All Alone in the Night - Time-lapse footage of the Earth as seen from the ISS

02:30
FAQ: https://randomphotons.com/alone Images: http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/ Music: 'Freedom Fighters' by Two Steps from Hell Editor: David Peterson Serving Suggestion: 1080p, lights off, volume up :) Inspired by a version of the opening sequence of this clip called 'What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth?' (Inspiration: http://youtu.be/74mhQyuyELQ), I tracked down the original time-lapse sequence taken on the International Space Station (ISS) via NASA, found some additional ones there, including the spectacular Aurora Australis sequences, and set it to a soundtrack that almost matches the awe and wonder I feel when I see our home from above. To those brave men and women who fly alone in the night to take us to the stars, we salute you. ----------------------- Sequences: 1. (0:00) North-to-south down the western coast of North and South America. 2. (0:48) North-to-south over Florida, the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands. 3. (0:56) South-East Asia, approaching the Philippine Sea 4. (1:04) Western Europe, from France through Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. 5. (1:20) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean, approaching Australia 6. (1:36) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean. 7. (1:52) Aurora Australis, unknown location in the Southern Hemisphere. ----------------------- Featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day! http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120305.html Explanation from NASA: Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.

10 Roads You Would Never Want to Drive On

Top 10 Most Dangerous Roads and Highways from around the world you should never take your car on. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Other Videos You Might Like Strange Things That Only Happen In America 10 Largest Holes Swallowing Earth Description: Since the invention of the modern automobile, we have been in love with our cars, trucks and motorcycles. It’s hard to think how we could function on a daily basis without a personal car around to take us to the grocery store, movie theatre or over to a friend’s house. This mode of transportation is such an important part of most peoples’ lives that we have no idea how we’d cope if cars suddenly disappeared tomorrow. Sure, most cars pollute and after a decade or so we get rid of the old and bring in a new car – filling up wrecking yards and burnings tons of gasoline in the process. The automobile is so important that rather than develop a whole new mode of transportation we instead focus our energy on creating more efficient gasoline burning engines and new models of electric cars. Nonetheless, the car is an integral part of our lives and our culture. Of course, many people have often heard the saying (but never really payed any attention to it) that driving is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives. Indeed, getting behind the wheel of your ride and heading off to work or some other destination can be very dangerous. Statistically, the number crunchers say that you are far more likely to die driving your car than flying in a plane. The numbers seem to back this up by showing that over 90 people are killed every day in motor vehicle accidents in the US alone. It all makes sense once you think about it. If you think about all the people out on the road and add in distracted and drunk drivers, mechanical failures and bad weather then it’s easy to see why driving can be so dangerous. But what about the actual sections of roads and highways that seemingly have a high number of accidents and fatalities all year round. That is, it can be bad enough driving on ‘regular’ roads and highways around the world but there are roads which, for whatever reason, just seem more dangerous than the rest. You are probably picturing the classic mountain side road, carved into the rock with minimal safety barriers and exposed to landslides and all the inclement weather you can think of. Yes, those roads are very dangerous, but they aren’t the only ones to avoid driving on. As part two of our ‘dangerous roads’ series, we look at 10 roads you probably wouldn’t want to drive on. These motorways are found all across the world, in all sorts of environments and at all sorts of altitudes. There are the expected mountain roads – narrow and crumbling where one small mistake means you are going for a very long fall. There are also the remote and isolated highways running through deserts and the vastness of Siberia. There are even the sea level roads which provide their own nasty little surprise that can ruin your day (or life). We guarantee that after seeing this your daily commute will appear to be a walk in the park. Chris Hadfield Returns to Earth

07:04
2013-05-14 - After five months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), CSA Astronaut Chris Hadfield and his Expedition 34/35 crewmates Tom Marshburn and Roman Romanenko made a successful undocking from the ISS and a triumphant return to Earth in their Soyuz TMA-07M spacecraft. Landing in Kazakhstan at 10:31 pm EDT, Hadfield would emerge from the Soyuz in good health, helped by the local ground crew. Hadfield became the first Canadian Commander of the ISS during Expedition 35, performed over 130 science experiments, and was at the center of an impressive social media campaign that captured the attention and support of people from around the world. MIG-29: To The Edge Of Space And Gravitational Stress

08:24
More information: http://www.space-affairs.com Unfortunately the flights with the world legendary MIG-29 stopped in October 2017 after 11 years of flying our clients. Do you want to have more MIG-29 videos? Visit the playlist "6-cam view" of an MIG-29 flight here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG7iHeDUtdbMBAvhf2YaXI5p8Yh8OjLRZ A flight with the MIG-29 "Fulcrum" to the edge of space is a spectacular and very emotional experience. Depending on weather conditions and a total weight of the plane the flight will take you to altitudes between 56,000 and 72,000 feet. These are the capabilities. The height what you can reach on your flight day depends on weather conditions of the flight day. (Temperature levels below the stratosphere). If you want to see the flight in total out of the view of the backseater and will listen to the communication, have a look here: http://youtu.be/AQ1DCN74A6o And by the way: the formula what you see on Michael's visor is the Newton's law of universal gravity. :) German artist Michael Najjar performed a high altitude MIG-29 flight. Michael Najjar is a German artist, adventurer and - future astronaut. Born in 1966, he has lived and worked in Berlin since 1988. His work is shown in museums, galleries and biennials around the world. He works with photography and video. The focus of his work is on key elements of our modern society driven and controlled by computer and information technologies. Najjar, widely seen as a visual futurist, transmutes science, history and philosophy into visions and utopias of future social structures emerging under the impact of cutting-edge technologies. His current work series "outer space" deals with the latest developments in space flight and the way they will shape our future life on earth and in earth's near orbit. He used the footage and the pictures of his art line "Outer Space". His interest was to go high as possible and to do a lot or rolls. Both you can see in this video. Test pilot Yuri Polyakov flown him through the sound barrier, to the edge of space and did a lot of rolls during the descent from high above. The stunning pictures of Earth's atmosphere are a result of this flight. More information about Michael Najjar and his arts: http://www.michaelnajjar.com Attention: all people who think that Earth is flat should think about to increase knowledge. Humans experience is available nowadays 365/7/24. 500 years ago people were set on fire because they told that Earth is a sphere and that the sun is the centre and not the sphere called Earth. The video (and others we make) was made with GoPro Cameras, what are the state of the art action cams nowadays. These cameras using ultra wide lenses with 170 degrees, precisely those cameras are known for. It's called a barrel distortion, what gives a more sized imagery. We do not have to talk about more physics, laws and knowledge, what is known since hundred of years. And a final note to "The Edge of Space": The border at the edge of space is defined by the Karman Line at 360,000 feet altitude. This is certainly a physical boundary, where aerodynamics stops, and astronautics begins. The using of the expression "edge of space" is also referring to a region below the conventional 100 km boundary to space, which is often meant to include substantially lower regions as well, for flights with high atmospheric balloons or aircraft what are flying mostly higher than normal aircraft. Balloon with GoPro to Near Space

08:28
MAKE SURE TO WATCH IN HD! High altitude unmanned balloon launch that goes up to near space and back. HOW I GOT THE FOOTAGE BACK: I used a SPOT GPS tracker in the payload to track where the payload fell after the balloon burst. Then I retrieved it with the GoPro and its recorded footage inside. See links below for much more details. Yes, it’s a GoPro, yes they have a built in semi fish eye lens. Think what you want, I did this for my own enjoyment, not to prove any point. Two posts I've made that can answer many of the questions in the comments: Post on the launch: https://imgur.com/gallery/UXezC Post of How to do your own Balloon Launch: https://imgur.com/gallery/8a40L All designed and launched by myself. All FAA regulations were followed, the FSDO was notified and given all the details, and a NOTAM was even filed with Ft Worth center for balloon activity. A lot of people asked me why I was doing this. Mostly, I had free time and needed a project/hobby to keep me engaged and secondly, space is neat. Check out the video and see for yourself. The Coin in the video is from my AFROTC detachment at Purdue University. Go Boilers! Shout out to Purdue Engineering for teaching me how to tackle a project like this. If you are interested in doing your own balloon project check out this website. It is a great place to start. https://www.balloonchallenge.org Thanks for watching!

3 proofs that debunk flat-Earth theory | NASA's Michelle Thaller

07:05
Hey flat Earthers, it's time to put your theory to bed once and for all! A curious stargazer by the name of Oscar has submitted a question to Big Think's 'Ask an astronomer' series with NASA's Michelle Thaller. Oscar wants to know: "What would be the easiest proof that the Earth isn’t flat, that I could come back with whenever I get challenged on this issue?" Thaller sets the record straight. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/michelle-thaller-how-to-disprove-flat-earth-theory Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink So, Oscar, you asked the question, “What are some of the easiest ways that you can prove that the Earth is round?” Because apparently, this is something that we’re debating—I have no idea why. That’s a hard thing for me to even start talking about because there are so many proofs that the Earth is round, it’s difficult to know where to start. And it’s not okay to think that the Earth is flat. This is not a viable argument. I have friends who have been on the International Space Station, they have orbited the Earth once every 90 minutes; I've had personal experience with people who have been up in space and can see with their own eyes that the Earth is round. And of course, we‘ve taken all of these amazing pictures from space; they’re so beautiful, all those pictures of the Earth. So I don’t really know what’s going on right now with this 'Earth is flat' thing, but I will tell you that this is one of the things I really enjoyed teaching my own astronomy class about because there are proofs all around you. It is not difficult to know that the Earth is round. In fact, people have known of this for way more than 2,000 years. The ancient Greeks actually had a number of really elegant, wonderful proofs that the earth was a sphere. So let’s start from the simple to the slightly more complicated. One of the things you can see yourself, with a pair of binoculars, is if you actually go out to a lake and there are boats on that lake, the farther away a boat is the more the bottom of the boat will disappear, and you’ll basically just see the mast of the boat. And as a boat goes farther and farther away the last thing you will see is the very top of the mast of that boat, and that’s because the boat is actually going over the horizon that’s curved—and that means that as it goes farther and farther away you see less and less of the bottom of it, and more of the top of that. You can see that with binoculars by an ocean, by a lake, it’s really easy. That wouldn’t happen if the Earth were flat—you would simply see the boat getting smaller and smaller and smaller as it went farther away, but you’d be able to see the whole thing with the same proportions. Now, another way that you can tell that we’re on a sphere is to think about how there’s something called the tropics on the Earth, and the tropics are places near the equator of the earth were sometimes the sun is overhead in the sky. This was actually something that the Greeks used, not only to prove that the Earth was round about 2000 years ago, but they actually measured the circumference of the Earth, accurate to within just a couple percent. 2,000 years ago we’ve known that the Earth was round. There was a really brilliant Greek scientist called Eratosthenes, and Eratosthenes noticed that there was a town called Syene, and on a certain date the sun would actually shine straight down to the bottom of a well. That meant the sun was directly overhead; you could look down a well and see the sun shining back at you. And on the very same date, farther away in the city of Alexandria, that didn’t happen. The sun was not directly overhead, it was a slight angle, and all that Eratosthenes did was he measured the difference in the angle of the sun. It was straight overhead in Syene; in Alexandria it was a little bit less than overhead, and he rationed that that change in angle from one city to another was probably indicative of us being on a curved surface, and you could make all kinds of measurements even between those two cities and see that the angles were different—the sun was at a different place in the sky. Using this, he actually measured the circumference of the Earth, and he got it right 2,000 years ago. So another really simple proof is that on any given date, at different cities and different places around the world, the sun is at different angles in the sky. That wouldn’t happen if the Earth wasn’t round.

World's Roundest Object!

11:44
The world's roundest object helps solve the longest running problem in measurement -- how to define the kilogram. Support Veritasium on Patreon: http://bit.ly/VePatreon A kilogram isn't what it used to be. Literally. The original name for it was the 'grave', proposed in 1793 but it fell victim to the French Revolution like its creator, Lavoisier. So begins the tale of the most unusual SI unit. The kilogram is the only base unit with a prefix in its name, and the only one still defined by a physical artifact, the international prototype kilogram or IPK. But the problem with this definition has long been apparent. The IPK doesn't seem to maintain its mass compared to 40 similar cylinders minted at the same time. The goal is therefore to eliminate the kilogram's dependence on a physical object. Two main approaches are being considered to achieve this end: the Avogadro Project and the Watt Balance. The Avogadro project aims to redefine Avogadro's constant (currently defined by the kilogram -- the number of atoms in 12 g of carbon-12) and reverse the relationship so that the kilogram is precisely specified by Avogadro's constant. This method required creating the most perfect sphere on Earth. It is made out of a single crystal of silicon 28 atoms. By carefully measuring the diameter, the volume can be precisely specified. Since the atom spacing of silicon is well known, the number of atoms in a sphere can be accurately calculated. This allows for a very precise determination of Avogadro's constant. Special thanks to Katie Green, Dr. David Farrant, the CSIRO, and the National Measurment Institute for their help. Thanks also to Nessy Hill for filming and reviewing earlier drafts of this video. There is debate as to whether this is truly the roundest object ever created. The Gravity Probe-B rotors are also spherical with very low tolerances such that they may in fact be rounder. ZERO-G Challenges of a Trip to Mars!

07:35
A trip to #Mars involves radiation, muscle and bone loss, intermediate axis theorem and liquids. Check out Mars on National Geographic, Monday Nov 12 at 9/8c #sponsored When I got offered the chance to fly in another #zeroG plane, I jumped at the chance. Do you know how hard it is when you are thrust into low-gravity, like the 37% of Earth's gravity of Mars, and you have to remember what you were going to say in a 30 second window as blood floods your head? It's pretty hard. It would be even harder to actually travel to Mars. It would take about 8 months in microgravity during which time your muscles and bones would weaken substantially, even if you exercise for hours a day like the astronauts on the space station. And your heart is a muscle too so it weakens as well. Before I contemplated these rates of muscle and bone loss, I thought the major challenge with a round trip journey to Mars would be the logistics of spacecraft and having enough fuel to get back. But with the weakening of the human body, it's an open question whether anyone would really want to come back. Filmed by Steve Boxall Music from Epidemic Sound: http://epidemicsound.com

The Most Radioactive Places on Earth

11:18
Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation? Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts. Notes about measuring radiation: Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation. Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video. https://xkcd.com/radiation/ DOSES MAY VARY The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents). Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only. The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. 50 years ago, three NASA astronauts embarked on a journey that would take them “Round the moon and back”. The Apollo 8 mission proved the performance of the command and service module. This historic mission launched on December 21, 1968 to demonstrate a lunar trajectory and was the first crewed launch of the Saturn V rocket. On Christmas Eve, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders were the first humans to orbit the Moon and the first to see an Earthrise above its surface. How a Rocket Works/Earth to Space Eg SpaceX Falcon 9 and Dragon

05:10
How a rocket or rocket engine works to go from the surface of the Earth to Space. The example used is SpaceX's Falcon 9 both with their Dragon capsule to go to the International Space Station (ISS) and with Astrobotic Technology's Griffin lander and Red Rover rover to the moon. As well, a simple single stage rocket is used to explain some simple concepts. Newton's 1st and 3rd laws, just two of Newton's three laws of motion, are explained along with how they work with gravity to allow rockets to fly and to orbit. What orbiting is is also explained. Solid fuel rockets, liquid fuel rockets and hybrid fuel rockets are also covered. And lastly, how multiple stages are used to get to space, SpaceX's 2 stage rocket with the Falcon 9 as the first stage being used as the example. For info about current events and the near future of human space travel, visit: http://rimstar.org/space NOTE: Any comments saying that rockets don't work in space or a vacuum will be deleted and possibly the commenter will be banned with the assumption that the commenter is trolling. 3D computer generated animation done using Blender 2.59. The Earth is Not Alone - Space Documentary HD

01:55:45
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLlYCwYnM3k U.S. space agency NASA announced the discovery of more than 200 new planets on Monday, 10 of which are believed to be about the right size and temperature to support life. Of the 219 new suspected planets to have been discovered by NASA's Kepler telescope, 10 were found to exist in the so-called 'Goldilocks zone' of their solar system. This refers to the distance between the planet and their star, which is neither too hot nor too cold to support complex life. The presence of liquid water on these "rocky" Earth-like planets is seen as a key ingredient required for the existence of life. "Are we alone? Maybe Kepler today has told us indirectly, although we need confirmation, that we are probably not alone," Mario Perez, Kepler program scientist, said at a news conference. NASA launched the Kepler telescope in 2009 in a bid to discover whether other Earth-like planets are common or rare. The latest identification of suspected exoplanets – planets outside our own solar system – brings the tally discovered by the Kepler telescope to 4,034. The number of worlds thought to be approximately the same size and temperature as Earth is around 50.
