Windlesham House School - Girls Boarding

02:01
The majority of boys and girls at Windlesham board – sometimes because their parents live abroad, sometimes because their parents live in London and always because they love the fun, friendly atmosphere where they are encouraged to ‘grow up’ in what is often described as the “Windlesham Family”. Increasingly we see local children who begin in the younger years as day, campaigning heavily (and heartily!) to their parents to board. Sport, music and extra curricula activities become increasingly interwoven into a child’s day as they grow older, and become more aware of the enrichment that boarding at Windlesham brings.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michelle Obama, US First Lady: "Although the circumstances of our lives may seem very distant, with me standing here as the First Lady of the United States of America, and you just getting through school. I want you to know we have very much in common. For nothing in my life's path would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady of the United States of America." 4. Wide shot of Mrs. Obama at podium 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michelle Obama, US First Lady: "I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by the people around them. I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life - grandmothers, teachers, aunts, cousins, neighbours - who taught me about quiet strength and dignity." 6. Cutaway of audience 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michelle Obama, US First Lady: "Sorry. I don't know if anybody is cutting class. I never did it. I loved getting A's. I like being smart. I liked being on time. Mrs. Obama hugging students 12. Mrs. Obama waves goodbye and then moves down stage to hug girls in audience, girls run up to edge of stage STORYLINE US First Lady Michelle Obama appeared to win over both the British press and public on Thursday as she accompanied her husband, US President Barack Obama to London while he attended the G20 summit. While the leaders of the world were discussing the future of the world's economies, Mrs Obama made a surprise visit to an all-girls school in north London. She spoke to the pupils at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School about growing up on Chicago's south side, and urged them to think of education as "cool." "I never cut class. I liked being smart. I liked getting A's," she told the assembled girls. She spoke of the importance of love, strong values, education and a "whole lot of hard work" as she described her childhood, and said: "You too, with these values, can control your own destiny, you too can pave the way." Mrs Obama also tried to draw similarities between her life and the lives of the members of her young audience, saying they had very much in common. "For nothing in my life's path would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady of the United States of America" she said. Before leaving, Mrs Obama stopped to hug as many pupils as she could and was mobbed by excited girls as she leant over the stage to greet them. The visit to the all-girls school - her first solo visit during the G20 Summit - echoes her Women In Excellence programme in America, which aims to empower and inspire young women. Three UK schoolgirls 'travelling to Syria'

10:00
http://twitter.com/onlyfirstnews Three east London schoolgirls have flown to Turkey and there are fears they may cross the Syrian border and join the Islamic State terrorist group. Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and an unnamed 15-year-old, pupils at Bethnal Green Academy, flew from Gatwick on Tuesday, during half-term. Commander Richard Walton, of the Metropolitan Police, said he feared they were "extremely vulnerable". The trio are friends with a fourth girl who travelled to Syria in December. At the time the three girls were interviewed as her friends, police said. Cdr Walton said the teenagers' families were "devastated" but there was a "good chance" the girls were still in Turkey. He hoped a police appeal, via social media, would persuade them not to enter Syria. They were last seen at their homes on Tuesday morning when they gave their families "plausible reasons" to be out for the day, police said. The girls boarded a Turkish Airlines flight, which landed in Turkey on Tuesday evening. The third girl is not being named at the request of her family. Shamima is possibly travelling under the name of her 17-year-old sister Aklima Begum, police said. 'Increasing concerns' Cdr Walton said he hoped the trio would "hear our concerns for their safety and have the courage to return now, back to their families who are so worried about them." He said the force was becoming "increasingly concerned" about a growing trend of young girls showing an interest or intent in joining Islamic State. "The choice of returning home from Syria is often taken away from those under the control of Islamic State, leaving their families in the UK devastated and with very few options to secure their safe return," he said. "If we are able to locate these girls whilst they are still in Turkey we have a good possibility of being able to bring them home to their families." Shamima and the unnamed 15-year-old were reported missing by their families on Tuesday evening, while Kadiza was reported missing on Wednesday morning. Police have issued a description of the three girls: Kadiza Sultana is 5ft 6in and slim build. She was wearing black rimmed glasses, a long black jacket with a hood, a grey striped scarf, a grey jumper and dark red trousers and was carrying a black holdall. She speaks English with a London accent and Bengali. Shamima Begum is 5ft 7in. She was wearing black, thick-rimmed glasses, a black hijab, a light brown and black leopardprint scarf, a dark red jumper, black trousers and a jacket, and was carrying a dark blue holdall with white straps. She speaks English with a London accent and Bengali. The 15-year-old unnamed girl is 5ft 6in and slim build. She was wearing black, thick-rimmed glasses, a black headscarf, a long dark green jacket with a fur-lined hood, a light yellow long-sleeved top, black trousers and white trainers, and was carrying a black Nike holdall. She speaks English and Amhrick. Those with information can call the free Anti-Terrorist Hotline number on 0800 789 321. Salman Farsi, a spokesman for the East London Mosque, said: "They have been misled. I do not know what was promised to them. It is just sad. "I think the girls need to know they have done nothing wrong. They have been manipulated." Dr Erin Saltman, from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which offers independent expertise in counter-terrorism, said IS propaganda targets young women specifically with the promise of being part of a humanitarian movement. She said: "They are the wives and mothers of the future jihadists so quite a lot of dedication and time has been put into trying to allure these younger women to come and join in these efforts. "They are very much restricted to the house and home for the most part. There is strict sharia law in the region. "To be able to leave the house they need permission. They are only to leave if they want to pray or if there is a dire medical situation." A fellow pupil at Bethnal Green Academy, identified only as Sadek, urged the trio to return. He said: "It's really sad what's happened and I think the government should try its best to help in any way, find out what happened and try to help the family as well. "They need to educate people more, tell them about the risk of going to Syria, that it's not safe out there." A spokeswoman for Tower Hamlets Council said: "The council fully supports the appeal issued today by the police for information that will help to find the three students from Bethnal Green Academy in East London."

Three UK schoolgirls go to Syria to join ISIS and become ‘jihadi brides’

00:59
Three British school girls have reportedly made them way from Turkey to Syria in order to join Islamic State’s cause. The trio sparked an international search to stop them from becoming teenage ‘jihadi brides.’ However, the Telegraph reported that intelligence sources in Turkey said Amira Abase, 15, Shamima Begum, 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16, crossed into Syria on Friday by car and could be in the ISIS-run town of Tal Abyad. The three girls, all students at Bethnal Green Academy in London, reportedly flew from Gatwick to Istanbul on Tuesday during their half-term break. The Telegraph’s source said upon arriving in Istanbul, the girls were met by an ISIS member “charged with helping foreigners who want to join the group.” The trio stayed in Turkey two days before traveling to Syria, where the source claimed that a “a smuggler” would help the girls find their way into jihadist territory. It isn’t clear how girls decided to take the step to go to Syria to join ISIS, but at least one of the girls was reportedly in contact on Twitter with Aqsa Mahmood, who left Glasgow to join IS in November 2013 after becoming radicalized. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. London: Schoolgirls v Shell Oil.

06:32
A video shot in London, the UK capital on March 22 2010. I start here with shots of a rather scruffy Leicester Square; scruffy because it was being prepared for the European premiere of the film "Kick Ass" with Nicholas Cage & his character's daughter, "Hitgirl" played by Chloe Grace Moretz. I have seen that film now, and the title name refers to the wannabe hero. The film uses quite graphic violence and one hears 13 years old Chloe talk of "cock" and she also uses rather more startling language, including the "C" word! Chloe was supposedly 11 Years old in the film. The video continues in Whitehall, outside the Department of Health, with a demonstration by a college party, and an attempt to break the World record for continuous protest: they succeeded .They protested 23 times in eight hours, breaking the old record. I didn't catch the name of the school, but I did get the organiser's note that they were from the Amnesty International group at their school, in Surrey. Well done girls! They evidently do not like the Shell oil company''s activities in Africa.

The Girls Who Fled To Syria: Groomed By The Islamic State

23:03
In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain. The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves. VICE News gained intimate access to the father of one girl, Amira, and joined him as he dealt with the press and parliament to find out what it's like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones. AP By Duygu Guvenc - McClatchy Foreign Staff A Syrian former army lieutenant who defected from the military three years ago has become the central figure in a tale of intrigue that ended last month in the flight to the Islamic State of three British schoolgirls. Everyone agrees that Muhammad el Rashed arranged to smuggle the girls to Syria after they’d arrived in Turkey, some of the hundreds of Britons thought to have joined the Islamic State in recent years. What’s less clear is how Rashed came to be in a position to help smuggle them. The Turkish government charges that he was a paid agent of Canadian intelligence, and officials imply that’s proof that Canada, as well as the United Kingdom, is helping to finance the Islamic State. For its part, the Canadian government hasn’t commented on Rashed’s statement to police that he was working as an intelligence operative. A representative of Canadian Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney declined to comment about the reports when asked about them last week in the House of Commons. The Canadian government also hasn’t commented on Turkish claims that payments wired to Rashed were immediately transferred to Islamic State operatives in Syria. The amount he allegedly received remains unknown. Turkey has been under pressure from its European neighbors to stop the flow of recruits to the Islamic State, most of whom pass through the country. In the best-known recent case, Hayat Boumeddiene, the common-law wife of an Islamic State sympathizer who killed four Jews in a grocery in Paris during the Charlie Hebdo violence in January, slipped across a border crossing about 300 yards from the office of the district governor, even though Turkish authorities had spotted her as suspicious on her arrival in the country. Turkey has said there’s little it can do to stop people who arrive in the country legally, and it’s blamed European nations for not notifying it fast enough when possible recruits leave their home countries. The Turkish allegations raise the question of whether officials are highlighting Rashed’s alleged Canada connection to deflect attention from claims that Turkey has been at best lukewarm in its opposition to the presence of radical Islamists in Syria. The story began last month in Great Britain, when the three girls, Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and Amira Abase, 15, disappeared from Bethnal Green Academy in London. Their families alerted British authorities and told them they thought the three had caught a flight from London to Istanbul on Feb. 17. Closed-circuit video later released by Scotland Yard showed the girls at London’s Gatwick Airport. Turkish surveillance video caught the girls waiting for 18 hours on Feb. 18 at a bus station in Istanbul. A subsequent video made public last week by the Turkish TV channel A Haber showed Rashed interacting with the girls in Gaziantep, a city in southern Turkey. The video, apparently taken via a hidden camera by Rashed himself, shows him urging the girls to hurry. “You will be there in one hour,” he says at one point, apparently referring to Syria....
