An Exploration of Coming of Age Rituals & Rites of Passage in a Modern Era | Ron Fritz | TEDxBend

18:31
Ron Fritz discusses his family’s journey to create meaningful coming of age events for their three children and shows how you can create a similar rite of passage for a child in your life – whether it’s a son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild or friend. These important rites of passage help young teens understand what it means to become an adult by teaching life skills and reinforcing character traits and values. Our children need guidance through this difficult and confusing transition and Fritz describes how bringing a community together to mark this coming of age moment can make a positive impact in a young person’s life. Across the broad sweep of human history and in every corner of the globe, cultures have recognized the importance of “coming of age” rituals to help their children navigate the challenging transition from childhood to adulthood. In the United States, coming of age traditions are less common. Ron Fritz, father of three and CEO of an international technology company, believes in creating that meaningful rite of passage celebration to clarify for young people what it means to become an adult. Through his own family’s story, he hopes to inspire the resurgence of such traditions and maybe just spark a movement. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Maasai Rites Of Passage Part 1

04:25
The Maasai are arguably Africa's most famous tribe. Unlike most other Kenyan ethnic groups, they have largely retained their traditional lifestyles. Each Maasai man goes through the warrior stage, a period in their life between boyhood and becoming a man. And one can only become a warrior through several rituals. Willis Raburu has the details in this first part of our series, rites of passage.

10 Crazy Rites Of Passage People Actually Go Through

04:47
While there are a huge range of different cultures spread across the planet that practice a diverse set of ceremonies and religious rituals, many of them share common elements. One of the most prevalent is the rite of passage, a special set of circumstances that adolescents have to go through to progress to adulthood. Throughout human history, such coming of age ceremonies have played a hugely important role in producing fully formed members of society for all kinds of tribes and communities. However, many of them are suited to the environment and culture they are part of, making them seem bizarre and even insane compared to what others in different places have to go through.

Some of these practices aren't a normal part of these cultures anymore, but some are actually still going on. This list isn't for the faint of heart. Inside an Apache Rite of Passage Into Womanhood

11:14
For the Mescalero Apache Tribe, girls are not recognized as women until they have undergone the Sunrise Ceremony- an ancient, coming-of-age ceremony that lasts for four days. Last May, VICE got rare access to the ceremony for Julene Geronimo - the great, great grand-daughter of the renowned Apache leader, Geronimo. We followed Julene through each day of her arduous rite-of-passage to better understand what womanhood means for the Apache tribe, and how these ceremonies play a significant role in preserving a way of life that almost became extinct. Top 5.Weird Rites of Passage

03:12
Top 5 Weird Rites of Passage www.stopsleepgo.com 5.A bit of pain and then a bizarre act of athleticism is what you need to become a man and be allowed to marry in this indigenous tribe in Ethiopia. The ‘lucky’ candidate’s family and closest friends chant to create an ambient soundtrack whilst the men of the village whip him until he is scarred for life. They then line up four castrated bulls side by side and the boy, for some reason, runs over the top of them, much like James Bond and the alligators in ‘Live and let Die’. Strange but true 4.Boys are given some homemade gloves filled with ants to wear for a few minutes without flinching. Sounds a bit ticklish but otherwise OK, until you realize that these ants are Bullet Ants and they possess the most potent, powerful and painful sting of all the insects, liable to cause paralysis and severe unbearable pain for up to 24 hours, and that’s just off one of them. That’s how it’s done in the Brazilian Amazon 3.More extreme pain, and this time it’s really extreme. The boy candidate from the Mandan tribe in Dakota is forced to fast for four days without sleeping, which I guess is not pleasant but probably do-able. Then the horror begins. He is taken to a hut where wooden skewers are forced through his chest and he is then hung like a slab of meat from the ceiling whilst the rest of the congregation scrutinize his face, demanding he smiles throughout the whole process. After he passes out they let him down. And then cut off his little finger to offer to the spirits. That’s all 2.More extremity from Papua New Guinea with this rite of passage ritual that verges on the disgusting and definitely sounds very very painful. The people of the Matausa tribe believe that boy cannot become a man unless he is cleansed of all his impurities, and that means sticking wooden reeds down the ‘dirty’ boy’s throat until he vomits, then forcing them up his nostrils, before stabbing his tongue for good measure until his blood can be deemed to be pure. Sounds pretty reasonable to me 1.Very similar to bungee jumping except that there are no Health and Safety regulations and the bungee elastic cord is a couple of vines tied to the jumper’s ankles. And, also, the jumper’s goal is to get as close to brushing his head on the ground as possible. This is a coming-of-age ritual performed by the Vanuatu people from the small island archipelago in the south Pacific and it’s quite simple – if the jumper survives and lives, he’s a man. Exciting but a little harsh, especially if the man checking the length of the vines is no friend of yours.Top 5 Weird Rites,Passage,10 Most, INSANE Rites,A Man In Different, Cultures,Garry Kasparov,Rite of Passage,My Story,Top 10 Most, Bizarre Traditions,World 2015,Incredible Ritual,Hundreds,Poisonous, Bullet Ants,SEXY BALLERINA,Top 5 Bizarre, Animal Mating Rituals,Top 5 Weirdest,internet,5 Strangest Photos,World War,Top 5 Strangest, Unidentified Creatures

Rites of Passage in Hinduism, Judaism and Christianity Pt. 1 of 2

10:49
By Whitney Wilke through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org This very clear explanation of what a rite of passage is and the roles these play in three major traditions. We hear of the jatakarma and initiation of the unknowing child to Krishna belief, through the sacred thread and caste/social obligation to the death rituals and final rite of passage. Judaism is next, and ouch! Circumcision and the bris kit. Girls are included these days as evinced by the simchat bat. Bar and now bat mitzvahs are the subject of the next segment. Boys and girls are now adults and can marry and all of it at age 13 and 12 years of age! Just like the old days. Christianity finalizes this examination. Baptism, eucharist, confirmation and marriage are among the sacraments. Catholics like more such rituals, while extreme Protestants seem to go for baptism and Eucharist only. This is a very professionally produced work, very apt images and music, narration is constant and well-enunciated without music overwhelming the narration. Nice job!

Rites of Passage: 25 Concepts in Anthropology

09:33
A preview of the concept of "rite of passage". These are also known as rites-de-passage. Important concepts include transition & threshold; Western Desert (Ngatatjara, Pitjantjatjara, Wiluna Mob, Jigalong Mob); separation, liminal period, reaggregation. Important contributors are Arnold van Gennep, Victor Turner, Gregory Bateson, and Gilbert Herdt. Note that while marriage in the Western Desert is not through a wedding there is a form of betrothal. See Tonkinson, The Mardu Aborigines, p. 98. About me: I'm Nick Herriman, author of the books "Entangled State" and "Witch-hunt and Conspiracy". I lecture in Anthropology at La Trobe University. I am also the 'Audible Anthropologist' on iTunes. About "25 Concepts in Anthropology": I preview what I think are the 25 most important concepts in socio-cultural anthropology. Each concept provides a unique insight into what it is to be human. Initiation Rituals - How Rites Of Passage Will Give Your Life A New Meaning

Initiation Rituals - How Rites Of Passage Will Give Your Life A New Meaning Click Here To Check my Website: www.BossLifeHacks.com Initiation Rituals - How Rites Of Passage Will Give Your Life A New Meaning is the brand new video on BossLifehacks. As we humans have progressed through the years, we have repeatedly employed new methods and tools to create an optimal way of living for us and our offspring. Unfortunately, a great deal of ancient wisdom has been for the most part discarded, mistakenly assumed to be obsolete or pointless, such as Initiation Rituals. Now, the reason they work and the reason our predecessors employed them so strictly (and some tribes still do) is because they are so effective. When you go through one of these Initiation Rituals, you’re really still the same person; nothing physically has changed yet. But your mentality and the way people look at you has been completely altered. And these shifts have great weight to them. Rites & Rituals - Baptism | Culture Express The word 'Baptism' comes from the Greek word 'Baptisma' which means washing. Baptism is a purification ceremony of the Christian for the admission & adoption of an individual in to the Christian Church. The purification is done with the use of water. By fully or partially immersing in water, the individual is symbolically cleansed of all the sins. Most Christians baptise "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". Inside a Gang Initiation with the Silent Murder Crips

17:14
For JT, a young prospect making his way into a local branch of the Crips in Brooklyn, joining the gang is about family: Getting close to a group of men that care about him, and are willing to back him up if he ever finds himself in trouble. But getting initiated isn't easy. We followed JT through the process of getting made to see what drew him to the gang, and to hear why he's willing to be "squared in"—suffering a brutal beating at the hands of his best friends. TEDxCLE - Paul Hill, Jr. - Rituals and Community Regeneration

15:56
On January 31, 2011, Paul Hill, Jr. stepped aside after 30 years as the CEO of East End Neighborhood House. East End Neighborhood House is one of the oldest (104 years) neighborhood based non-profit organizations in Cleveland, Ohio and nationally known for its best practices in providing youth and family services. Other employment experiences have been with the Federal Government (U.S. Justice Department and U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare) and teaching within various public school systems and institutions of higher education. Other experiences and projects are related to being a W. K. Kellogg Foundation Leadership Fellow (1989-92, Group X). His learning project and field research was studying male socialization in indigenous cultures around the world. Upon completion of the fellowship, the Foundation supported his field of study and research through its African American Boys and Men Initiative (1993-1996). In 1992 he wrote a book, Coming of Age, African America Images, Chicago. The book was based on his field of study and applications. Since 1992 he has published several articles in peer-review journals on rites of passage as a process for human development. Presently, he is working on a revision of his first book, Coming of Age. He recently wrote Rites of Passage: Birth, Initiation, Marriage, Death a Chapter in African Presence in Black America. Paul's interest as a student and practitioner in rite of passage for youth development and community building began in the late 70's. In 1993 he established the National Rites of Passage Institute. The purpose of the Institute is to create a critical mass and community of adults to develop children and youth and regenerate community through rites of passage. He has always operated from the premise that there is not a youth problem in America; there is an adult problem. Youth do not develop in a vacuum. Since 1993, the Institute has provided training to 1000 plus men and women from 20 cities, the District of Columbia and Toronto, Canada; they have been actively involved in guiding and supporting a minimum of 10,000 children and youth in neighborhood and community based programs.
