Tomorrow ye will get your pay And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her Oh leave her, Johnny, leave her. For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. oh the winds were foul and the sea ran high Leave her, Johnny, leave her. She shipped green and none went by And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her Oh leave her, Johnny, leave her. Guitar: The Flying Dutchman (Including lyrics and chords)

03:56
I was introduced to this song a couple of weeks ago by subscriber "BIGFATBALDLouis" who described it as a "bad ass sea shanty"! It is from the repertoire of a group called The Jolly Rogers and appears on their album "XXV". Wikipedia has the following about the group: The Jolly Rogers are a pirate-themed Renaissance folk group who perform at Renaissance fairs in the Midwest United States since 1991. Their high-energy performances of traditional sea shanties, humorous songs and improvisational comedy skits are big crowd pleasers wherever they go. The band's music also makes regular appearances on Marc Gunn's Renaissance Festival Music Podcast, and came in 9th place for top music performers in the podcast's First Annual Renaissance Festival Performer Awards in 2005. This is my own interpretation of the song with chords worked out with the help of Riffstation.

Learn "Shenandoah" or "Oh Shenandoah" fast with our ukulele tutorial with onscreen lyrics and chord diagrams. This classic American folk song is featured in our upcoming book "21 Easy Ukulele Folk Songs". The song appears to have originated with Canadian and American fur traders who traveled down the Missouri River in canoes, and has developed several different sets of lyrics. Some lyrics to the Oneida chief Shenandoah and a canoe-going trader who wants to marry his daughter. By the mid 1800s versions of the song had become a sea shanty heard or sung by sailors in various parts of the world. The song is popular in local organizations such as Shenandoah University, Southern Virginia University, Washington and Lee University, and the Virginia Military Institute. It's been covered by Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, Arlo Guthrie, The Kingston Trio, Van Morrison, Keith Jarett, Jerry Garcia, Bing Crosby, Glen Campbell, Harry Belafonte, and numerous classical singers and choirs. 12-string Guitar: The Worst Old Ship (Including lyrics and chords)

Another request from Ken Shuttlesworth for yet another shanty used in "The Assassin's Creed" games series. This one is a much gentler shanty and lends itself to an instrumental accompaniment, so I have forced myself past the pain barrier caused by the tendinitis in my shoulders to play my 12-string. (Actually once the guitar is in position, the pain is negligible.) http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! Spanish Ladies (Farewell and Adieu): guitar lesson for beginners

03:24
Spanish Ladies is an old folk song, sea shanty, sailor-thingy but I think it rocks. It's about English sailors who hooked up with Spanish girls when they were docked in Spanish harbours during the England-Spain alliance against France. When they got orders to return to England they had to leave their girlfriends behind and find their way back in the fog through the Channel. If you have a Facebook page, please visit https://www.facebook.com/Thevioletmoonduo it is me and my daughter's band website - thanks. Maybe you could like it :) Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish Ladies, Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain; For we've received orders for to sail for ol' England, But we hope in a short time to see you again. We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors, We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt sea. Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England; From Ushant to Scilly is thirty five leagues. We hove our ship to with the wind from sou'west, boys We hove our ship to, deep soundings to take; 'Twas forty-five fathoms, with a white sandy bottom, So we squared our main yard and up channel did make. We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors, We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt sea. Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England; From Ushant to Scilly is thirty five leagues. The first land we sighted was called the Dodman, Next Rame Head off Plymouth, off Portsmouth the Wight; We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlight and Dover, And then we bore up for the South Foreland light. We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors, We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt sea. Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England; From Ushant to Scilly is thirty five leagues. Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor, And all in the Downs that night for to lie; Let go your shank painter, let go your cat stopper! Haul up your clewgarnets, let tacks and sheets fly! We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors, We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt sea. Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England; From Ushant to Scilly is thirty five leagues. Now let ev'ry man drink off his full bumper, And let ev'ry man drink off his full glass; We'll drink and be jolly and drown melancholy, And here's to the health of each true-hearted lass. We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors, We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt sea. Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England; From Ushant to Scilly is thirty five leagues.

12-string Guitar: Billy Boy (Northumberland Sea Shanty) (Including lyrics and chords)

01:42
On the site http://www.contemplator.com this is attributed to be the Irish version of Billy Boy, but when I checked for more verses, I found an extra verse which is verse 4 in this video. It begins with the line 'Can she make an Irish Stew?', which may well be why it is referred to as Irish, but it also mentions a 'gairdle cake' and 'Singin Hinnies' and on further investigation, I found this version which is attributed as a Northumberland Sea Shanty. Although I have sung it and written it out in plain English, the lyrics I copied were written in a Northumberland dialect, so I think it is more likely to originate there, though like so many popular songs of this sort, it no doubt was claimed by many areas. A gairdle cake (girdle) is a griddle cake, and Singin' Hinnies are a species of Sally Lunn teacake only larger. Usually plentifully besprinkled with currants, in which case it is designated by pitmen as "Singin' Hinnies wi' smäa co fizzors" (small coal fizzers.) kittl'd is the dialect word for tickled. I have just produced a book of songs under the title "50 Songs from the 'threelegsoman' collection". Guitar: Leave Her Johnny (Including lyrics and chords)

03:06
The game series 'The Assassin's Creed' seems to have created a revival of interest in shanties. I.L. Donaldson has requested this one which he says is an English version of a German song "Haltet stets zusammen" and is indeed one used in the aforesaid 'Assassin's Creed'. I know it from the likes of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Spinners and The Dubliners and it is one that somehow managed to elude my memory since I have been uploading songs here on YouTube until Ian reminded me of it. There are many versions to be found with numerous verses, so I have chosen only a small number of verses for my own interpretation. It is a shanty that the sailors would most likely have sung towards the end of their journey. In the annotations I have shown for the first verse and chorus the shantyman's line in blue and the crews response in pink, everyone singing the chorus again shown in pink.

Guitar: Blow The Man Down (Including lyrics and chords)

03:39
Another sea shanty. Like all such, it would be sung to help the sailors keep time in whatever job they were doing. The following is an extract from Wikipedia regarding 'The Blackball Line' which is mentioned in this song as well as others: The Blackball line Starting in 1818 , ships of the Blackball line began regularly scheduled trips between Britain and America. These "packet ships" (named for their delivery of mail "packets") were infamous for keeping to their disciplined schedules. This often involved harsh treatment of seamen and earned the ships the nickname, "bloodboat". 12-string Guitar: The Last Shanty (Including lyrics and chords)

02:52
The Last Shanty is another song from "Shanties and Sea Songs". It was written by Tom Lewis, who like Cyril Tawney served in the Royal Navy from 1959 to 1983 mostly in diesel powered submarines. Wikipedia has the following to say about him: He developed his interest in sea shanties while frequenting the Howff Folk Song Club of Dunfermline, Scotland, in the 1960s, and began to perform at clubs and festivals in his off-time. On completing his naval service, he emigrated to Salmo, British Columbia, Canada, "to be somewhere completely different to a large port city". In 1987, he began to record and to tour, due to popular demand. Most versions of this song that I found on YouTube are sung A Cappella, but I felt it might suit a guitar accompaniment, so have done so in my version. http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! The Last Shanty - Celtic Connection (With GBS) - Lyrics ,

03:00
Well my father often told me when I was just a lad, A sailors life was very hard, The food was always bad. But now I've joined the navy am abord a Man o' war, Now I found a sailor aint a sailor anymore. Don't haul on the ropes, Don't climb up the mast, If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore, A sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore. Well the killy cover mess says we have it soft, it wasn't like that in his day, when we were up aloft. We like our bunks and sleeping bags, whats a hammok for? swinging from the deck head or lying on the floor. Don't haul on the ropes, Don't climb up the mast, If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore, A sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore. Well they gave us an engine that first went up and down, then with more technology the engine went around. We now steam and desil but whats it mainly for? A stoker aint a stoker with a shovel anymore. Don't haul on the ropes, Don't climb up the mast, If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore, a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore. Well they gave us a norestump so we could do it right, they gave us a radio we signal day and night. We know our code and cypher so whats the semaphore? A bump n glass a dozen aint a toss anymore. Don't haul on the ropes, Don't climb up the mast, If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore, a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore. Two cans of beer a day and thats you're bleeding lot. But now we have an extra one becuase we stopped the tot. So, we'll put on our civvie clothes for another run ashore, a sailors just a sailor, just like he was before. Don't haul on the ropes, Don't climb up the mast, If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore, a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore. Don't haul on the ropes, Don't climb up the mast, If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. My sea shanty videos seem to be quite popular, so here's another one. The first version of this that I heard was by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem which I think they sang unaccompanied with Paddy Clancy taking the lead and the others joining in with the chorus parts, just as it would have been done on board of a packet ship.

12-string Guitar: Randy Dandy O (Including lyrics and chords)

03:06
"Randy Dandy O" is another shanty used in the "Assassin's Creed". Like most of the shanties used in that game series, it is a traditional 'capstan shanty', one of Stan Hugill's collection. The chorus is: Heave a pawl, oh, heave away, Way, ay, roll an' go! The anchor's on board an' the cable's all stored, Timme rollickin' randy dandy O! I have only sung the chorus after each of the first two verses, then left it out as I felt it is not really necessary to sing a chorus when alternate lines are a refrain common to all verses as with most shanties. Mentioned in the chorus, is a 'pawl' which is : a pivoted tongue or sliding bolt on one part of a machine that is adapted to fall into notches or interdental spaces on another part so as to permit motion in only one direction. In the case of a capstan, long bars are inserted in slots around the capstan head like spokes in a wheel and the sailors would push against these bars leaning their chests against the bar to turn it and pushing with their legs. A cable (or chain) wrapped around the capstan would then pull up the heavy weight to which it was attached, probably an anchor and the pawl would prevent the capstan spinning backwards as they turned it. Each click as the pawl slotted into place was expressed as 'heaving a pawl'. "glad-rags" mentioned in the next to the last verse refers to the sails of the ship, not the sailors' best clothes. Vallipo Bay would be Valparaiso, the destination for many ships sailing around 'The Horn', which is the southern tip of South America. http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! Today's song from The ToneWay Mountain Music Collection is a sea shanty which coincidentally fits in with a request from one of my subscribers, Hemmi Hedman, who asked for more shanties. This one is a variant of The Mermaid and the tune is very reminiscent of the tune of another variant, The Holy Ground.

The Pirate Shanty

06:37
Buy this album: https://worldwideadventurers.bandcamp.com/album/adventure-stories-volume-ii-pirates LYRICS I am not a pirate, but I long to be, Sailing by the stars across the seven seas, Living with no earthly cares, my mates and me— The envy of all worldly men, who are not free. A song to sing for beggars, a song to sing for saints, A song to sing for wealthy men all wrapped and bound in chains! Our treasure's not in gold, or in our piety. Our wealth is in an answered call, the longing of the sea! Stormy oceans carry us to lands we've never known, To mysteries and buried secrets from the tales of old. So hoist the sail and raise the flag, we do not stop for night. We'll ride the wild winds and waves until the morning's light! In smuggler's caves and tavern halls, we live by no man's rules. We fly the colors of the living, free and proud and true! We set out on the ocean blue to escape tyranny. We'll keep our merry hearts alive so long we roam the sea. A man once walked along the shore, and called he out to me, "I see you are a fisherman, a lover of the sea. I know this world's a wretched place, but if you'll follow me I'll take all of your burdens... and pirates we shall be!" Yo ho, yo ho! Hope is now before us, and misery at aft. We could not care the lesser for the men who say, "You're daft!" So let the howling winds blow in and take hold of the mast. Release the wheel and all your sins, for you are free at last! "Swab the deck, my clever lad, and listen close to me. Learn my ways, and soon one day a captain you shall be. Climb the rigging, mount the nest, and say, what can you see?" "A fleet upon the starboard side... in battle we shall meet!" "Load the cannons, raise the flag, and take hold of your heart! A proper man of courage does not flee before the start. Do not fear when death is near, when doom is night at hand. Your end marks the beginning of a life in fairer lands!" All day the battle rages, and on into the night. With clashing swords and pistol shots, upon the decks we fight! We match our wits and cannonballs with the finest of their fleet. Their admiral walks the plank in the shame of his defeat. So raise a drink to plunder, and lift a toast for spoils. Cheer good men - in bravery, the enemy we've foiled! Pour another round and we will sing a song of joy. When next we make our port the folk will say, "Victors—ahoy!" We moor upon an isle of wealthy fools and knaves Who drink all night and sleep all day on the labor of their slaves. When the sun has set, we break off all their chains And share with them our plunder, and now free men they are made! We hole up in the tavern with our new crewmen and mates. Soon those rich folks come a calling for their run aways! The barman sends them off with ale, saying, "Go, drink your sway!" But when the rest have gone, one aging wealthy man does stay. "I was once a young lad, sailing by the charts. I did not savor wind, nor water, nor admire the stars. Now I have grown old and frail, and do not journey far. I only long to sail the seas once more to find my heart." Well, come aboard and voyage long, we make for unmapped shores. Ride the stormy seas with us, you'll find that soul of yourn. Leave your wealth behind you, and your bitter scorn. Make your home with slaves and sinners—then you'll be reborn. Yo ho, yo ho!

Guitar: Lowlands Away My John (Including lyrics and chords)

03:03
A request from Billy Tippie has put me on to this shanty which I have not performed before today. It is fairly unusual for seamen were not usually sentimental, but this one is. The shantyman is singing about a lost love, but in the end recalls that he is at sea and working. This one would I believe have been a pump shanty. 'My John' was just a way sailors addressed each other and had no other connotation.

Guitar: Haul On The Bowline (Including lyrics and chords)

01:20
Haul On The Bowline is an old sea shanty which I have not done before, and comes as a request from Hemmi Hedman who is a fan of sea shanties. The site on which I found the lyrics has the following footnote about the song: Short-drag shanty. This may be one of the oldest around: The bowline was a line used to pull the weather edge of a square sail as far out to windward as possible when reaching. It was largely made obsolete by the introduction of staysails in the early eighteenth century. I am familiar with this shanty having heard it sung on an album by either The Spinners, or The Dubliners back in the 1960s, and I have added the final verse in my own interpretation from my recollection of that version. The chord progression is of my own devising.

12-string Guitar: The Yankee Ship (Including lyrics and chords)

01:32
The Yankee Ship is a 'long drag' shanty which again I found on the site Shanties and Sea Songs (http://shanty.rendance.org/). According to Wikipedia: Long-drag shanty (also called a "halyard shanty"): Sung with the job of hauling on halyards to hoist, over an extended period, topsail or topgallant yards. Usually there are two pulls per chorus as in Blow, boys, blow. http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! Guitar: A-Roving (Including lyrics and chords)

03:33
This is a traditional sea-shanty. The first two verses are from a version sung by Harry Belafonte way back in the 1960s. Verses 3 and 4 I got from a radio programme called 'Singing Together' and is probably the same as would have been sung by 'The Spinners' from Liverpool. The final verse is one I made up tonight just for fun! (Well that is how these shanties evolved, each verse being sung by one man (the shanty man) the others joining in with the chorus. As the job in hand was usually a long one, the more verses the better, so the shanty-man would add to verses he had learned from others.)

As promised, here is my guitar/singing version of the sea shanty A Long Time Ago. The version I recall hearing of this was done by the Spinners, but like all shanties, there are probably many variants. 12-string Guitar: Poor Old Man (Including lyrics and chords)

01:45
Also known as Poor Old Horse, or The Dead Horse Shanty, this is the second of the shanties requested by Ken Shuttlesworth and is again one used in the Assassin's Creed games. Sailors lived a hard life at sea and having spent so much time away from land they would soon spend all their money when back on shore usually on wine, women and tobacco. To get more money they would have to sign on a ship again, but needed money to buy clothes, tobacco etc for the voyage. The ship's paymaster would give him a month's pay as an advance in the form of a credit slip which he would in turn give to a creditor, a tailor or a boarding-house master who would supply his needs. The creditor, tailor or boarding-house master would cash in the advance so for the first month the sailor felt he was working not for himself, but his creditors and considered himself to be a 'work horse'. So the horse referred to in the song is really a sailor. To indicate that the shanty man would sing the lines and the crew the responses, for the first verse I have shown them in two different colours in the annotations. http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! 12-string Guitar: Tom's Gone To Hilo (Including lyrics and chords)

04:29
Another shanty from the site Shanties and Sea Songs (http://shanty.rendance.org/). Roud 481, Stan Hugill wrote in his book Shanties from the Seven Seas: Tom's (or Johnny's) Gone to Hilo was a tops'l halyard song, and one which never found favour with the afterguard, as it took too long to hoist a yard to it on account of the slow and lethargic way in which it was sung by a good shantyman. It was rather difficult to sing correctly, but even so it was popular with the crowd, particularly for heavy lifts. As in the shanty 'Bold Riley' which I uploaded a couple of days ago, in this one, the sailor's girl gets his half-pay. Hilo was most probably the nitrate port of 'Ilo' in Peru. http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! 12-string Guitar: Bold Riley (Including lyrics and chords)

03:30
I have been checking out some more sea shanties, this time from a site called: Shanties and Sea Songs, (http://shanty.rendance.org/) though some of them may well be used in the Assassin's Creed series too. Other versions of this one have their verses in a different order and use a slightly different refrain after the first line of the verses, but I am using the ones I found on the site. Slightly unusual for a shanty, this one has both the standard 'shantyman/crew alternating lines but also has a chorus sung by all. "Whitestocking time" referred to in verse two is explained as follows by 'Barry' on a thread on Mudcat.org: When sailors would go off to sea half their months pay would be picked up at the shipping office by their sweetie who'd in more cases than not be their in port whore. The women would dress up all respectful & go down to the shipping office in their Sunday best sporting white stockings, hence "White Stocking Day". http://bit.ly/1aKkBv9 If you're looking to improve the way you play the Guitar you NEED to see this! 12-string Guitar: All For Me Grog (Including lyrics and chords)

04:01
All for me grog, is a traditional sea shanty about getting drunk and spending too much money on beer, tobacco, and lassies, or according to my source, namely Soodlum's Irish Ballad Book, 'this popular song is a celebration of the three vices: wine, women and song and the cost of overindulgence.' I cannot understand how I missed this in the past being one of the Dubliners' songs and having a relatively easy tune to follow, but it had eluded me until today.

Guitar: Leave Her Shipmate, Leave Her (Including lyrics and chords)

03:01
The lyrics for this song were presented to me by a new YouTube friend, Barry Dixon, asking me to help him by collaborating in a project dear to his heart. Barry produces videos relating to Royal Navy ships and what happens to them when they are decommissioned. Barry has re-worked a well known shanty "Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her" to tell the story of The Regent, and this can be found at: https://youtu.be/OrbVonxVlaQ. (As well as using this song, Barry also used my harmonica version of Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her) For those of you who like me do not know the naval terms, Barry kindly included a glossary for me: STON = Supply & Transport Officer – NAVY 'bow' - the pointy end of the shiP 'Op' - short for Operation (Op Granby was the name for the Iraq War). 'Guzz' - sailors name for Plymouth~Devonport ( 'Alang' - the breakers yard in India 'down South' - refers to the Falklands.

2265. Poor Old Man (Traditional Sea Shanty) - with Axel

02:07
This sea shanty, also known as "The Dead Horse Shanty" or "Poor Old Horse," originated as part of a ceremony that used to take place on longer voyages at the end of the first month at sea, called "paying off the dead horse". When a boarding master supplied a sailor to a ship, he received an advance from the sailor's pay, so the sailor had to work for some weeks or months before he began to earn money for himself. This was known as "working off the dead horse." To celebrate, after thirty days, sailors would sometimes make a horse-figure from rags and tar, hoist it to the yardarm, cut it loose and let it drift away on the sea, a ritual known as "burying the dead horse." A good captain would break out a ration of rum at this time. As the ceremony gradually died out the song was put to use as a regular halyard shanty. For this song I am ably assisted by my eight-year-old grandson, Axel. Lyrics and chords of the song can be found here: http://www.raymondfolk.com/page/Poor+Old+Man+%28Sea+shanty%29 Here is a playlist of all the videos starring Axel: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=PLCi_Xcl2_fAWkJYtMr_Ljoq8qCsEhjCjb And a playlist of all my a capella songs: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=E81659B9EA983BB2 For lyrics and chords of all my songs, please see my website: http://raymondfolk.wikifoundry.com
