Which theory most supports your own approach to learning in this online course and how?
As discussed in the video I created, connectivism is the learning theory that considers an individualistic based learning approach. Connectivism promotes self-directed learning, in the sense that the individual acquires knowledge from existing resources, without any instruction to do so. The success of an individual under connectivist learning theory is dependent on self-driven exploration. The theory focuses largely in the use of internet technologies such as blogs, websites, applications, and forums, which offer very unique opportunities for individual learning. Ultimately, connectivism suggests that the more connections one makes with others, the more they will learn. Learners in the 21st century have very different and unique learning styles, and connectivism acknowledges the need for a dynamic learning concept.
Connectivism is the learning theory that most supports my learning in this online course – Learning in 140 Characters or Less. As discussed in the video I created to supplement this write up, I find learning in the classroom quite difficult at times, especially in my economics courses. In most classrooms, you are expected to learn a certain way, and typically the way you learn is determined by the professor. Learning in 140 Characters or Less, however, is a course that allows the student to embrace their own learning theory, and for me, that learning theory happens to be connectivism. This online course is focused around the student completing tasks and homework on their own time, in a very collaborative, constructive, and openly communicative way. In this course, we are not expected to read a textbook and regurgitate information within it. Rather, we are expected to utilize all different kinds of learning mediums to understand core concepts of the course. This course utilizes reading materials such as articles, and opinions of our peers; it utilizes visual materials such as internet images, and videos on YouTube; and most importantly, this course revolves around the use of social media to share, view, and analyze all sorts of information.
This course expects us to connect with our peers on Twitter, where we share our ideas between one another, and where we can easily access additional, related information. We utilize a collaborative discussion board on MyLearningSpace in which we, in groups, discuss course concepts on a weekly basis, on our own time frame. Also on a weekly basis, we are expected to access the current module, which delivers a new course concept, with heavy utilization of external resources such as articles, videos, surveys, forums, etc. in which we use to further our knowledge in these concepts and in the course. EM203 – Learning in 140 Characters or Less is a course that allows me to adapt within a dynamic and extensive learning environment, and that is why connectivism supports my approach to learning in this online course.
