Learning Styles & Multiple Intelligences: Theory Integration

Seven different learning styles are described in detail and explained fully for teachers and educators in all grade levels and disciplines. This video gives credit to howard gardner and his work on multiple intelligences. The video also explains why multiple intelligences are so important to classroom teachers. The first learning style mentioned is the interpersonal learner also known as the social learner. That is followed by the opposite type of learner, which is the intrapersonal learner, sometimes called the solitary learner. Other learning styles included are kinesthetic (physical), verbal or linguistic, auditory or aural, logical or mathematical, and visual. Definition and theory surrounding multiples intelligences are provided throughout along with with suggestions that educators can make to improve their instruction for these students. Other videos in teachings in education playlists are designed for classroom teachers to learn as much as they can, grow as a teacher, and advance in their career of education.

What kind of learner are you? - The 4 different learning styles

07:55
Lets take a look at the 4 different learning styles and find out which one you are. Everybody learns in different ways. Have you ever sat looking at a page in the book and just staring at the words and nothing is going in? Well that might be because it’s not your learning style. Its interesting to know what style we are so that we can study and learn better in the future by using techniques that are better suited for us. I mentioned at the start that some people say there are seven learning styles. In this video I covered the main four styles. If your interested what the other three are then here you are. Logical - logical learners prefer to use logic and reasoning Social - social learners like to work in groups or with other people Solitary - solitary learners like to work alone and study by themselves

Different Learning Styles

02:12
Studies have shown that people retain approximately 90% of the information they learn when they teach it to someone else or put it into practice immediately. When they only put it into practice without teaching it, only 75% is retained. Therefore try to practice and teach what you have learned. If you follow these tips you will be well on your way to retaining any new information you may be learning. #2 Script Different Learning Styles learning styles are not fixed; you can develop any learning style you wish to make yours. The following is an example of the most popular styles used today. Visual Visual learners absorb information more easily by seeing it. Several types of visuals such as pictures, charts, diagrams, and maps facilitate learning for these people. They don’t always remember names, but they are good at remembering faces and they maintain eye contact during a conversation to not lose focus. Auditory People with an auditory learning style learn best by hearing and speaking. They are very social and talking about concepts helps them understand the material better. Listening to music may help auditory learners to concentrate better. Auditory learners excel in oral exams, working in groups, reading out loud, and story-telling. Kinesthetic People with a kinesthetic learning style absorb information easier by using a hands-on approach and doing physical activities such as role playing, drawing, writing, and performing experiments. Kinesthetic learners would rather demonstrate how to do things instead of verbally explaining. Solitary Solitary learners prefer to learn alone in a quiet environment. People with this type of learning style are more introspective and independent learners. They spend time on self- analysis and self-reflection and problem solving on their own. They may dislike working in groups. Social Social learners prefer learning in groups, classes, or one-on-one with a teacher. They love participating in social activities and like solving problems with a group. They dislike studying on their own and get bored easily with assignments they have to complete alone. Social learners always look for opportunities to work with others and are most likely to participate in study groups, school cubs, and sports.
Connectivism - My EM203 Learning Style

03:33
Which theory most supports your own approach to learning in this online course and how? As discussed in the video I created, connectivism is the learning theory that considers an individualistic based learning approach. Connectivism promotes self-directed learning, in the sense that the individual acquires knowledge from existing resources, without any instruction to do so. The success of an individual under connectivist learning theory is dependent on self-driven exploration. The theory focuses largely in the use of internet technologies such as blogs, websites, applications, and forums, which offer very unique opportunities for individual learning. Ultimately, connectivism suggests that the more connections one makes with others, the more they will learn. Learners in the 21st century have very different and unique learning styles, and connectivism acknowledges the need for a dynamic learning concept. Connectivism is the learning theory that most supports my learning in this online course – Learning in 140 Characters or Less. As discussed in the video I created to supplement this write up, I find learning in the classroom quite difficult at times, especially in my economics courses. In most classrooms, you are expected to learn a certain way, and typically the way you learn is determined by the professor. Learning in 140 Characters or Less, however, is a course that allows the student to embrace their own learning theory, and for me, that learning theory happens to be connectivism. This online course is focused around the student completing tasks and homework on their own time, in a very collaborative, constructive, and openly communicative way. In this course, we are not expected to read a textbook and regurgitate information within it. Rather, we are expected to utilize all different kinds of learning mediums to understand core concepts of the course. This course utilizes reading materials such as articles, and opinions of our peers; it utilizes visual materials such as internet images, and videos on YouTube; and most importantly, this course revolves around the use of social media to share, view, and analyze all sorts of information. This course expects us to connect with our peers on Twitter, where we share our ideas between one another, and where we can easily access additional, related information. We utilize a collaborative discussion board on MyLearningSpace in which we, in groups, discuss course concepts on a weekly basis, on our own time frame. Also on a weekly basis, we are expected to access the current module, which delivers a new course concept, with heavy utilization of external resources such as articles, videos, surveys, forums, etc. in which we use to further our knowledge in these concepts and in the course. EM203 – Learning in 140 Characters or Less is a course that allows me to adapt within a dynamic and extensive learning environment, and that is why connectivism supports my approach to learning in this online course. **REFER TO COMMENT SECTION FOR PART 2**
