The film industry today | Frank Smith | TEDxChapmanU

12:31
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The ways that people are consuming films has changed radically especially over the last decade, but has the Hollywood business model kept pace? Frank Smith shares his ideas on the nature of change in the movie industry and its value in a personal sense and a business dynamic. Frank Smith is chief operating officer of Anschutz Film Group (AFG) and Walden Media. Smith has been with AFG since 2003, but currently oversees all aspects of AFG's operations (development, physical production, publishing, marketing and outreach, finance, legal and business affairs). He also works directly with The Anschutz Corporation on strategic planning and general operational issues. During his tenure with AFG, Smith has been lead counsel overseeing large budget motion picture franchise projects, co-production finance and distribution deals with major studios, as well as structuring foreign corporations for multijurisdictional film production tax incentives. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

All Hollywood VFX Removed! What Movies Really Look Like

03:25
It used to be that what you saw on a movie set would pretty much be what you saw in the final movie. If you wanted to have a mountain in the background, you'd have to go to one. However with modern technology, CGI has made it possible to have that mountain in the background without even leaving your home. Just whip up a green screen and you're good to go! This advancement in technology has meant for some big differences between what is filmed and what we see in the final movie. Here are some Hollywood movies without the VFX applied! Enjoy :) Read more here: www.famefocus.com Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/focusfame

Los Angeles: Hollywood Universal Studiofahrt Studio Tour film studio and theme park

10:09
Universal Studios Hollywood is a film studio and theme park in the Universal City community of the San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California, United States. It is one of the oldest and most famous Hollywood film studios still in use. Its official marketing headline is "The Entertainment Capital of LA". It was initially created to offer tours of the real Universal Studios sets and is the first of many full-fledged Universal Studios Theme Parks located across the world. Woody Woodpecker is the mascot for Universal Studios Hollywood. Outside the theme park, a new, all-digital facility near the Universal Studios backlot was built in an effort to merge all of NBCUniversal's West Coast operations into one area. As a result, the current home for KNBC, KVEA and NBC News with Telemundo Los Angeles Bureaus with new digital facility is on the Universal lot formerly occupied by Technicolor SA. Universal City includes hotels Universal Hilton & Towers, the Sheraton Universal Hotel, the multi-screen Globe Theatre, often used for banquets and receptions and Universal CityWalk, which offers a collection of shops and restaurants. In 2013, the park hosted 6,148,000 guests, placing it 17th in the world and 9th among North American parks. Source: Wikipedia

How many stars surround it? Why are they there? Or what's with the Walt Disney´s castle? Why is the boy fishing on the Dreamworks' logo? Are you intrigued already? Hollywood Studio System and Star System in film history: actors then and now

05:06
A long time ago, Hollywood movie studios developed a method to hire actors for a long-term period, with the goal of guaranteeing success for their movies, called the Star System, those contracts were huge and complex, ending up controlling the actor’s life. And how did it work? Well, let’s check the background first, in the 20s sound was introduced to film, and the industry was booming. The Patent War against Edison encouraged the producers to move to California, which gave birth to Hollywood, a place where they intended to produce films in high scale and develop a production standard pipeline. That pipeline was created by the owners of the Big Six companies: Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Universal Studios and the disappeared RKO. This also inspired on the Broadway method to develop actors in theater in the 19th century, and was named the Studio System. It had a lot of success and kicked off the Golden Age of Hollywood, it was based on the principles of business efficiency, economic rationalization and hiring employees for a long-term period under exclusivity contracts. If an actor was signed, it meant that he or she was introduced to the Star System, which meant changing his or her life. Examples here are actors like Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and Rock Hudson. After an actor was hired, the studio crew began to work with the actor to develop them into true celebrities. The intention was to spread an idealized image of the actor to the audience. Back then, a movie success depended on the popularity of the cast much more than on the story itself, for that reason, studios wanted to have a cast with demigod fame in their movies, to use them as the primary tool to promote the film. This is when names of actors started appearing prominently on posters. Florence Lawrence was the first actress signed for that purpose and audiences began to flock cinemas to see her. Companies used to come up with background, origin stories for their stars, and even changing their names, like the case of Michael Landon, born as Eugene Orwitz, and Norma Jeane Baker was renamed to Marilyn Monroe. The company monitored the actor’s life and public behavior to keep the preferred reputation. Women were expected to behave like ladies and have a neat appearance with stylish clothes; men had to act like gentlemen in public spaces. Also, the studios arranged sham dates between single celebrities, and then gossip columns and tabloids were tipped off about it, so a lot of photographers went there to capture the romantic moment. It was free advertising! All this because the audience didn’t use to expect a great story on the screen, they just wanted to watch their stars reflecting their reputation in their movie role. For example, Joan Crawford often played roles of hardworking young women who found romance and success, so her public life had to reflect that too. Same with Michael Landon, his roles as Joe Cartwright in Bonanza and Charles Ingalls in Little House in the Prairie had something in common, it’s about a good-natured family countryman, his community and his noble job, so the actor’s lifestyle should fit into that. Another significant example was Monroe and her roles as a femme fatale. Same with Greta Garbo, Marlon Brando. We can spend hours showing examples. Charlie Sheen comes to my mind when we talk about actors which behavior reflects their roles, haha! The case of Robert Downey Jr. and his Ironman role is an excellent example of that in this years. If an actor failed against a morality clause and was caught on drug use, divorce, adultery, or drinking problems (hello again Charlie Sheen); the companies used to fix the problem paying hush money to the witnesses and promising future exclusive stories to the gossip journalists. Casting put more emphasis on their image rather than their acting skills. The contract included acting, singing and dancing lessons, and after a few years, studios had shaped a team of triple-A actors working exclusively for that studio. Truth be told, the Hollywood industry encouraged the creation of the film school concept along the US, and the filmmaking industry burst thanks to that, making the Star System a key episode in film history on times where important classic movies were filmed. ... Olivia de Havilland.... __________ Here at Explainosphere, we like explaining things. As curious and eccentric as they may seem, we believe there is always someone, somewhere, trying to figure out how things work. If we answered your question about the Hollywood's Star System, please leave us a message in the comments. Music: bensound.com

5 Stories Behind Famous Hollywood Studios Logos!

04:23
If you are a fan of films, then you must have seen some logos that have left you wondering, ‘What’s the story behind that?’ Let me refresh your memory: the boy on the moon in the DreamWorks logo, the mountain in the Paramount logo and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lion. You’re wondering comes to an end today. At Top 5’s finest, we delve into these 5 Stories Behind Famous Hollywood Studio Logos! Ready? Well, lets begin! 1. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer: Leo The Lion Leo the lion on MGM has come a long way to be who we know him today. He was designed in 1924 for Samuel Goldwyn’s Picture Corporation in 1924. When Goldwyn merged with Metro Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer pictures, the newly formed MGM retained the logo. The first Lion, Slats, graced the opening of MGM’s silent films in 1924 to 1958. Jackie was the next MGM lion and his growl-roar-growl sequence as played over the phonograph could be heard by the audience. He was also the first lion to appear in Technicolor in 1932. Tanner was the next lion, and was probably the most famous lion of MGM. And that... is all she wrote. 2. DreamWorks: Boy on the Moon Let’s start with what that SKG at the bottom of the DreamWorks logo means. In 1994, Steven Spielberg, Disney Studio chairman, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and record producer, David Geffen, got together to find a new studio called DreamWorks. There was a lot of push and pull between the three before the logo currently used was settled on. Spielberg wanted the logo for DreamWorks to be reminiscent of Hollywood’s golden age. The logo was to be a computer-generated image of a man in the moon fishing. Dennis Muren, the Visual Effects Supervisor of Industrial Light and Magic who had worked with Spielberg on many of his films suggested a hand-painted logo. Robert Hunt, which is Muren’s friend would paint the logo. Hunt then sent an alternative version of the logo that showed a boy on a crescent moon fishing. And that is now the logo that you see in all Dreamworks films. 3. 20th Century Fox: The Searchlight Logo The 20th Century Fox Film Corporation came about in 1935 when Twentieth Century Pictures and Fox Film company merged. Landscape artist, Emil Kosa Jr., is credited with creating the original twentieth century pictures. If you are wondering who Kosa was, he was famous for his matte painting for the statue of Liberty that is showed at the end of the 1968 movie, Planet of the Ape and many other films. After the merger, Kosa replaced ‘Pictures Inc.’ with Fox to make the current logo. Neat huh? 4. Paramount: The Majestic Mountain The Paramount Majestic Mountains logo was first drawn as a doodle by W.W. Hodkinson during a meeting with Adolph Zukor, who was one of the founders of Famous Players FAILM Company that eventually became paramount. It was based on the Ben Lomond Mountain from his childhood in Utah. The first logo was used in 1914 and it is now the oldest surviving logo in Hollywood. The original logo has 24 stars which symbolized paramount’s then 25 contracted movies stars. It’s now 22 stars. It beats me why those stars were reduced though.... Im guessing that it’s a tough business out there. 5. Warner Bros.: The WB Shield Warner Bros. has had quite some history. And yes, it is legally Bros. not brothers. It went through 11 logos for it to settle on the one currently in use. The company was started by four Jewish brothers who emigrated from Poland: Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner. At the start, Warner Bros. had trouble attracting top talent. In 1925, after Sam’s urging, Warner Bros. made the first feature-length “talking pictures”. Harry famously said, “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” and that got the ball rolling for the studio to make Warner Bro’s famous. Many of the most iconic plane and airport scenes were filmed in the same place — Air Hollywood, the LA production studio entirely dedicated to aviation. How the Catholic Church censored Hollywood's Golden Age

06:00
For decades Hollywood studios needed to follow a strict set of moral guidelines if they wanted their movies to get made. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO From 1934 to 1954 every Hollywood movie needed to follow a strict set of guidelines laid out by the Catholic church. They included such things as barring excessive drinking, on screen nudity, and even sexual relationships between races. Enforcement was overseen by the Production Code administration, which was led by Joseph Breen. In order to ensure that the production code was followed the Catholic Church founded the Legion of Decency, a group with millions of members that threatened to boycott any movie that didn’t adhere to the guidelines. For decades every line of dialogue needed to be approved by Breen and his administration, making him one of the most powerful people in the history of cinema. History of: Universal Studios Hollywood Backlot (Universal City) Los Angeles, California

09:29
100 Years of Universal: The Lot (10 minutes): A behind-the-scenes look at the movie magic created on the famous Universal Studios lot. On March 15, 1915, Carl Laemmle officially opened the gates of Universal City, the world’s first self-contained community dedicated to making movies. According to eyewitness accounts, over 15,000 people were present for Universal City’s opening day ceremonies. At the time of Universal City’s opening, the new municipality had nearly 500 residents. Among them were 75 Indians who lived in tepees on the backlot, western riders, movie “soldiers” and workmen. Although the studio officially opened in 1915, film production on the lot began in 1914. Damon and Pythias, co-starring William Worthington and Herbert Rowlinson, was the first picture completed at Universal City. As movie production at Universal City increased, a steady stream of silent films including westerns, comedies, and action-adventures became Universal’s trademark. Laemmle also began inviting visitors to Universal City to observe his movie making, establishing Universal’s long-standing tradition of welcoming guests to enjoy the behind-the-scenes magic. However, the Universal tour was temporarily halted in the late 1920s, when “talkies” became the norm and producers demanded a set free of visitor noise. A few of Universal’s most notable feature films of these early years include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). All Quiet on the Western Front won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1930. Universal also became well known for its horror films of the early 1930s. These productions included such classics as Dracula, The Mummy,m Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein. In 1936, Carl Laemmle retired from the movie industry and sold Universal to the Standard Capital Company. In the years that immediately followed, the studio relied heavily on Deanna Durbin musicals, Abbott and Costello comedies, and Francis the Talking Mule. When Universal merged with International Pictures in 1946, Leo Spitz and William Goetz from International took over production, and the company became known as Universal-International. The production of Hamlet by Universal-International in association with J. Arthur Rank of England won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1948. In 1950, Universal acquired 140 acres of land adjoining the southern boundary of the studio, increasing the overall size of Universal City to 400 acres. 1952 brought another merger to Universal when Decca Records bought the company. Under the leadership of Milton Rackmil, President of Decca and Universal, and Edward Muhl, production head, some of the notable features of this era included Pillow Talk, Operation Petticoat, To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Glenn Miller Story, and Spartacus. In December 1958, MCA, Inc. purchased the Universal City Studio Lot. MCA’s Revue Television Productions relocated to Universal City, and Universal Pictures then leased back its property from MCA. This arrangement lasted three years until MCA and Universal officially merged in 1962. Jules Stein founded MCA, or the Music Corporation of America, in 1924 as a Chicago-based agency that booked bands into clubs and dance halls. The legacy of MCA was expanded and enriched by Lew Wasserman, who joined the company in 1936, became President in 1946, and over the years built MCA from a leading talent agency into a diversified global leader in the world of entertainment..." ~ http://www.universalstudioslot.com/about-us Spoken: Steven Spielberg - Director, Jurassic Park Michael Mann - Co-Writer/Director, Public Enemies Paul Rudd - Actor, The 40-Year-Old Virgin Peyton Reed - Director, The Break-Up Jeff Pirtle - Director, Archives & Collections NBC Universal Ivan Reitman - Producer, National Lampoon's Animal House Peter Berg - Director/Producer, Battleship Dan Aykroyd - Actor, The Blues Brothers Molly Orr - Studio Tour Guide, Universal Studios Hollywood John Landis - Director, National Lampoon's Animal House Ron Howard - Director, Apollo 13 John Carpenter - Director, The Thing (1982) Phil Alden Robinson - Writer/Director, Field of Dreams Meryl Streep - Actor, Out of Africa Stage 28 - Phantom Stage (Phantom of The Opera - 1924) Theatre ©2012 Universal Studios. The Great Movie Ride [ Disney World ] Hollywood Studios Complete Experience

20:01
This is a POV of The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Complete Experience video includes the line, pre-ride, and Pov of the ride in HD. Enjoy! The Great Movie Ride is an attraction at Walt Disney World's Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park. It is a dark ride which takes guests through scenes from famous films throughout history. The ride is located inside a recreation of the famous Hollywood landmark Grauman's Chinese Theatre. However, because the Walt Disney Company was denied permission to use the name "Grauman", the proper name of the building is simply "The Chinese Theatre". (Also, at the time the attraction was opened, the actual Grauman's Theater was officially known as "Mann's Chinese Theater" as it was owned by the Mann movie theater group.) The facade was almost completely blocked from view in 2001 when a giant replica of The Sorcerer's Hat was built directly in front of the facade. Since then, the hat has served as the park's symbol. Attraction type Dark Ride Theme: Motion picture history Opening date: May 1, 1989 Vehicle names: Moving Vehicles Vehicle capacity: 68 Cars per vehicle: 2 Guests per car: 34 Ride duration: 22 minutes Length: 1928 ft

Universal Studios Hollywood: A Universe Of Cinemagic (Vintage Special)

01:03:26
A vintage VHS special hosted by John Forsythe on Universal Studios Hollywood. In its hour, it features an array of attractions; from various studio tour lot extravaganzas to the most recent ride on its roster, Jurassic Park. You see rather extended looks at each of the attractions, and plenty of actual behind the scenes content and history. Unlike most specials produced for the park, this one truly feels more like an engaging presentation rather than an extended commercial for it. Highly recommended, and full of unique footage for most of the attractions. Produced by Panorama International Productions

Where Hollywood Keeps Its Iconic Props | Movies Insider

We took a trip to the Warner Brothers Corporate Archive in Los Angeles, California. This is where a lot of old props go from their movies once production is done. We saw a whole lot of stuff from the "Batman" franchise, including Batmobiles and Batman's many masks. We also saw items from "Suicide Squad," "The Matrix," and "Harry Potter." The newest thing we saw were outfits from 2018's "Crazy Rich Asians." Despite starting in just 1992, the Warner Brothers Corporate Archive goes way back. You can also find props and costumes from "My Fair Lady" and John Wayne. While the archive is not open to the public, much of this stuff goes on tour.
