Waimea River Break

05:43
Waimea River Break, North Shore, Oahu BEFORE PEOPLE START MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE, I'D LIKE YOU TO TAKE A SECOND TO THINK ABOUT WHERE ALL RIVERS LEAD. Here's a hint - (into the ocean!) When it has been raining and the waimea river fills up to capacity it breaks through the sand and flows into the ocean. It starts with a trickle then turns into a raging river. Once the water is finished flowing, the waves from the ocean build up the sand again and block the river from flowing into the ocean. What is happening here is people are speeding up the process a little. For all the worriers out there who think the beach is now ruined - after a few hours of this the river is blocked from flowing into the ocean again by the sand that gets built up from the legendary Waimea Bay waves. All goes back to normal after a few hours. Letting the river flow into the ocean like this is also beneficial to the Waimea valley upstream. If the river wasn’t allowed to flow into the ocean, the Waimea valley would flood anytime there is a lot of rain. The Waimea Valley is home to a beautiful botanical garden And a farmers market that is enjoyed by many visitors a day. So flooding there would be unfortunate. The world renowned Waimea Bay life guards at this beach know when the river is full enough and when the sand can be dug out. We tried tried starting it the day before and they stopped us. The next day we showed up at the beach and noticed people (locals) had brought shoves and the life guards let us start digging. They supervise to keep everyone safe while allowing people to have some fun. The beach is not ruined, no one is stranded - you can get to the parking lot or road from either side of the river mouth. And honestly it was one of the most memorable days we’ve had at this beach. If you’re in Oahu in the winter, watch for a high river at Waimea Bay and you might get lucky. Sometimes the river breaks through on its own during the night and you miss it. You’ll know if it just happened if the river banks are really high and steep. And if they are, you missed it but the high sand banks are really fun to play on. I believe this happens several times over the winter months depending on rain fall.

Drinkable Rivers as indicators for healthy ways of living. Only a few generations ago all rivers were drinkable, now almost none. This is a sign of how we live. A drinkable river, the Rupert River in northern Québec Canada taught me the value of relationships for the health of living systems. This clip introduces my mission to engage local people, companies and every enthusiast towards Drinkable Rivers CC as indicators for healthy ways of living. I will walk rivers from source-to-sea. I will start with the river Maas - with length of 925km in Europe with source in France, to Belgium, Netherlands, and the Northsea - in May 2018. From Source to Sea: Innovative Ways to Tackle Marine Pollution

01:31:55
Marine pollution is a serious threat to human health, ecosystems, and economies – and ocean plastics is a particularly visible manifestation of this troubling trend. The flow of plastic into rivers and oceans is getting worse as production and demand for plastic increase globally. Did you know that an estimated eight million additional tons of plastic waste enter the ocean every year – the equivalent of one dump truck of plastic per minute? Urgent action is required to address this issue. Showcasing innovative solutions will be at the core of this event, so don’t miss our livestream on April 11, 2019 to learn more. We hope these solutions will encourage governments to provide the kind of incentives and policies needed to drive action, innovation and technical changes. You can follow the entire event live and share your thoughts right on this page, or on Twitter using #BeatPlasticPollution. Watch, engage, and be part of the global conversation! The event is organized in partnership with advocacy organization Global Citizen, whose movement to end extreme poverty asks citizens to take ocean action to combat plastic pollution, protect the poorest parts of the planet and strengthen economies.

India Wants To Use Flesh Eating Turtles To Rid The Ganges Of Decomposing Bodies (HBO)

07:11
India’s Ganges river is the main source of water for half a billion people. It’s also holy to the country’s almost 1 billion Hindus, who bathe in the river to be cleansed of their sins and believe that if a body is cremated and released into the water at Varanasi it can escape the cycle of reincarnation. But the river’s cleansing abilities are limited by the fact that the Ganges is one of the world’s most polluted waterways: A billion gallons of raw sewage and industrial waste currently pour into it every day. The Indian government’s most recent initiative to tackle the pollution problem, Namami Gange, was announced in 2014 and promised $3 billion in funding. So far, it has yielded very few results, and a 2017 investigation concluded that just $205 million had been spent. Still, the government has launched some pretty outlandish plans, including breeding thousands of flesh-eating turtles to deal with the 200 tons of half-cremated, decomposing bodies that enter the river at Varanasi every year, and commissioning an official pop anthem for the river to rouse patriotic sentiment. With a growing scandal on its hands, Narendra Modi’s government is scrambling to finish planned Ganges projects before the 2019 general elections. But environmental scientist and campaigner Rakesh Jaiswal said he hasn’t seen any change so far. “The situation is worsening, and in the last 24 years I have seen no improvement at all,” he told VICE News. Weezer: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

15:52
April 1, 2019 | Robin Hilton -- This is probably the loosest you'll ever see Weezer. Known for meticulously produced — and electric — live shows, frontman Rivers Cuomo and the rest of the band settled in behind the Tiny Desk for an entirely acoustic set without the in-ear monitors, click track or vocal separation they usually employ to stay locked-in and tight for bigger performances. The result is surprisingly intimate, with songs that feel lived-in and rumpled, like an old flannel shirt from the '90s. Weezer opened with one of the band's rarer songs: "Longtime Sunshine," a 1994 track that's only appeared as a Rivers Cuomo home recording on bootlegs and compilations, and on the deluxe edition of Pinkerton. Then the band performed a stripped-down version of its electro-pop song "Living in L.A.," from Weezer's new self-titled "Black Album," followed by another deep cut, "Across the Sea." It's a song Cuomo originally wrote in his early 20s, inspired by a fan letter he'd received from a young woman in Japan. While beloved by many Gen-Xers who'd first heard it on 1996's Pinkerton, the song's lyrics haven't aged terribly well. Weezer returned to its newest material to close the set with "High as a Kite," from the new album. A song of innocence and escapism, Cuomo sings about daydreaming and how he wants to disappear — which is exactly what the band did once the song was over, but not before Cuomo told the crowd, "We are Weezer, from the planet Earth. Have a nice life!" SET LIST "Longtime Sunshine" "Living in L.A." "Across the Sea" "High as a Kite" MUSICIANS Rivers Cuomo: lead vocals, guitar; Brian Bell: guitar, vocals, keys; Scott Shriner: bass guitar; Patrick Wilson: drums CREDITS Producers: Robin Hilton, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Beck Harlan, Kimani Oletu; Associate Producer: Bobby Carter; Production Assistant: Adelaide Sandstrom; Photo: Amir Alfiky/NPR

PADMA RIVER │ RIVERS IN BANGLADESH │ পদ্মা নদী

06:07
Padma River is one of the major rivers in Bangladesh. It is the main distributary of the Ganges. The Ganges originates in the Gangotri Glacier of the Himalaya and enters Bangladesh at Shibganj in the district of Chapai Nababganj. It flows southeast for 120 kilometres to its confluence with the Meghna River near the Bay of Bengal. According to the Hindus, it takes the sanctity of the Ganges. The Ganges-Padma hydrodynamic system has formed one of the world's largest delta complex covering a major portion of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Padma is 4 to 8 km wide. The famous Goalandaghat-Chandpur steamer route is mostly on this river. The discharge of the Padma rises to 750,000 cumec in the monsoon. The low-level discharge of the river during the dry season is of the order of 15,000 cumec. © 2017 PANORAMA CREATORS. All Rights Reserved. Rivers of meltwater on Greenland’s ice sheet contribute to rising sea levels

03:27
Using satellite and field work after an extreme melt event in Greenland, a UCLA-led study finds that melt-prone areas on its ice sheet develop a remarkably efficient drainage system of stunning blue streams and rivers that carry meltwater into moulins (sinkholes) and ultimately the ocean. However, the team's measurements at the ice's edge show that climate models alone can overestimate the volume of meltwater flowing to the ocean because they fail to account for water storage beneath the ice. The research, led by UCLA Geography professor Laurence C. Smith and published in the January 27, 2014 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, can be found here: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2015/01/07/1413024112.full.pdf+html

Colorado Rivers : America's Largest Water Source

00:46
Colorado is often referred to as the "mother of rivers." With approximately 8,000 miles of streams it's a very accurate nickname. Colorado is the nation's main source of water and the state has only recently adopted a plan to manage its resources. The Colorado Conservation Board hopes that the $20 billion dollar plan approved last fall will save up to 130 billion gallons of water a year through reuse, conservation, and new developments. The Colorado River system alone provides water to one in ten Americans, so it is essential to maintain this critical source of water. http://www.wired.com/2016/05/matt-nager-colorado-water/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
