EWQLSO Tutorial Part 2 - Expression & Realistic MIDI programming

302 ratings | 39131 views
My second EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra tutorial takes a look at the different ways of adding expression and realism to your MIDI programming using the PLAY keyswitch options, Cubase Expression Maps, and some midi programming tricks. Download all of the EWQLSO expression maps from Riveted Studios: http://www.rivetedstudios.com/download/eastwestquantum-leap/ Part 1 of the tutorial here (setting up the Orchestra for use in Metal): http://youtu.be/A2vPX6Qa394 Part 3 here (EQ and Plugins) : http://youtu.be/lZaPgroOUXo

Is there a way to reset round robin for up-down articulations, so that it always starts with specific articulation, not the one it's "planned"?
ANNSQ (3 months ago)
you can set a keyswitch for a round robin reset, I've set mine to C0. Not sure if that's what you want to do though
The Arkham Rebellion (7 months ago)
I've not tried it myself, but apparently there is according to this forum post: http://www.soundsonline-forums.com/showthread.php?t=41473

Great series helps me out a lot! Coming from electronic music i was struggling pretty hard with orchestration. Writing and mixing is still a bitch but that's a practice thing i guess^^ Thx man!

no problem dude, thanks for the comment

I have EWQL symphonic libraryes full but I don't have that player any idea where can I downloaded?? thanks
Cantavanda (2 years ago)
Did you pirate your libraries? Or do you have really old versions? Because every new purchase ever now gets that.
Deon van Heerden (2 years ago)
If your library is very old, you may still have the Kontakt version.
The Arkham Rebellion (2 years ago)
As far as I know the Play engine is free for all owners of EWQL, check out their support pages for the download
Thiago Gabriel (2 years ago)
Really appreciate that, very good point for writing strings.
Holger Decker (2 years ago)
Thank you very much for your explanations.
The Arkham Rebellion (2 years ago)
+Holger Decker no worries, thanks for watching

Hi there Arkham Rebellion! Your're tutorials have been great and ive learned so much from them. But when it comes to the expression maps, ive stumbled across a problem. I have the EWQL symphonic orchestra Gold edition but since i dont own EWQL Play "sampleplayer?" i am curently using Kontakt 5 to load my librarys in. And it doesnt seem to have all the articulations kewswithches in 1 sample. I can load say, "18 V Keysw Sord C0-D0" which gives me 3 different key switches to choose from, on that loaded sample. Or if i choose the legato one, i get 3 different legato kewswitches and so on. Which makes the expression map quite useless for me, since i have so few keysw on every track. My question: Is there a way to load many different samples as a multi to be able to simulate the master Keysw option you have in the EWQL Player, by loading many different samples on one track? How would you tackle this problem? Do you have any ideas? Thanks /Bill

+Stygian Ascent Hi, I replied to this comment a few days ago but it seems to have disappeared here so not sure if you saw it. I believe you can upgrade to the PLAY engine for free, this EastWest support page is probably what you're looking for: http://www.soundsonline-europe.com/Support?section=updates&article=

Can't seem to find the Expression Map option in my Cubase Elements 7 version. Is there something wrong with my eyes, Cubase or both? Mayhap expression maps are not included in the Elements version of Cubase!?
Michael Keihl (2 years ago)
Ok, that's what I suspected. Thanks for the helpful videos, though. I am in the process of using CC11 and CC1 for a more realistic expression with EastWest strings. (I saw you did something like that with CC7 in the video)
The Arkham Rebellion (2 years ago)
+BusaLeLizwe1 As far as I know, Cubase Elements doesn't include many of the MIDI features in the full version unfortunately. I don't see any reason why the master keyswitch technique wouldn't work though, so you're probably stuck with that I'm afraid.
Caveman1 (3 years ago)
@The Arkham Rebeillion is it possible to get maps for QL symphonic Orchestra? Having a hard time finding them.. This video is great and saved me a LOT of time. Fantastic :D
The Arkham Rebellion (3 years ago)
+Caveman1 They were missing from his site for a while but looks like they are back again here: http://www.rivetedstudios.com/download/eastwestquantum-leap/
Barmey Ung (3 years ago)
really nice.  Thanks!
The Arkham Rebellion (3 years ago)
+Barmey Ung It might be, it's been quite a while since I last visited that site - and I only use about 10% of the instruments EWQL has to offer (and then only about 25% of the articulations) so I definitely can't say how many are accurate or not!  thanks for watching
Barmey Ung (3 years ago)
but all the articulations and expressions are mislabeled at the Riveted Studios website.  Maybe it's out of date.
Martin Harth (4 years ago)
Great thanks to you for this! You truely saved me weeks. Also my compliments to the guys who established the wonderful  EWQL expression maps. Wow, your tutorial is a MUST KNOW thing.
The Arkham Rebellion (4 years ago)
Thanks for watching - yes, the expression maps are a godsend, not sure I would have had the patience to make them myself!
GallifreyFNM (4 years ago)
Great tutorial, but in a 'cannot be unheard' kind of thing, the VO does sound a little bit like Jo Brand...

Hey! is it possible that I don't have Expression Map in my Cubase even if I have above Cubsae 5? I have the Artist Cubsae, maybe it's because of that? Is there any way in the properties to find out if this option is off or I simply don't have it? Thanks!
The Arkham Rebellion (4 years ago)
Hi - I think it's the fact you have the Artist version that's the problem. You can check what features your version has on the steinberg website. I do know that Artist is a stripped down version so that's probably it.

You're my hero. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these!

This is incredible: fun and simple to follow! You have re-ignited my interest in digital audio production so thank you very much :) As Richard Branson says: "Complexity is your enemy. Any fool can make something complicated. It is hard to make something simple."

Fantastic! Thank you for the detailed information. I'm on the verge of buying the Platinum plus as it's at an amazing 50% off till Jan 15. I had been hankering for the Hollywood pro offer but just can't afford it now watching your two videos - looking forward to the third even though I'm no metal player :) - I think this orchestra would fit the bill and the larger deal may have been overkill for my style and skill set. I also learned a bit about midi programming and the excellent link to the downloads. Thanks again.
The Arkham Rebellion (4 years ago)
Cool - it's amazing what deals EastWest come up with sometimes, I never pay full price for add ons as there's always a massive sale around the corner. You won't be disappointed with Platinum, with the right programming it's virtually impossible to tell that it's not real. I hear Hollywood strings beats the EWQLSO strings, but like you unless I win the lottery I'm not going to be buying up different versions of the same instruments any time soon!

Thx for the valuable info! I use Logic Pro. Wondering if it's going to work in full or there will be some limitation.

This is, by far, the most informative, useful, intelligent tutorial video (both 1 and 2) I have seen in a long time. Thanks for taking the time, and I hope you have fully recovered from your bike wreck. Looking forward to the next one

Thank you for the kind comment - part 3 is now available in my playlist, hopefully you'll find it as useful as the first 2!
The Arkham Rebellion (5 years ago)
That's in the pipeline, I'm recovering from a motorbike crash at the moment so have been a bit slow with uploads recently, should be out in a month or so

Ive got konpakt ewso gold but this was very helpful and when up and running i will come back and watch and try at the same time.Thumbs up deffo some realy handy tips.Have you made a part 3 yet?
The Arkham Rebellion (5 years ago)
I've never used EWQL live so can't really say if this is the best approach for that - my system handles it OK but not well enough for me to have that kind of confidence in it CPU /RAM wise. These techniques are what I use to try and make it sound as realistic as possible on a recording - obviously the more expression/midi data etc that's created will increase the risk of something overloading in a live environment if there are loads of other inserts/plugins running as well..
Flatted357 (5 years ago)
Is the purpose of this approach more for Live performance than recording?
kristofari (5 years ago)
Everything is sounding great, thankfully. We have a final mixing session in a couple of days and then we should be good to go. I'll be sure to get back to you when it's done.
The Arkham Rebellion (5 years ago)
holy crap, then you'd better get him a good mixdown or his talents will be wasted, there's only so much a good mastering engineer can do! And yes, please do send me a link when done, I'd love to hear it.
kristofari (5 years ago)
It's all good, mixing went very well thanks to your other two videos. I'll be sure to send you a link when it's all done. PS, we're having Jens Bogren master :)
The Arkham Rebellion (5 years ago)
bad timing dude, i came off my motorbike last night and have hurt my mouse arm quite badly. That video ain't happening today! but feel free to pm me with any specific questions and i'll be glad to help where i can
kristofari (5 years ago)
I know it's a stretch, but if you could post your third video in the next 24 hours before my mixing session with my half-assed engineer that would be great, lol. (I would paypal you some beer money and a ton of good karma).
