. 9. Basilosaurus Even though it has "saurus" in its name, the Basilosaurus wasn't actually a lizard. According to researchers, the monster was actually a type of whale...and it was massive. Estimates gleaned from fossil evidence put the Basilosaurus' length at around 60 feet. It likely snacked on massive sharks. You know what? I think I'm going to cancel my plans to build a time machine. I'd rather leave the past in the past.

5 Prehistoric Sea Monsters That Could Eat Megalodons.

05:03
The megalodon is considered to be the largest shark that ever inhabited the earth. But among the hundreds of prehistoric predators that existed, would there be any predators that could have confronted it? In a hypothetical scenario, where the most ruthless marine beasts would have coincided in the same era of the megalodon, who of all these, would be more adapted to devour this monstrous shark? Up next, we will review the most suitable candidates. My Facebook. http://bit.ly/2fFRQya Music: Creative Commons Attribution (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

STRANGE Prehistoric Creatures That Still Exist

From ancient sharks and reptiles to insects that refused to leave; These are 24 STRANGE Prehistoric Creatures That Still Exist Subscribe to Epic Wildlife http://goo.gl/6rzs5u Let's Connect -- http://www.epicadamwildlife.com/ -- http://www.facebook.com/epicadamwildlife -- http://www.twitter.com/epicwildlife -- http://gplus.to/epicwildlife Lampreys Although they have an eel-like appearance, these creatures are actually jawless fish. And they’ve got one of the most frightening mouths in the entire animal kingdom. The orifice has a funnel shape that contains sharp teeth used to bore into the flesh of their prey to suck out the blood … but only certain species engage in that behavior. Their fossils have been dated back around 360 million years … and they seem have evolved very little in that time. Sea Sponge Researchers find it difficult to calculate just how long sea sponges have been around. But the oldest fossil of one of these creatures was actually discovered in a rock … that was around 750-million years old. Horseshoe Crab These arthropods managed to outlast the dinosaurs. Experts have dated these arthropods back to some 450 million years ago, and they’re pretty much unchanged since then. The strange-looking creatures have a hard carapace that protects their body. And while they resemble crustaceans, they belong to a different subphylum. Did you know that these critters have a total of 10 eyes? Platypus We mentioned earlier that the Echidna was one of only two mammalian species that lay eggs … Now here’s the other one. As we said earlier the two animals are thought to have split off from a common ancestor around 50 million years ago. But researchers say fossil evidence of that common ancestor could date back around 110 million years. Australian Ghost Shark Distantly related to sharks and rays, these animals belong to a branch of cartilaginous (cart-ill-ahg-in-us) fish called chimeras (KIH-meras). When scientists mapped the creature’s genome, it revealed DNA that’s gone basically unchanged for almost 420 million years. Also known as Elephant sharks, they are now considered to be the slowest-evolving vertebrates known to date. Alligator Snapping Turtle This looks like it could be a dinosaur emerging from a swamp, kind of like something you’d see in one of the Jurassic Park movies. But the creature in the picture does exist in real life, although it’s not as big as it seems to appear. That’s not to say the Alligator Snapping Turtle is small, though. Weighing more than 175 pounds, they’re one of the world’s heaviest freshwater turtles … that’s with a carapace that can exceed 30 inches. Some experts estimate their history goes back more than 150 million years. Coelacanth (SEE-luh-kanth) It was once believed that these rare fish went extinct about 65 million years ago. But in 1938 they were re-discovered off the coast of South Africa, and it turned out this animal was even more durable than originally thought. Experts think they evolved into their current form around 400 million years ago. Ctenophores (Jellyfish) Known as ctenophores (steni-fores), these animals showed up some 700 million years ago. They propel their gelatinous bodies through the water using rows of cilia, or combs. Biologists claim these are the oldest known animals, which means humans could be descended from these things. Hope we enjoy the same longevity as this so called living fossil!

10 Terrifying Prehistoric Creatures That You'll Be Glad Are Extinct

10 Terrifying Prehistoric Creatures That You'll Be Glad Are Extinct ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Everyone is familiar with the dinosaurs and how they lived long ago on our planet. But there were other creatures who existed and some even long before the dinosaurs. There were even creatures who ate other dinosaurs as they started to appear. From giant and scary cousins of millipedes to creatures so bizarre that it’s hard to believe they even existed, we take a look at 10 Terrifying Prehistoric Creatures That Actually Existed. 10. Jaekelopterus rhenaniae – This creature was a giant predator and belong to a group of now extinct sea scorpions called Eurypterids. They were some of the largest arthropods that ever lived with some fossils showing the Jaekelopterus could reach up to 8 feet long. 9. Helicoprion – It’s interesting to see how far evolution has come. For example, if we look at today’s sharks, and the sharks that existed during prehistoric times, you would think you were on a different planet. 8. Gigantopithecus – This was the largest ape which once roamed the early prehistoric forests and jungles. Some fossils found indicate that this giant-sized ape stood as high as 10 feet tall and weighed as much as 1,300 pounds. It is believed that it existed between 9 million and even as recently as 100,000 years ago. 7. Arthropleura was an herbivorous arthropod that lived in what is now northeastern North America and Scotland around 315 to 299 million years ago, during the late Carboniferous Period. And what made this creature terrifying was its size, its appearance, and how fast it could move. Fossilized footprints from Arthropleura have been found in many places. 6. Livyatan melvillei is the name of a prehistoric whale inspired by the biblical sea monster Leviathan. It existed around 10 million years ago. It was a member of a group of hyper-predatory macro raptorial sperm whales or raptorial sperm whales and was likely an apex predator preying on whales, seals, and anything else unfortunate to get in front of its mouthful of 14-inch-long enamel coated teeth. 5. Smilodon – Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats. Smilodon was more robustly built than any extant cat, with particularly well-developed forelimbs and exceptionally long upper canine teeth. 4. Deinosuchus - is an extinct genus related to the alligator that lived 80 to 73 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. Its name means ‘terrible crocodile’ and that is exactly what it was. The research was done when fossilized feces and oddly bitten bones of dinosaurs were found next to the fossils of this living creature. 3. Quetzalcoatlus is a pterosaur which lived approximately 70 million to 65 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period. But these creatures were not like the Pterodactyl. They were more like a Giraffe that walked on all 4 limbs but had wings or webs between the legs. 2. Titanoboa is an extinct genus of snakes and whose name means ‘titanic boa’. Fossils of this massive boa have been found that date back 60 million years ago. A fossil was found in Columbia that was so large that is stunned scientists and forced them to rethink the nature of prehistoric life. 1. T-Rex – What can be said about the mighty Tyrannosaurs Rex that hasn’t already been said. Tyrannosaurus Rex, or T-Rex for short was one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs. Its name means ‘King of the Tyrant Lizards’.

3 Prehistoric Sea Monsters Similar To The Megalodon.

04:07
In prehistoric times, many animals, due to their great size, strength and voracity, managed to dominate other species. In the case of the ocean, one of the animals that was dominant was the Megalodon, a huge shark similar to the current white shark, but larger.   However, despite their fearsome characteristics, it is believed that some creatures that lived in prehistory were just as terrifying and even stronger and more powerful. In this video we're going to introduce you to some terrible sea monsters, which deserve the same attention as the megalodon because of their fearsome characteristics. The ancient prehistoric sea monster that had armour for skin. We take a look at the incredible sea monster that had armour for skin. Dunkleosteus was a fearsome predator. Dunkleosteus is a fish which lived approximately 380 to 360 million years ago during the Late Devonian Period. This creature would have been one of the most ferocious creatures of all time. It was probably one of the largest fishes of its time, being 30 feet long and weighing in excess of 3 tons. Thank you for watching! Thank you to CO.AG for the background music!

Top 5 Deadliest Prehistoric Sea Creatures

07:08
5. Dunkleosteus -This prehistoric fish is what you get when you mix a huge fish and a tank. -This 20 foot or 6 meter armored meat eater, weighed in at 1 ton. -Being one of the first jawed animals the Dunkleosteus could crush predators with it’s massive bite. -It is estimated that the Dunkleosteus had a bite that produced 8000 lbs per square inch. -The bone armor on the Dunkleosteus gave it an unfair advantage against other creatures of the sea. -The bone was so strong other creatures, of the time, couldn’t break through it -The teeth were not really teeth at all but just an extension of the jaw with a sharp part for chomping into prey. -The jaw had 2 layers that could be be opened up allowing the bit to be enormous and protected -Around the eyes of the Dunkleosteus was 4 circular bone pieces to protect the eye from damage -based on evidence of skull structure they could have potentially been able to open their mouth and suck in food in 1/50 of a second, just think of them as a high speed vacuum, underwater, that crushes down on anything that goes in their mouth at record speed 4. Kronosaurus -This sea creature was named after the Greek titan Cronus. It’s been many years since they roamed the waters of earth, 98 million years to be exact. The Kronosaurus measured 34 feet or 10.5 meters in length and weighed up to 11 metric tons. -They had a long snout and head with some estimating 9 feet or 3 meters in length as well as four flippers attached to a large rib cage. The large rib cage provided extra strength likely making them fast agile swimmers. -The teeth of the Kronosaurus lack carinae or cutting edges and are all conical shaped, like a human’s canines, measured 3 - 8 inches or 7 to 30 cm long . -Kronosaurus fossils have been found in Australia as well as in Colombia. In 1977 a Colombian farmer turned over an enormous stone while working his field to find what he thought looked like a fossil. Turns out he found what is the best preserved fossils of the Kronosaurus. 3. Helicoprion -The Helicoprion is a shark like fish that went extinct 250 million years ago. They are known for their spiral tooth structure or tooth-whorl as it’s called. -The tooth whorl measured 18 inches or 45 cm in length but scientists are unsure if the teeth when deep into the throat of the fish or it was primarily an external feature. If it was deep in the throat it would suggest their diet consisted of softer creatures like jellyfish but the fact that the teeth are serrated the Helicoprion was a carnivore. -The largest specimen of Helicoprion measured 24.6 feet or 7.5 meters in length but fossil specimens suggest their average size was half of that. 2. Mosasaurus -The Mosasaurus is an extinct carnivorous aquatic lizard that lived over 66 million years ago. -This massive beasts of the sea lived in north america and western europe during their days on earth. -They measured 56 feet or 17 meters long, had a strong robust skull, and paddle like flippers, much like a turtle does. Their weapon of choice for catching prey were their massive conical teeth. -The mosasaurus was also known for snatching prehistoric birds out of the air for a tasty treat. -The tail had a had a large fluke like some sharks have that provided strong propulsion through the ocean waters 1. Megalodon -Most people have heard of it, the megalodon is a gigantic prehistoric shark that you’d never want to encounter in the ocean. While many believe they existed during the same time as dinosaurs, this simply isn’t the case. There is around 40 million years between the existence of the two. The megalodon dominated ocean waters during the Cenozoic Era which was 28 - 1.5 million years ago. -The megalodon measured up to 60 feet or 18 meters in length and weighed up to 60 tons, in comparison the biggest great white shark is only 23 feet or 7 meters in length and weighs 3.5 tons. This makes the megalodon 3 times as long and 20 times as heavy, the megalodon would eat great white sharks for breakfast. -Sharks bones are made of cartilage, which doesn’t fossilize easily, so the only remains of the megalodon were their teeth. While just having the teeth scientists have pieced together the rough size of these creatures and there have been bones found of other marine mammals like whales with bite marks that match the megalodon's teeth size. TOP 10 Terrifying PREHISTORIC SEA MONSTERS

Here are ten of the largest, most fearsome sea monsters ever to prowl the oceans. Dakosaurus was first discovered in Germany and, with its odd reptilian-yet-fishy body, was one of the top predators in the sea during the Jurassic period.Fossil remains have been found across a very widespread distribution, turning up everywhere from England to Russia to Argentina. Though it is commonly compared to modern crocs, Dakosaurus could reach a length of 16 feet (5m). Its unique teeth have led scientists to consider it an apex predator during its reign of terror. Tylosaurus was a species of Mosasaur. It was enormous, reaching more than 50 feet (15m) in length. The tylosaurus was a meat eater with a very diverse diet. Stomach remains show signs of fish, sharks, smaller mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and even some flightless birds. They lived during the late Cretaceous in the seas that covered North America, where they sat firmly atop the marine food chain for several million years. Only recently discovered, T. saurophagis was the size of a school bus, reaching nearly 30 feet (9m) long. It is an early species of ichthyosaur that lived during the Triassic period, 244 million years ago. Because they were alive shortly after the Permian extinction (Earth’s largest mass extinction, when 95% of marine life is thought to have been wiped out), its discovery is giving scientists new insights into the quick recovery of the ecosystem. While Tanystropheus was not strictly marine, its diet was mainly fish and scientists think it spent most of its time in the water. Tanystropheus was a reptile that could reach 20 feet (6m) long, and it is thought to have been alive during the Triassic period nearly 215 million years ago. Liopleurodon was a marine reptile measuring in at more than 20 (6m) feet in length. It mostly lived in the seas that covered Europe during the Jurassic period, and it was one of the top predators around. Its jaws alone are believed to have been over 10 feet long – roughly the distance from the floor to the ceiling. With teeth that big, it’s easy to see why Liopleurodon dominated the food chain. If the Liopleurodon was huge, than Mosasaurus was colossal.Fossil evidence suggests that Mosasaurus could reach as much as 50 feet (15m) in length, making it one of the largest marine predators of the Cretaceous period. Mosasaurus’s head was like that of a crocodile, lined with hundreds of razor sharp teeth which could kill even the most well-armored enemies. One of the largest predators in marine history and one of the largest sharks ever recorded, Megalodons were as terrifying as they came.Megalodons prowled the depths during the Cenozoic Era, 28 – 1.5 million years ago, and were a much bigger version of the great white shark, an apex predator of today’s oceans. But while our great whites only reach a maximum length of 20 feet (6m), Megolodons could grow to 65 feet in length (20m) – longer than a school bus!
