UK sends HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier to South China Sea & Pacific show of strength to China - The aircraft-carrier Queen Elizabeth, with two squadrons of F-35 stealth fighters on board, will be sent into disputed waters in the Pacific in a display of “hard power”, the defence secretary is due to announce in a major speech on Britain’s military strategy in the post-Brexit world. Gavin Williamson will declare the UK “may have to intervene” in future to confront aggression from countries like Russia and China who “flout international law” and are “resurgent” in rebuilding their armed forces. Britain and its western allies have to be ready “to use hard power to support our interests”, the defence secretary is due to say in an address at Royal United Services Institute in London on Monday. “We have to be ready to show the high price of aggressive behaviour, ready to strengthen our resilience.” Mr Williamson will say: “Britain has its greatest opportunity in 50 years to redefine its role as we leave the European Union. And with the world changing so rapidly it is up to us to seize the opportunity that Brexit brings. “We can build new alliances, rekindle old ones and, most importantly, make it clear that we are the country that will act when required, and a nation that people can turn to when the world needs leadership.” The defence secretary says part of the £1.8bn increase in the defence budget will fund “very significant investment” in offensive cyber operations and defence against hostile attacks on British networks. There will also be a multi-million pound war-fighting fund, with contributions from all three services to develop innovative equipment. Mr Williamson’s focus on “hard power” is a shift from the emphasis by successive UK governments on using “soft power” – diplomacy, trade and cultural exchanges – to spread British influence abroad after the long and costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sources close to Mr Williamson stress that he is fully behind using “soft power” tools but believes there must also be a willingness to deploy the armed forces when necessary. “History has taught us that crisis comes when it is least expected,” he is expected to say. “As uncertainty grows we must be ready to act and bring others with us.” In December Mr Williamson visited Odessa, the home port of the Ukrainian ships seized by Russian forces in the Black Sea and announced that he intended to send warships into the region to assert freedom of navigation. Moscow described the visit as an act of “provocation.” The planned Pacific voyage of Queen Elizabeth with its complement of Joint Strike Fighters will take the carrier into a naval arena of rising tension. China is in dispute with neighbouring states and America over the ownership of a number of islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, its claims on territorial waters and the building of naval bases, the so-called “string of pearls”. Japan, India, Australia and the US have formed the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue group, with joint naval exercises aimed at isolating China. It has described foreign warships asserting freedom of navigation in the South China Seas as a threat to its sovereignty. Michael Clarke, a senior fellow at Royal United Services Institute, said: “Leaving aside the wrongs and rights of Brexit, there is a need for Britain to engage with the rest of the world. There is nothing wrong with the Queen Elizabeth being sent to the Pacific in this kind of a deployment, after all we have already got forces back east of Suez. “Gavin Williamson seems to want to make his mark. He sees defence as an extension of foreign policy. And, so far, he has emerged as one of the very few ministers in this Conservative government whose reputation has not been badly damaged by the Brexit crisis. “The question, though, is whether he will be able to get the support of the rest of the government, his fellow ministers, in this forward policy.” General Sir Richard Barrons, who had served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, commented: “There was a lot of talk of ‘soft power’, especially at the end of the Cold War, but ‘hard power’ is now back in fashion. “We have seen how certain states have taken belligerent, aggressive approach in international relations. It is the right policy that the UK should take its share of responsibility along with allies in trying to enforce the international rules based order, and the Queen Elizabeth and the JSFs is probably the right way to do it. The next generation of fighter aircraft for the RAF and the Royal Navy have landed at their new home in Marham, Norfolk. The F-35 Lightning stealth warplanes each cost nearly £100m. Britain has 15 of the short take-off and vertical landing aircraft and will buy 138 in total from American aviation giant Lockheed Martin. They will former part of the newly re-formed 617 Squadron which was the famous Dambusters flying unit from the Second World War. They will operate on land and at sea including off the decks of the new £3.1 billion Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. The first four F-35s were flown 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from South Carolina on an eight hour journey supported by mid-air refuelling. Around £550m has been invested in RAF Marham as part of a major change programme to get the base ready to house the new jets. The £3 billion ($3.9 billion) carrier’s outing will also sail into the Middle East and Mediterranean and will be officially a mixed U.K./U.S. deployment. “Significantly British and American F-35s will be embedded in the carrier’s air wing. Enhancing the reach and lethality of our forces (and) reinforcing the fact that United States remains the very closest of partners,” Williamson said. U.S. sailors have joined forces with Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy for the first time during a submarine-hunting exercise in the Philippine Sea. The opportunity for the two-day trilateral exercise, which was expected to wrap up Saturday, surfaced following the completion of a nine-month deployment by the Royal Navy’s oldest serving frigate, HMS Argyll. Alongside the Argyll, the JMSDF helicopter destroyer JS Izumo and a Navy submarine are also taking part in the anti-submarine warfare exercise Submarine Group 7. A Navy P-8A maritime patrol aircraft from the Florida-based Patrol Squadron 16 also participated in the drills. source:https://goo.gl/wESPrV ------------------------------------------------- #Navy joins UK and Japan#philippine Sea

China has laid claim to almost all of the strategic South China Sea which is viewed as important for shipping lanes and potential resources. On Sunday, United States destroyers USS Spruance and USS Preble sailed close to the Spratly Islands, territory disputed by China and the Philippines. China claimed Monday that the ships entered without official permission but a spokesman for the US Navy's 7th Fleet told US Military News that the operation was to "challenge excessive maritime claims and preserve access to the waterways as governed by international law." China is in the process of developing its own aircraft carrier capability, with currently only one considered combat-ready. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) the country could have as many as 6 carriers by the 2030s.

An “armada” of Russian warships is passing between the UK and France, Friday, as Russia boosts its military presence in the Mediterranean Sea. Two British naval ships are shadowing the Russian vessels, despite the group remaining in international waters. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said this was "part of our steadfast commitment to keep Britain safe". The aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and two other ships are thought to be making their way to the eastern Mediterranean to support Russian military efforts in Syria. The ships are travelling south from their northern Russian base in Severomorsk, past Norway, and through the Straights of Gibraltar. It is seen by some as a show of military might, as it "would be easier to deploy more planes to Russia’s airbase in Syria. "What are the top stories today? Part of a private collection of jets tucked away in a sleepy Worcestershire village is this poor neglected Sea Hawk. Sadly it is clear she's been badly neglected, and she is now disappearing into the foliage growing up around her. A great shame for a rare Mk.3 to be allowed to deteriorate like this. Videoed here in January 2017, we hope that somehow soon this bird will find a home in doors before its too late!

Odo Puiu Events invites you to watch …. UK Jets Intercept Russian Tu-160 Bombers Above North Sea Footage released by UK Ministry of Defence show Royal Air Force Typhoon jets flying alongside two long-range Russian fighter jets as they flew above the North Sea near the United Kingdom's airspace on Monday. The UK Ministry of Defence said that RAF fighter jets from Scotland's Lossiemouth airfield intercepted Russian Tupolev Tu-160s about 48 km (30 miles) from UK airspace and escorted them away. The Russian Defence Ministry responded in a statement saying: "All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict accordance with international rules for using airspace without infringement on any countries' borders." According to the Russian MoD, the duration of the flight exceeded 13 hours, during which crews of the strategical missile-carriers Tu-160 completed reloading in the air. The statement added that Russian airplanes were accompanied by Eurofighter Typhoon BBC and the F-16 of Belgium Air Military Force. According to reports, this is not the first incident occurring between Russian and UK air forces. In September 2017, UK scrambled jets to monitor a pair of Russian planes approaching the country's airspace. Thanks for watching. As an avid Cirrus SR22 pilot with over 1,000 hours I jumped at the chance to get a flight in the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet with my good friend Andrew. One of the first vision jets in the UK and its a revolution in personal transport as it fulfils the ambition of being a family jet and personal jet which can seat 7 people in comfort all around Europe. We fly from Blackpool Airport up to Inverness Airport in Scotland and discuss the difference between the SF50 and the SR22 and how a pilot can make the transition from a piston aircraft into a jet aircraft. We talk about type ratings needed to fly the vision jet and also the training requirements.

The UK’s Royal Air Force says it has launched two Romania-based Typhoon fighter jets, responding to a Russian bomber that was spotted heading towards NATO airspace, over the western Black Sea. The jet took off from Romania’s Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base on the coast of the Black Sea to scramble the Russian Su-24 FENCER aircraft. The Russian fighter plane was monitored by two Typhoon pilots from the 135 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW), in accordance with the NATO Enhanced Air Policing (EAP) mission the RAF is conducting in Romania. The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multirole fighter. The Typhoon was designed originally as an air superiority fighter and is manufactured by a consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo that conducts the majority of the project through a joint holding company, Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH formed in 1986. NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency manages the project and is the prime customer. A group of Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel were at sea onboard USS WASP, joining American colleagues in the latest F-35B Lightning II fast jet trials. Lightning II is a STOVL aircraft: Short Take Off Vertical Landing. It will place the UK at the forefront of fighter technology, giving the RAF a true multi-role all weather, day and night capability, able to operate from well-established land bases, deployed locations or the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers. The Royal Navy’s vision for tactical integration of the F-35B into their current arsenal is similar to the Marine Corps’ plan to integrate the F-35 with legacy aircraft, such as the AV-8B Harrier and the F/A-18 Hornet, and gradually phase out legacy aircraft over the coming decades. Planes make some insane crosswind landing during a UK storm at Birmingham Airport. Pilots found it hard to land at Birmingham's BHX Airport as gale force winds rocked the aircraft from side to side on Saturday. One plane dipped violently as it tried to land in strong crosswinds and another's wing almost clipped the runway as the plane touched down. An A380 bounced as it landed. Strong winds have once again hit the UK with snow expected on higher grounds. This footage is being managed exclusively by Newsflare. South China Sea: UK and US naval manoeuvres threaten to INFLAME territorial tensions US and UK navy ships last week conducted joint manoeuvres in the South China Sea - a move which could threaten to escalate regional tensions amid fears of growing Chinese dominance. Both the UK and US insisted the drills were to emphasise their shared goal of peace and stability in the region. Commander of the USS McCampbell, Commander Allison Christy said: “Professional engagement with our British counterparts allows us the opportunity to build upon our existing strong relationships and learn from each other.” The news release that accompanied the manoeuvres stated it was a “personnel exchange of designed to address common maritime security priorities”. The UK is set to double its number of world-beating F-35 stealth jets after ordering 17 more aircraft. The 17 new F-35B aircraft will be delivered between 2020 and 2022, and will complement the 16 British aircraft currently based at RAF Marham and in the US, as well as two additional aircraft which are already on order. Overall, the UK has committed to procure 138 aircraft over the life of the programme. The fighter jets will be jointly manned by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy and can operate from land and sea, forming a vital part of Carrier-Strike when operating from the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. #UKf35 #RoyalNavyF35 #RafF35 ------------------------------------------- Music by DTD Music https://soundcloud.com/mehmettorcuk

The Royal Navy is currently testing a landing system that will allow its F-35B Joint Strike Fighters to fly farther and with greater payloads. The shipborne rolling vertical landing will allow F-35Bs to land on the U.K.’s new carriers with larger payloads, eliminating the need to jettison expensive stores just to land on ships. The U.K.’s newest aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, has spent the better part of a month off the U.S. East Coast practicing takeoffs and landings with F-35B fighter jets. Queen Elizabeth and her sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales, each will embark 12 to 36 F-35Bs at a time, forming the tip of the spear of British expeditionary forces. The 65,000 ships are the largest warships ever built in the U.K. One odd feature (or lack thereof) on the two carriers is the absence of aircraft catapults and arresting gear. The carrier uses ski ramps to boost F35s into the air. As for landing without the presence of arresting gear, the F35s will use a technique called shipboard rolling vertical landings. Unlike US Marine Corps F-35Bs, which hover over the flight decks of amphibious assault ships and then descend vertically to a landing, the Royal Navy’s F-35Bs will approach the rear flight decks of the Queen Elizabeth class in a slow descent, their exhaust nozzles straight down, touching down on the flight deck and then quickly coming to a direct stop.

Britain plans to send its flagship aircraft carrier to the Pacific in an effort to conduct freedom of navigation patrols in the South China Sea region in response to concerns regarding freedom of navigation in the area, The Guardian reported. Last week the Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop discussed joint naval operations in the Pacific Ocean with the UK’s Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson during two days of talks in Scotland. The ministers mentioned the challenges to international “norms and conventions” in the Pacific region and clear threats to the “rules-based international order.” They said these threats justified greater defense and security cooperation between the UK and Australia. Gavin Williamson reinforced Britain’s new commitment in the Indo-Pacific region, including the opening of new embassies in Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu and efforts to enhance naval deployment in the region. He said for the first time, since 2013, Britain has been deploying naval ships to the Pacific as part of the country’s enhanced military alliance with Australia. “We are hoping on deploying H M S Queen Elizabeth to the Pacific and sailing side-by-side with Australian vessels," Williamson said. H M S Queen Elizabeth is the flagship ship of the Royal Navy and the fleet’s largest ever warship, capable of carrying up to 60 aircraft. Once operational in 2020, it will normally travel with a “carrier strike group” involving several frigates for anti-submarine warfare, destroyers for air defense and potentially a hunter killer submarine. In recent years, China has devoted extensive resources to reclaiming many reefs from the South China Sea, forming artificial islands that only fuel the debate about sovereignty over the region. The South China Sea is a crucial sea gateway through which some 3.4 trillion Dollar in trade passes annually, according to C N B C.

Boeing planes around the world are being grounded… Except in the United States. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Read more here: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/12/uk-has-grounded-all-boeing-737-max-aircraft.html "Aviation regulators from China to Britain have grounded Boeing 737 Max 8 planes, joining a growing list of countries suspending the plane’s operation and banning it from their airspace after the second deadly crash of the popular aircraft in less than five months. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency on Tuesday said it “is taking every step necessary to ensure the safety of passengers.” Its decision not only applies to airlines within the European Union but by operators outside of the region flying to or from the region, the regulator said. Several European countries took similar action earlier Tuesday, a day after the Federal Aviation Administration said it did not see a reason to ground the best-selling Boeing jet. On Sunday, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people aboard. That came after a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max 8 plunged into the Java Sea in October, killing the 189 people aboard." F-35, MH-53E Sea Dragon,MV-22 and the UK Supercarrier in Action(A new method for landing an F-35) A new method for landing an F-35 Lightning fighter jet on a ship has been carried out for the first time on board the U.K.’s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. The first rolling vertical landing was undertaken by test pilot Peter Wilson on the weekend. Previously the jets have only conducted vertical landings, hovering by the side of the ship before moving sideways over the deck and gently lowering down. A rolling landing however requires the jet to make a more conventional landing approach, approaching the ship from behind at speed, before using thrust from its nozzle and lift created by air over the wings to touch down and gently come to a stop. US aircraft have landed on HMS Queen Elizabeth in another successful flight trial. The MH-53E Sea Dragon, the largest helicopter in the US Navy, and the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor landed as part of ongoing flight trials for the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier which is on track to be deployed in 2021. The successful landings determine that the helicopters are now ready to be operational on HMS Queen Elizabeth and will enable the aircraft handlers of the UK vessel to work with the US aircraft. #UK Supercarrier in Action source:https://goo.gl/bgA7Md

It was one of the most widely used seaplanes of World War II. Catalinas served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in the air forces and navies of many other nations. During World War II, PBYs were used in anti-submarine warfare, patrol bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions (especially air-sea rescue), and cargo transport. The PBY was the most numerous aircraft of its kind and the last active military PBYs were not retired from service until the 1980s. The U.K. has joined Australia and Singapore in banning from its airspace the model of Boeing aircraft that crashed on Sunday in Ethiopia and six months ago in Indonesia. Bans by civil aviation authorities or airlines have grounded nearly 40 per cent of the world's in-service fleet of 737 Max 8s. Mary Schiavo is a pilot and former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation who says the Max 8 should be grounded. She is also a lawyer who represents families of airline crashes, and does have current litigation against Boeing.
