Thomas Gainsborough: A collection of 500 paintings (HD) Description: "Thomas Gainsborough was an 18th century English painter famous for his versatility. As an artist he initially gained fame for his technique of painting landscapes and became quite well-known for the manner in which he depicted light with his brushstrokes. Eventually he started painting portraits as he needed more income to provide for his family. He proved to be very talented at portraiture too and soon he began receiving commissions from the rich and the noble, including King George III himself. He completed many paintings for the king and was at one time considered to be a contender for the position of the royal painter. However, the king was obliged to select someone else to this position though Gainsborough remained the king’s favorite. Born to an artistically inclined mother who loved painting, Thomas too developed a love for the arts at a young age. His father, a weaver, supported and encouraged his son’s pursuits and sent him to study etching, painting and portraiture under the renowned William Hogarth. He soon embarked on a career as a professional artist and gained much appreciation for his landscapes. Another area of his interest was portraiture and he became a favorite of the royal family after painting the portraits of King George III and his queen. At the time of his death he was counted among the most distinguished portraitists of his era." --- SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+LearnFromMasters Contact: [email protected] --- Thanks for all support!

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) A collection of paintings 4K Ultra HD

Thomas Gainsborough FRSA (1727-1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his bitter rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British portrait artists of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes. Despite being a prolific portrait painter, Gainsborough gained greater satisfaction from his landscapes. He is credited as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy. He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, the youngest son of John Gainsborough, a weaver and maker of woollen goods, and his wife, the sister of the Reverend Humphry Burroughs. One of Gainsborough's brothers, Humphrey, had a faculty for mechanics and was said to have invented the method of condensing steam in a separate vessel, which was of great service to James Watt; another brother, John, was known as Scheming Jack because of his passion for designing curiosities. The artist spent his childhood at what is now Gainsborough House, on Gainsborough Street. He later resided there, following the death of his father in 1748 and before his move to Ipswich. The original building still survives and is now a house dedicated to his life and art. When he was still a boy he impressed his father with his drawing and painting skills, and he almost certainly had painted heads and small landscapes by the time he was ten years old, including a miniature self-portrait. Gainsborough was allowed to leave home in 1740 to study art in London, where he trained under engraver Hubert Gravelot but became associated with William Hogarth and his school. He assisted Francis Hayman in the decoration of the supper boxes at Vauxhall Gardens, and contributed to the decoration of what is now the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children. The art historian Michael Rosenthal described Gainsborough as "one of the most technically proficient and, at the same time, most experimental artists of his time". He was noted for the speed with which he applied paint, and he worked more from observations of nature than from application of formal academic rules. The poetic sensibility of his paintings caused Constable to say, "On looking at them, we find tears in our eyes and know not what brings them." Gainsborough's enthusiasm for landscapes is shown in the way he merged figures of the portraits with the scenes behind them. He said, "I'm sick of portraits, and wish very much to take my viol-da-gam and walk off to some sweet village, where I can paint landscapes and enjoy the fag end of life in quietness and ease." His landscapes were often painted at night by candlelight, using a tabletop arrangement of stones, pieces of mirrors, broccoli, and the like as a model. His later work was characterised by a light palette and easy, economical strokes. Gainsborough's only known assistant was his nephew, Gainsborough Dupont. In the last year of his life he collaborated with John Hoppner in painting a full-length portrait of Lady Charlotte Talbot. Reputation His most famous works, Portrait of Mrs. Graham; Mary and Margaret: The Painter's Daughters; William Hallett and His Wife Elizabeth, nee Stephen, known as The Morning Walk; and Cottage Girl with Dog and Pitcher, display the unique individuality of his subjects. Joshua Reynolds considered Girl with Pigs "the best picture he (Gainsborough) ever painted or perhaps ever will". Gainsborough's works became popular with collectors from the 1850s on, after Lionel de Rothschild began buying his portraits. The rapid rise in the value of pictures by Gainsborough and also by Reynolds in the mid 19th century was partly because the Rothschild family, including Ferdinand de Rothschild began collecting them. In 2011, Gainsborough's portrait of Miss Read was sold by Michael Pearson, 4th Viscount Cowdray, for a record price of £6.5M. She was a matrilineal descendant of Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, and the mitochondrial DNA descent through which the remains of Richard III of England were identified in 2013, passes through her and her daughter Harriet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Gainsborough Thank you, please subscribe for future videos https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0gMk3w9hw8BbtqoUpEMKeg?sub_confirmation=1

Thomas Gainsborough bio - from Sudbury, Suffolk - English 18th Century artist HD

04:35
This is a bit off the beaten track for me, but as Thomas Gainsborough was a local lad and his childhood home is only a few miles from me, which I visited recently, I thought I would put this video together which very briefly outlines this great English artists story. Born in the market town of Sudbury in Suffolk and sent to London at the age of 13 to learn his craft. Married and moved to Bath which was a wealthier part of the country where there was more portrait work around from the great and titled English aristocrats - they didn't want to buy Gainsboroughs landscapes which he enjoyed painting more. I suppose when you have the patronage of the King and Queen - you really have made it as an artist - that leaves me with a very long journey ahead! Hope you enjoy the video and if you get a chance go to Thomas Gainsborough's house in Sudbury - well worth a visit and it has a beautiful garden. http://www.gainsborough.org My website:- http://www.stevebuchananart.co.uk

藝苑掇英 Thomas Gainsborough English painter (1727–1788)托馬斯·庚斯博羅

Thomas Gainsborough English painter (1727–1788)托馬斯·庚斯博羅 Thomas Gainsborough, an 18th century English painter known for his evocative portraiture and landscapes, is most famous for the portrait known as The Blue Boy. Painter Thomas Gainsborough, baptized in Sudbury, England, on May 14, 1727, showed an early talent for drawing, which his weaver father encouraged him to pursue. Though famous painters like Hogarth and van Dyck were influences, he favored landscapes, becoming a master of light and brushwork, but when Gainsborough shifted to portraiture for income, his talent attracted the likes of King George III and other nobles, and made him a contender for the position of royal painter. When elected a founding member of the Royal Academy, he moved his studio to London. Perhaps his most famous work is a portrait known as The Blue Boy. Gainsborough died on August 2, 1788, in London. Thomas Gainsborough was one of nine children born to John Gainsborough, a weaver and woolen merchant, in Sudbury, in Suffolk, England. He was born in the spring of 1727 and christened on May 14. Perhaps due to his mother's penchant for painting flowers and encouraging her son's talent with a pencil, Gainsborough assembled a rather impressive portfolio at a young age. By 10, he had drawn some local village landscapes, and added caricatures and other facial studies. His father was sufficiently impressed with his work to allow him to go to London, England, where he studied at an academy in St. Martin's Lane under the renowned William Hogarth and other masters known for etching, historical painting and portraiture. During this time he fell in love with Margaret Burr, the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman, and her dowry allowed him to set up a studio in Ipswich by the time he was 20. When his landscapes were not selling, Gainsborough turned to portraiture for money. He moved his wife and two daughters to Bath, where there was a more bustling influx of upscale clientele, and set to studying the painter Sir Anthony van Dyck for insight into technique. His reputation began to grow. Sending his portraits to the Society of Arts exhibitions in London (his Ipswich friend Joshua Kirby was president), especially those of his more prominent sitters, helped attract attention to his work. Gainsborough's increasing prosperity allowed him to indulge his passion for music. He learned to play the viol di gamba (a fretted string instrument), the harp and the hautboy (oboe), among other instruments, and employed a houseful of international musicians. Perhaps because of his lively nature, the tall, handsome and garrulous Gainsborough enjoyed spending time with theater folk. He painted celebrated actors such as David Garrick and Sarah Siddons, and also lesser known players, gifting his portraits to them, as well as sketches and landscapes. By 1774, he had become so successful, it was silly not to be in London. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy, and not long after moving his family to the capital, he was summoned to the palace and began portraits of King George III and other nobles. Although the king was obliged to name his rival, Joshua Reynolds, as the official court painter, Gainsborough remained the favorite of the royal family. Thomas Gainsborough died of cancer on August 2, 1788, at the age of 61. He requested to be buried at St. Anne's Church at Kew, which was the royal family's primary residence and known for its lush and varied landscape. It was a fitting locale, since Gainsborough had returned to his love of landscape painting in his waning years and become known for his simple settings, elegant brushwork and extraordinary use of light. And yet, Gainsborough's most recognizable painting today is probably a portrait of the son of a wealthy merchant, known simply as The Blue Boy. Legend has it that Gainsborough tried to reconcile with Reynolds, his rival, at his deathbed. The two share a reputation as the most famous portraitists of the latter 18th century. Gainsborough is also known one of the originators of the 18th century British landscape school. A later painter with a similar reputation, John Constable, was a huge fan, saying of Gainsborough's landscapes, "On looking at them, we find tears in our eyes and know not what brings them."

Thomas Cole: A collection of 134 paintings (HD) Description: "Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was primarily a landscape artist, who developed his style of painting from European art masters and by studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His sketches and paintings were of the Catskills, White Mountains, Adirondacks, and the coast of Maine, yet he also produced many allegorical works, painted in a series. Cole was the founder of the Hudson River School, an American art movement, which promoted realistic and detailed portrayals of American landscapes and its wilderness. Painting with a romantic and naturalistic style, Cole became a famous painter of landscapes and an important study of painting style to other artists. Gainsborough Connections: Prof. Abel and Bach

02:15
"Professor Abel", painted ca. 1777 by Thomas Gainsborough (oil on canvas), is an homage to his friend. Shown are some of the elements that first got my attention. The painting is in The Huntington Art Gallery collection. Karl Friedrich Abel (December 22, 1723 -- June 20, 1787) was a German composer of the Classical era, spanning the life-time of Jean B, Russeau. He was a fine player on the viola da gamba, and composed important music for that instrument. Abel was born in Cöthen, the son of Christian Ferdinand Abel, the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra of Johann Sebastian Bach. It was on Bach's recommendation that in 1748 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse's court orchestra at Dresden where remained for 10 years. In 1759 he went to England, and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte. He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which, the pentachord, was newly invented. He was a boy pupil of J.S. Bach, who in turn was a god-father to one of Abel's children. Professor Abel occupied a unique position in the history of music. With Johann Christian Bach, he co-managed, performed and composed for one of the most successful concert organizations in London during the late 18th century. From 1765 to 1782, the popular Bach-Abel series was his principal venue, yet the instrument on which his fame rested as a performer was by then universally considered to be old-fashioned and out-of-date. Few amateurs and even fewer professionals were attracted to the viola da gamba after the close of the Baroque period. However, the music which Abel played on these concerts was anything but out-of-date. The 'Prelude' on this recording, played on a viola da gamba by John Dornenburg, is an example; it was taken from a manuscript (New York Public Library, Drexel 5871) containing thirty pieces thought to represent the style of Abel's solo improvisations. The main reason why the instrument fell into oblivion was becauase it's sound was not loud enough for concert halls. In the baroque and renaissance, most musical performances occurred in the home, small theaters, churches, or the palaces of the nobility. Towards the end of the 18th century and into the 19th century, performances moved from the chambers of the rich to the concert halls. The viola da gamba was not loud enough to be heard effectively and didn't fit well into an orchestra. Thank you Martins de Sa for the "palhinha" and Harmonico, for the clarification.

The Nomadic Eye: Traveling through Thomas Gainsborough's Landscapes

57:49
Thomas Gainsborough’s paintings and drawings grant the viewer the perspective of a traveler wandering along a winding path encountering both the familiar and the enigmatic. In this illustrated lecture (held on December 9, 2015) Professor Mark Hallett, Director of Studies at The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, takes us on a tour of Gainsborough’s pastoral views and suggests how we might best understand and appreciate the pictorial world that the artist created in and through his landscapes. This program is organized by the Morgan Drawing Institute.

Thomas Gainsborough Oil Painting

02:17
Gainsborough exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1761 to 1769, and became a foundation member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He first exhibited there the following year, but in 1773 quarrelled with the Academy over the hanging of his pictures, and did not exhibit there again until 1777. In 1784 he again quarrelled with them over the same subject, and never again exhibited at the Academy, instead organising a series of annual exhibitions in his studio at Schomberg House. He received commissions from the Duke and Duchess of Cumberland in 1777, and from the King and Queen in 1781. He toured the West Country with Gainsborough Dupont in about 1782, and visited the Lake District with Samuel Kilderbee in 1783. Gainsborough died in London after a reconciliation with his great rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, who eulogised him at the Royal Academy, commenting that 'whatever he attempted he carried to a high degree of excellence' (R. Thomas Gainsborough - Le portrait anglais préromantique

04:41

Paintings

J. Paul Getty devoted most of his energies to the decorative arts; he collected paintings only fitfully. He began collecting art in the 1930s, and by World War II owned two major pictures: a portrait by Thomas Gainsborough of James Christie and a Rembrandt portrait that he later gave to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. During his lifetime, he concentrated on Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings. Since Getty's death in 1976, the collection has broadened with paintings from the Dutch and French schools such as Théodore Géricault's Portrait Study, and pictures by the French Impressionists and their successors, such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir's La Promenade. A Gainsborough at White Oaks? Furman's Art Mystery

58:18
In 1975, Charles and Homozel Daniel purchased "Portrait of Lady Impey" from an auction house in New York City. They were told it was painted by the renowned 18th-century English portraitist Thomas Gainsborough. The Daniels bequeathed the painting to Furman and it was appraised, along with the rest of the White Oaks Collection, by Sotheby's in 1993. Without sending it to an expert in London, Sotheby's could not determine whether the portrait was painted by Thomas Gainsborough or by the artist's less revered nephew Gainsborough Dupont.

Original Painted Portrait of Rita de Acosta Lydig by Giovanni Boldini from M.S. Rau Antiques

02:39
Among the most sought after portraitists of his day with a distinctive, instantly recognizable style, Giovanni Boldini captures here the likeness of the socialite popularly regarded as "the most picturesque woman in America," Rita de Acosta Lydig. Boldini, the artist of choice among American high society, perfectly expresses the energy and high fashion of his sitter through his flamboyant style. One of the few finished, full-length portraits from this extraordinary artist’s oeuvre, this portrait, known as the Rothschild Boldini, is counted among his greatest masterpieces. A woman renowned for her fiery personality, sensational style and unmatched beauty, Lydig served as muse for some of the most celebrated artists of her era. Having been captured in alabaster by sculptor Malvina Hoffmann, on film by the photographers Adolf de Meyer, Edward Steichen, and Gertrude Käsebier, and on canvas by John Singer Sargent and Boldini, Lydig’s vivacious visage permeates throughout art history. The present work is unarguably the best among these portraits. In 1910 Lydig, along with her husband Captain Philips, commissioned two portraits from Boldini, one of the couple and one of Lydig herself. The first is currently in the collection of the Museo Boldini in Ferrara, and is executed in the more formal style of Sir Thomas Gainsborough. The second, which is the present work, offers a far more modern treatment of the sitter – one which perfectly reflects her own voguish character. Born in 1880 the eldest of eight children, Lydig’s father was a Spanish exile, and her mother a member of the Ducal family in Alba. At the age of eighteen, the young beauty married the reclusive multi-millionaire, William Earl Dodge Stokes, divorcing him just four years later and earning the largest divorce settlement to date. Soon after, she married for the second time, becoming Mrs. Lydig and truly cementing her place as a leader of high society. A passionate collector, her enthusiasms ranged from rare lace to furniture of the 15th and 16th centuries, along with bibelots, jewelry, and the fashionable fine arts of the period. Performers such as Sarah Bernhardt, Enrico Caruso, and Arturo Toscanini would often base themselves in her house when visiting the United States. Along with John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler, Boldini was counted among the most highly sought after modern portraitists in Europe and America. His exuberant, bold style was particularly desirable among his increasingly fashion-conscious clientele, who admired Boldini’s simultaneously traditional and modern compositions. Indeed, Boldini’s oeuvre displays both his knowledge the more traditional British portrait genre painters such as Sir Anthony van Dyck and Sir Thomas Gainsborough, along with the more modern Impressionists and Italian painters known as the Macchiaioli. Once dubbed the "Master of Swish" by Time magazine for his flowing style, Boldini is regarded among the best of his genre, and today his works can be seen in important museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Musée D’Orsay, Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome and Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Thomas Moran: A collection of 342 paintings (HD)

Thomas Moran: A collection of 342 paintings (HD) Description: "Thomas Moran was born in 1837 in Bolton, Lancashire to two handloom weavers. The rapid industrialization of nineteenth century England soon mechanized the weaving process and forced Thomas Moran's parents out of their jobs, at which point the whole family was moved to Kensington, Philadelphia, just outside of Philadelphia. At the age of sixteen, Thomas Moran became an apprentice to a Philadelphia wood engraving firm, Scattergood & Telfer. It was in this position that he began to paint and draw seriously, working diligently on his skills as both a watercolorist and an illustrator. In this he had help and support from his brother Edward, who was an associate of the marine painter James Hamilton. In the early 1860, Thomas Moran traveled to Lake Superior, where he painted and sketched the landscape of the Great Lakes. Back in Philadelphia he sold lithographs of the Great Lakes before setting off on another trip, this time to London, to see the works of the famed British landscape and marine painter JMW Turner. Thomas Moran replications of Thomas Moran's work so impressed the director of the National Gallery that he was given a private room to work in. Upon returning to the U.S., Moran wanted to go west again and paint but had to wait for the right opportunity. That opportunity came in the form of Ferdinand V. Hayden's 1871 Geological Survey Expedition to what is now Yellowstone National Park. Thomas Moran was hired, along with photographer William Henry Jackson, to document the landscape of the region. He could not have chosen a better trip or companion, as the combined talents of Moran and Jackson in documenting the geysers, hot springs, canyons and cliffs of the "Yellow Stone Territory" would be instrumental in persuading Congress to set the land aside as a National Park. It was also the beginning of a fruitful partnership, as Thomas Moran would accompany Jackson again on Major John Wesley Powell's expedition to the west in 1873. It was on this trip that Thomas Moran painted his two most famous works, "The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone" and "The Chasm of the Colorado," both of which were purchased (for a previously unheard-of sum of $10,000 each) by Congress to be displayed in the Capitol in Washington. With the money he was earning from his newfound fame, Thomas Moran again traveled to Europe, this time to Venice, where he purchased a gondola and shipped it back to the United States in order to use it as a model for a variety of Venice scenes he produced after 1890. Thomas Moran moved west permanently in his old age, settling in Santa Barbara, CA and traveling to Acoma and Laguna pueblos to paint the scenery and lifestyle of the native peoples. He died in 1926 of natural causes." --- SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learnfrommasters/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+LearnFromMasters Contact: [email protected] SUPPORT MY WORK AT: https://www.patreon.com/LearnFromMasters --- Thank you so much for your support!

Sir Joshua Reynolds: A collection of 434 paintings (HD) Description: "As one of the most renowned portraitists of the 18th century, Sir Joshua Reynolds contributed to the founding of the Royal Academy and eventually became its president. At the height of his career, Reynolds was sworn in as court painter to the King, the most prestigious honor that could be bestowed on an artist at the time. Reynolds was born in Devon, England in 1723 as the son of a schoolmaster. He was apprenticed to portraitist Thomas Hudson from 1740 to 1743, then stayed in Italy for several years studying antique sculptures and old master pictures. Upon his return to London in 1753 he pursued his career with an unrivaled dedication, rarely taking holiday and surrounding himself with the London intelligentsia. Reynolds was a modern day polymath, a lecturer and artist simultaneously. Along with Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, and David Wilkie, Reynolds remains one of the most accomplished British artists of the time." Feel free to subscribe!

John Crome: A collection of 110 paintings (HD)

John Crome: A collection of 110 paintings (HD) Description: "English landscape painter John Crome was founder of the Norwich School. He trained as a coach painter until 1790. His ambition was to become a landscape painter and he was encouraged by a local collector, Thomas Harvey, who allowed him access to his large collection of British and Dutch paintings. In this way, Crome assimilated the naturalism of artists Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709), Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-82), Jan Wynants (c.1625-84), as well as Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88). By the 1800s he had developed his own style of landscape painting, always based on the rustic East Anglian scenery. In 1803, Crome helped found the Norwich School of Artists, a group of painters which included the watercolourist John Sell Cotman (1782-1842). Crome painted in oils and watercolour and many of his works can be found at the Tate Gallery and the Royal Academy. He is often called 'Old Crome' to distinguish him from his artist son John Bernay Crome (1794-1842). His paintings include View of Mousehold Heath near Norwich (1812, Victoria & Albert Museum, London) and The Poringland Oak (Tate Collection, London)." --- MUSIC: Chris Zabriskie - There's Probably No Time There's Probably No Time by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/uvp/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+LearnFromMasters Contact: [email protected] SUPPORT MY WORK AT: https://www.patreon.com/LearnFromMasters LIST OF ARTISTS already posted on LearnFromMasters: https://goo.gl/hri4HE --- Thank you so much for your support!

THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH - MR AND MRS ANDREWS

01:07
Mr and Mrs Andrews is an oil on canvas portrait of about 1750 by Thomas Gainsborough, now in the National Gallery, London. The work is an unusual combination of two common types of painting of the period: a double portrait, here of a recently married couple, and a landscape view of the English countryside. Gainsborough's work mainly consisted of these two different genres, but their striking combination side-by-side in this extended horizontal format is unique in Gainsborough's oeuvre, and extremely rare in other painters. Restore To Life The Tomb of Thomas Gainsborough

08:38
Ruth Gledhill of The Times reports from St Anne's Church, Kew on plans to restore the cracked and crumbling tomb of Thomas Gainsborough, who painted many portraits of King George III and is buried in the churchyard. This comes on the day that the Church of England announces the fund manager Jonathan Ruffer has donated £15 million to save the Zurbarán paintings, threatened with sale by the Church Commissioners, at Auckland Castle for the nation. Four years ago, Ruffer tells The Spectator, the millionaire conservativen evangelical Christian bought a copy of one of Zurbarán's cowled saints, painted by Gainsborough. Thomas Gainsborough - The Blue Boy *

00:52
The Blue Boy (1770). The Huntington, California. Thomas Gainsborough FRSA (14 May 1727 (baptised) – 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes. He preferred landscapes to portraits, and is credited (with Richard Wilson) as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
