Heat olive oil in a skillet on medium high heat. When oil is hot, add red pepper flakes. Red pepper flakes add a nice heat, but substitute fresh peppers, or even a little cayenne if you like. Add garlic and saute for 1 minute. Use as much garlic as you like. I prefer lots of garlic. I literally used an entire bulb. It seems like a lot, but the oil and garlic are gonna taste great when paired with thick slices of fresh bread. Add the shrimp, and continue sauteing on medium high heat. Once the shrimp hits the pan, it'll only take about 3 minutes to cook. Don't overcook the shrimp; they will become rubbery if cooked overly long. Add paprika, and salt and pepper to taste. Saute shrimp until just cooked, when shrimp begin to color and curl, then remove the skillet from the heat. Add lemon juice and fresh chopped parsley. Mix well and serve in a bowl with thick slices of fresh bread. Give this garlic shrimp recipe a try and let me know what you think...and bon appétit! "Your Call" by Kevin MacLeod. Shrimps and Cleaners - Reef Life of the Andaman - Part 21
Shrimps and symbiotic cleaners. Part 21 of my DVD, "Reef Life of the Andaman", available at http://www.bubblevision.com/marine-life-DVD.htm or view the whole 2-hour video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ncUVddkK3Q In this video we look at how different types of shrimp feed, and how some shrimp and fish clean a host fish in a mutually-beneficial symbiotic relationship. First we see a pair of harlequin shrimp, Hymenocera picta, feeding on a velvety sea star, Leiaster speciosus, at Koh Ha in Thailand's southern islands. The small shrimps feed exclusively on starfish. We then encounter a peacock mantis shrimp, Odontodactylus scyllarus, attempting to smash an oyster with its claws which have evolved into powerful clubs. Skunk cleaner shrimps, Lysmata amboinensis, form mutual symbiotic relationships with marine creatures such as giant morays. The shrimps clean the larger host so the so the shrimp keeps itself fed while the host keeps itself clean and healthy. We even see a skunk cleaner shrimp cleaning a scuba diver's teeth! Cleaner wrasse perform a similar role. We see bluestreak cleaner wrasse, Labroides dimidiatus, cleaning the mouths of variable-lined fusiliers, Caesio varilineata, at Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, and cleaning inside the gill of a starry puffer, Arothron stellatus, at Staghorn Reef on Racha Yai island. We also see bicolor cleaner wrasse, Labroides bicolor, cleaning a teira batfish, a yellowspotted trevally and a giant moray eel. Finally we examine how the cleaner's attentions are not always welcome. A honeycomb moray, Gymnothorax favagenius, is irritated by a rock cleaner shrimp, and a blackspotted puffer, Arothron nigropunctatus, is annoyed by cleaner wrasse. One even bites a pharaoh cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis. It could be that these fish are false cleanerfish, Aspidontus taeniatus, a sabre-toothed blenny which has evolved to mimic the bluestreak cleaner wrasse, but actually feeds off the flesh of its hosts. When they checked the device they found that the 9ft Great White Shark they had tagged just months ago had actually been eaten and digested by something. Researchers were baffled because the tracker showed that the creature that had eaten the great white shark had a body temperature that was too low for a killer whale, but too high for it to be another shark. Nearly 15 years later, the prevailing theory is that the 9ft great white shark was actually eaten by another super-massive cannibalistic great white shark, which sounds like the title of a Sci-Fi channel movie. But no one knows for certain just WHAT gigantic creature might have eaten that 9ft shark.

It can take 12-18 months for mercury to pass through the body, so women who may become pregnant should also work hard to avoid mercury. The nervous system and kidneys are the main targets of mercury. Just how dangerous are these marine reptiles? I have traveled to Queensland, Australia on a quest to learn about sea snakes. Here on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, sea snakes are fairly common. Lets go see if we can find one. I hit the water, grab my camera and head towards the sea floor. Today I’m diving on a little seamount called a coral Bommie. It’s a mini-mountain of coral sticking up from the bottom, but not quite reaching the surface. Near the top of the Bommie, thousands of small fish feed on plankton passing by in the current, but they stay close to the reef, because they are being watched by a big school of jacks who are on the prowl for food themselves. The bommie is covered in healthy coral that provides lots of nooks and crannies for the fish to hide if they need cover. On the other side of the bommie, a large school of snappers are also looking for something to eat, and keeping a safe distance from the jacks. As I swim along at the base of the bommie, I’m keeping my eyes open for a snake-like animal. The coral looks healthy and a Spinecheek anemonefish gives me a quick glance from the safety of her host anemone. But I keep scanning the bottom and at last I have found my quarry: an olive sea snake, the most common species around the Great Barrier Reef. It’s swimming along the bottom doing the same thing everything else is doing—looking for food. The sea snake is closely related to a land snake, except it has adapted for life underwater. When a sea snake flicks its tongue, it’s getting rid of excess salt secreted by special glands in its mouth. Sea snakes live exclusively in the ocean, but since they’re reptiles, their kidneys can’t deal with too much excess salt in their blood. A sea snake gets around with a flattened section of tail that looks like an oar and serves as a fin. It looks just like an eel when it swims, undulating its body and getting propulsion from that flattened tail. Although sea snakes prefer to eat fish, eels and shrimp, these snappers aren’t at all afraid of the sea snake, because they are way too big for the sea snake to bite. This snake is heading for the surface to grab a breath of air. A sea snake, just like a land snake, has lungs and must breathe air to survive. It can hold its breath up to 3 hours during a dive. Recent research has shown that some sea snakes also can absorb a little bit of oxygen directly from the water through their skin, which is probably why a breath can last so long. After spending a minute at the surface breathing, the sea snake comes back down to the bottom. It’s poking around, looking for holes where it might corner a fish or shrimp. It sticks its head into the holes, hoping to get lucky. The sea snake is most closely related to the Cobra on land, and its venom is quite similar to cobra venom, but considerably more potent. If it manages to grab a fish, the venom will kill it in seconds. Sea snakes quite often take a rest on the bottom, sleeping as they hold their breath. I use the opportunity to sneak up on one. In spite of their fearsome venom, sea snakes are very timid and not particularly aggressive. Although this one is obviously not thrilled about being picked up, it doesn’t try to bite me. And when I let go, it just swims away. I find another one and can’t resist the opportunity to show the flattened tail section. Swim, be free! Although the sea snake is one of the most venomous animals in the world, you’re not very likely to be bitten by one. There are 62 known species of sea snakes and they live all around the tropical Indo-Pacific. I found this banded sea snake in the Philippines. They like nice warm tropical water because they are cold-blooded, like all reptiles. If the water gets too cold, they get lethargic. So, no matter what you might think of snakes, sea snakes are timid and shy animals that represent almost no threat at all to people, even though they produce some of the most powerful venom in the world.

Seafood Pizza – Grilled Pizza with Lobster and Shrimp #seafoodpizza #grilledpizza #howtobbqright Grilled Seafood Pizza Last we were in the Bahamas for the Best Steak Contest in the world thanks to Grill Grates - https://www.grillgrate.com/?aff=13 One of the events was a pizza party on the beach. Chef Michael and crew were making fresh, hot pizzas right there in the sand and my fave the local lobster and shrimp pizza with a white sauce. For this recipe I picked up several lobster tails and a pound of raw gulf shrimp from my local grocery. I opted for a simple pizza dough recipe but a store bought dough would work in a pinch. The next step was the “white sauce”; it’s my take on an easy Alfredo sauce which is butter, flour, heavy cream, and parmesan. The dough and the sauce can be made ahead of time. For the seafood fire up a grill (I used my Big Green Egg) and bring it up to 450-500 degrees. Split the tops of the lobster and loosen the meat with your fingers. Skewer the shrimp and drizzle the lobster and shrimp skewers with olive oil. Season everything with a blend of Garlic Salt, Parsley, and Crushed Red Pepper and grill until the shrimp and lobster are no longer translucent. It only takes 4-5 minutes for the shrimp and 8-10 for the lobster. Remove the shrimp from the skewers and the lobster tails from the shells and course chop everything. Toss together and reserve until building the pizzas. Place a ceramic pizza stone on the hot grill and allow it to come up to temperature. Form the dough balls into a pizza shape on a floured surface and ladle on the white sauce. Spread shredded mozzarella over the pizza and top with the lobster and shrimp. Season with another good pinch of the Garlic Salt mixture and drizzle with a little olive oil. Place the pizza on a the stone and cook until the top is bubbly and the crust is golden brown. Grilled Seafood Pizza Ingredients: - 1lb Gulf Shrimp Raw (peeled and deveined) - 4 Lobster Tails - 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil divided - 2 Tablespoons Garlic Salt - 1 teaspoon Dried Parsley - 1 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper - 2 cups White Pizza Sauce* (recipe to follow) - 2 10” Pizza Dough Balls* or prepared crusts from store (recipe to follow) - 12oz Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Directions: 1. Prepare Big Green Egg or other bbq grill for indirect cooking at 450-500 degrees. 2. Place shrimp on wooden skewers (soak skewers in water to prevent burning). Use kitchen shears to split lobster tails down the top. Gently work the meat away from the shell using your fingers 3. Drizzle the shrimp and lobster with olive oil. Combine the garlic salt, parsley, and red pepper in a small bowl and season the shrimp/lobster with several pinches of the seasoning blend. 4. Cook the shrimp and lobster on the grill until no longer translucent. Shrimp about 4-5 minutes, lobster about 8 minutes. 5. Remove the shrimp from the skewers and the lobster tails from the shell. Chop into bite size pieces and toss together. Place meat in a small bowl. 6. Place dough (*recipe below) on a lightly floured surface and form into a thin pizza crust. Use your hands or a roller and if the dough tears pinch it back together. You can also substitute a store bought pizza crust if you prefer. 7. Carefully transfer the pizza dough onto a sheet of butcher paper. Ladle white sauce (*recipe below) onto the crust and top with shredded mozzarella cheese. Add the shrimp and lobster meat and season with a pinch of garlic salt seasoning blend and a drizzle of olive oil. 8. Place the pizza on a ceramic cooking stone and cook until the crust is brown and the cheese is hot and bubbly. *White Sauce: - 1/2 stick Butter - 1/4 cup All Purpose Flour - 2 cups Heavy Cream - 1 cup Parmesan Cheese grated - 1 teaspoon Salt - 1/2 teaspoon Ground White Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon Granulated Garlic Melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk for 2-3 minutes. Slowly whisk in heated heavy cream and bring to simmer. Add parmesan cheese and seasoning. *Pizza Dough - 3/4 cup warm water (100-110 degrees) - 1 teaspoon Active Dry Yeast1 teaspoon Sugar - 2 cups All Purpose Flour1 teaspoon Salt - 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil Add water, yeast, and sugar and allow to dissolve for 5 minutes until bubbles form. Add 1/2 flour and mix on low 2 min. Scrape sides, add remaining flour and mix for 3 min. Scrape sides, increase speed and mix 3 min. Place dough on a floured surface, knead dough gently and form a ball. Grease bowl with olive oil and gently move the dough in the bowl to oil the outside. Cover with towel and place in a warm place to rise for 1 hour. This is how to made your baits in a delicious meal! :-) Simple way to prepare risotto. Wine, anchovies and Parmesan are key ingredients for this meal. Ingredients ( 2 person): 400 gr shrimp 400 gr squid 1/2 onion 1/4 celery 1/2 carrot chili pepper 3 cloves garlic 2 dl white wine 500 ml vegetable bouillon 1 tbsp Parmesan cheese 50 gr butter 2 anchovies 300 gr rice parsley basil leaves lemon zest olive oil Salt INSTRUCTIONS Slice your fresh squid to rings Boil 500ml of water for 3 minutes with a vegetable bouillon cube Chop 1/4 of celery root, 1/2 carrot and 1/2 onion into little cubes. Dice chili peppers and add to taste. Add olive oil in the pan and add 3 garlic cloves, fry until brown and remove Add diced vegetables to the hot olive oil and fry until onions are glazed. Add rice into the pan and stir Add anchovies Add white wine and lemon zest Add vegetable bouillon liquid to cover the rice In a larger pot add olive oil and fry prepared squid rings for a minute Add fresh shrimps and grind in the garlic you've fried just before When shrimp turns red, add butter and stir until butter melts in Add white wine and salt and let it simmer for 5 minutes Add the rice and vegetables to the mix and cover with vegetable bouillon liquid. Keep adding bouillon liquid until rice is cooked. Once the rice is cooked, add Parmesan cheese and finely chopped parsley. Garnish with finely chopped fresh basil leaves. ...add lemon to taste :). NOAA researchers with the Okeanos Explorer expedition recently encountered a glowing shrimp with some crazy antennae.  Not only are the extensions enormous, they have a very pronounced bend to them.  As a result, it looks like the shrimp is carting around a pair of dangling chopsticks.  Such developments are fairly common at great depths.  Due to the dark environment, denizens of the deep need means other than sight to navigate their surroundings.

Are your snails suffering from pitted shells? Would you rather not spend extra money on expensive supplements, foods, and crushed coral? Why not recycle your breakfast scraps! Why do this? Over time, aquarium water has a tendency to become soft and acidic. If you have very hard water, this may not be a problem, but if you have soft water and have plants in your aquarium, this will happen to you. Animals like snails and shrimp need high levels of calcium in their diet to allow for health shell growth. Poor shell growth in snails results in pitted shells and death. Adding egg shells to your aquarium provides something for your pets to chew on for calcium. They will also leech calcium into the water and help stabilize pH as well as make the water harder, over time. You can see the evidence if you take a close look at them, so that’s exactly what we did for this episode of Deep Look, an ultra-high definition wildlife video series produced by KQED and PBS DIgital Studios. “Kids love them,” said Jonathan Wright, a professor of biology at Pomona College who studies the charismatic creepy-crawlies. After all, who hasn’t delighted as a youth in annoying a pill bug until it defensively curls up into a little armored ball? Some adventurous foragers even eat pill bugs. Their flavor is said to resemble other crustaceans, earning pill bugs the moniker “wood shrimp”. “I personally haven’t tasted one,” said Wright, “but I’ve spoken to people that have. They didn’t get a particularly high approval rating. Pill bugs have a lot of soil in their gut.” They may not be ready to replace shrimp as an appetizer, but according to Wright, the evidence of the pill bug’s evolutionary lineage lies underneath its shell. --- What are pill bugs related to? Whenever we go out to eat, he has to have it. And he’s always posting some shrimp meal or dish on his Facebook page. So a few nights ago, when he ordered a bunch of shrimp for dinner, my other friend, Howard asked, “hey, aren’t you concerned with your cholesterol, eating so much shrimp all the time? We’re not 20 years old anymore” Frank, my shrimp eating friend replied back by saying, “I don’t have this every day, probably 3-4x weekly. Besides, you only live once… you worry too much.” and then he proceeded to order a glass of beer. So then, Howard, our “anti-shrimp” friend turned to me and ask, “what do you think Sam?... Do you eat shrimp? Isn’t it bad for your health?” Now I’m stuck between two friends I’ve known for almost 20 years. However, the truth is the truth, so let me share with you, what I basically told my friends. Shrimp And Cholesterol Yes, shrimp has a lot of cholesterol. A small 3 oz serving has about 200 mgs of cholesterol. On paper, that’s as much cholesterol as you need for ONE day, not counting all the other sources of food. And yes, shrimp also raises your cholesterol levels - both total and LDL, the “bad” lipoprotein. However, it ALSO raises your “good” HDL1 and for some people, even more than the bad, LDL … So the end result is a better ratio, which is the more important factor. Do I Eat Shrimp? The answer is, no. I never order it or buy it. If it’s at a party, I’ll have a couple pieces one in a rare while, but the bottom line is -- NO, I don’t eat shrimp. It’s not so much because of the cholesterol. Because I do have cholesterol in my diet. It’s important to do so, at least in some amounts and it varies from person to person. Shrimp and other shellfish are “bottom feeders”. Basically, they eat “junk” at the bottom of the ocean. I know that this is a controversial topic, and there are healthy fish such as Sardines, which are also classified as “bottom feeders”. However, my personal preference is to not eat these bottom feeders - shrimp and other shellfish included. Shellfish, including shrimp, are classified as one of the top eight food allergies in the US, along with peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, milk and soy2,3. However, most importantly… Shrimp is the most popular seafood in the US. Which also means that over 90% of it gets imported from other countries. Sadly, less than 2% gets inspected by the FDA and US regulatory agencies. What this means that the shrimp is farm-raised in dirty and unhealthy conditions. They’re feed unhealthy food. Imported shrimp, more than any other seafood, has been found to be contaminated with banned chemicals, pesticides and antibiotics. So, these and a few other reasons are why I personally don’t have shrimp But What About My Higher Cholesterol? Now, coming back to the cholesterol topic. IF you are concerned about having high cholesterol, you have a family history of it or you’re taking a cholesterol lowering drug -- then I would reconsidering having Shrimp. Or limit it to once or twice weekly at the most. And make sure it’s wild caught, NOT farm-raised shrimp. ==========================­ Thank you for watching.
