Who is a Product Manager and What do they do? [Career Insights]

07:54
The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. Bud Tribble and Steve Jobs describing a Product Manager role in 1986

01:01
In the early days on NeXT Computer, a word processor was needed for NeXT's new computer. Bud Tribble, an founding employee and lead engineer at NeXT and now VP at Apple, was tasked to build a word process but was given no specification of what features were needed. This made it impossible for Bud to give an accurate scope to meet the deadline of the NeXT computer launch. It's awesome to see Bud Tribble and Steve Jobs describe what a Product Manager would do back then.

If you’re lucky enough to land a job interview at one of the best places to work in America, Google, you’ll definitely need to bring your a-game. But to pile on the interview stress even more, Google used to ask some questions that were so hard that they were eventually banned from being asked altogether. In 2009, Lewis Lin, a job coach in Seattle, put together a list of 140 questions his clients were asked by Google. We've picked 7 of the best. These are Exploration, Analysis, Critique and Evangelism. No matter what stage in the product life cycle, simultaneously and deliberately viewing your product through these perspectives will help avoid common pitfalls and help deliver a superior solution. Ken Sandy talked about how to learn the relative advantages of each of the four mindsets: how Exploration drives innovation, Analysis drives understanding, Critique identifies risks, and Evangelism provides a path to delivery. He also discussed how to put execution in context, as your role is to build the right product, not to build the product right, and how to understand your "go-to" strengths vs. where you need to consciously practice. Ken Sandy is a 20-year veteran in the consumer internet industry. He has led Product Management teams at an executive level at both fast-growth, start-up companies looking to break into new markets, and at incumbents attempting digital transformations amidst industry disruption. Ken is currently a Product Consultant and Executive Coach. Previously, Ken was Vice President of Product at Lynda.com - an online education company acquired by LinkedIn.
